Alex Ovechkin caught in online controversy!

Chatter remains loud around Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin and his support of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s unjust war against Ukraine. Earlier this season, there were even reports that the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) had made an official appeal to the Canadian government to have Ovechkin banned from the country. In particular, the UCC asked the federal government in December to deny Ovechkin entry into Canada prior to the Capitals’ game against the Maple Leafs in Toronto.

Ovi remains focused on chasing Wayne Gretzky’s record, but on Tuesday, it was revealed that his page on MoneyPuck now redirects to an article titled: “What to do about a problem called Alex Ovechkin: A look at the NHLer’s close ties to [President RUS].” and a donation page for Ukraine.

Not sure if Ovechkin is aware of the controversial stance from MoneyPuck online, but he probably hasn’t help his case as he never criticized the Russian government for the invasion of Ukraine and for years he has kept a photo of himself with Putin as the profile picture on his Instagram account.  

Hockey fans and North Americans, in general, paid little attention to Ovechkin’s relationship with Putin until Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Knowing that he is a popular search, Money Puck went a step further to criticize the player and link him to a controversy. 

Now things like this Money Puck page redirect is catching attention and Ovechkin is caught once again in the controversy.
Last year, MoneyPuck made their feelings clear about Ovechkin and his support of Putin.

It was a matter of time before they went at it again, this time, trying to support people of Ukraine.

Mouse and keyboard support is coming to Xbox cloud games

I might finally start using Xbox Cloud Gaming (oft called xCloud) thanks to an upcoming, much-needed addition: mouse and keyboard support.

Currently, Microsoft’s game streaming service only supports gamepads and touch (on limited titles). While there’s nothing wrong with those options, I’ve found that restriction to be one of the main reasons I don’t use xCloud. The few times I’ve wanted to try xCloud games, I couldn’t because I didn’t have a controller handy. What did I have? Yup, a keyboard and a mouse.

Windows Central spotted the news in a developer Q&A video. A comment from Jorg Neumann, the head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, at 8:40 confirmed that xCloud keyboard and mouse support was on the way.

“The next step for us is mouse [and] keyboard,” Neumann said. “This is platform-level support, so it has nothing to do with us. Obviously, mouse and keyboard works for our sim. So the platform team is working on this. I know I can’t give a date because it’s the platform team. I don’t know their dates, but it’s coming.”

Neumann also said Flight Simulator would get touch control support in the future, and expressed interest in adding gyroscope support for mobile devices. Both would make Flight Simulator much more accessible on mobile devices, which can access the title now thanks to its recent arrival on xCloud.

Despite the lack of a timeline, it’s great to know that mouse and keyboard support is on the way. xCloud, to me, has always stood out as a great way to game on the go or for testing games before committing to a download. For the former, I often have a laptop with me when I’m away from home — mouse and keyboard support would make it much easier to use that for xCloud. For game testing, mouse and keyboard support would make it much easier to try PC titles like Age of Empires IV.

Chrome OS code change reveals initial list of Chromebooks getting Steam

Google is closer than ever to rolling out support for Steam on Chrome OS. Now, a newly uncovered list details which Chromebooks will initially support Steam.

Spotted by 9to5Google, the list was included in a recent code change submitted to the Chromium Gerrit, an online collaborative tool for reviewing code. The list mostly contains devices from Acer and Asus:

  • Volta – Acer Chromebook 514 (CB514-1H)
  • Volet – Acer Chromebook 515
  • Voxel – Acer Chromebook Spin 713 (CP713-3W)
  • Delbin – Asus Chromebook Flip CX5 (CX5500)
  • Drobit – Asus Chromebook CX9 (CX9400)
  • Lindar – an unknown/unreleased Chromebook from Lenovo

Moreover, 9to5 discovered that there will be other requirements for Steam. Chromebooks will also need, at minimum, an 11th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU, and at least 7GB of RAM.

It’s worth noting, however, that these are initial requirements and they could change. For example, 9to5 notes it’s seen evidence of Google testing Steam on Chromebooks with 10th Gen Intel CPUs and with AMD chips.

Another interesting tidbit of information is that Nvidia appears to be directly involved with developing Steam support for Chrome OS. The graphics card maker submitted several code changes, according to 9to5, and has also worked on making Chromebooks capable of using a discrete graphics card specifically for Steam.

Considering there aren’t any Chromebooks on the current list that have discrete GPUs, that suggests there will be more Chromebooks coming to the list in the future.

This all marks fairly strong ambition from Google to enable gaming on Chrome OS. We’ve tracked the company’s efforts for a while now, and it may not be much longer until Chrome OS is a potential alternative for PC gaming. That said, Steam support on Chrome OS seems at odds with Google’s struggling Stadia platform — maybe it’s another sign that Google’s moving away from Stadia.

Meta testing live chat support for Facebook creators locked out of their account

Meta’s Facebook platform is now testing a live chat help feature for users who have been locked out of their Facebook accounts.

Facebook detailed the change on its ‘Meta for Creators’ website, noting that it’s testing live chat help for “some English-speaking users globally, including creators.” This marks the first time Facebook has offered live support for this kind of issue, and for now, it will focus on people who can’t log in to their accounts due to unusual activity or because of alleged community standards violations.

The change marks a significant shift for Meta/Facebook. The service has lagged behind other popular creator platforms when it comes to community moderation and page management tools. Plus, large creator accounts are more likely to be targeted for account theft, making tools for recovering accounts more valuable.

A BuzzFeed News report from August detailed an underground economy of people who claim to have inside access at Meta. These insiders charge money to help restore accounts — creators who rely on social media for their business may find themselves with no choice but to pay when they get locked out.

Along with the live chat for account recovery, Meta announced other changes including improved comment moderation with keyword blocking, moderation assistance that can auto-hide comments with links or images, the ability to block users and any new accounts they make and a dedicated spot to view hidden comments.

There’s also a small test of live chat support for English-speaking creators in the U.S. who don’t have an assigned relationship manager. That can help mid-tier creators get quick responses to questions about things like payouts and new features.

Discord working on native M1 support for Mac app

Popular game-focused chat platform Discord is finally working on an update that will officially support Apple’s new M1 chips.

Some Reddit users (via 9to5Mac) spotted the change in Discord’s ‘Canary’ version. Discord Canary is available from the platform’s website and is a space for the developers to test new versions of the app before officially pushing out the updates to the stable app.

The latest Discord Canary version runs natively on M1 Macs.

As 9to5 points out, native M1 support brings benefits like improve energy efficiency and performance. However, Discord is an Electron app, which means it may not offer as noticeable gains as other native Mac apps.

Regardless, M1 support is a step in the right direction and should help make Discord a little better on Apple computers.

You can download Discord Canary from the Discord website, but you may want to wait for the stable version if you don’t want to deal with bugs and other instabilities. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet when Discord will push the official native M1 update to users.

Developers will need to update iPhone apps to take full advantage of 120Hz

It seems app developers will need to make some tweaks to take full advantage of the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max’s new 120Hz display.

According to iMore, Apple posted a developer article detailing that iPhone apps require a key added to a ‘.plist’ file to “unlock” 120Hz support.

The clarification came after some developers reported that scrolling in an app used 120Hz, but animations were capped at 60Hz. By adding the plist entry, apps can start taking advantage of the higher refresh rate.

Apple also noted that the iPad Pro doesn’t require this special configuration. While it isn’t entirely clear why, Engadget suggests it may be a limitation to help preserve iPhone battery life — the iPad wouldn’t need a similar limit since the larger battery would experience less of a hit from 120Hz.

Further, Apple also confirmed a fix was incoming for some apps ‘Core Animation’ animations. In short, the bug limited the speed for these apps, but a future iOS 15 update should remedy the issue.

Overall, if you’re one of the lucky ones out there with a brand-new iPhone 13 Pro and you notice some apps aren’t as smooth as others, it might be because developers haven’t updated the apps yet. As with all significant changes to iPhone displays, it may take time for developers to add support.

Frances Bean Cobain offers support to Zelda Williams

Frances Bean Cobain has offered her support to Robin Williams’ daughter.

The 21-year-old artist – who was just 20 months old when her father, Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain, committed suicide – told Zelda Williams she will be there for her ”wherever, whenever” after her actor dad took his own life on Monday (08.11.14).

Frances – whose mother is Hole rocker Courtney Love – tweeted: ”@zeldawilliams You have such an incredibly beautiful soul. I love you but you already knew that. Wherever, whenever u need me I’ll be there (sic)”.

Zelda, 25, has released a lengthy statement in tribute to her dad in which she admitted she will ”never, ever understand” his actions.

She said: ”While I’ll never, ever understand how he could be loved so deeply and not find it in his heart to stay, there’s minor comfort in knowing our grief and loss, in some small way, is shared with millions. It doesn’t help the pain, but at least it’s a burden countless others now know we carry, and so many have offered to help lighten the load. Thank you for that.”

Elsewhere in her statement she recalled the last time they spent the day together, thanked fans for their support and told Robin’s critics he would be laughing at them.

She also said: ”My family has always been private about our time spent together. It was our way of keeping one thing that was ours, with a man we shared with an entire world. But now that’s gone, and I feel stripped bare. My last day with him was his birthday, and I will be forever grateful that my brothers and I got to spend that time alone with him, sharing gifts and laughter. He was always warm, even in his darkest moments…

”To those he touched who are sending kind words, know that one of his favorite things in the world was to make you all laugh. As for those who are sending negativity, know that some small, giggling part of him is sending a flock of pigeons to your house to poop on your car. Right after you’ve had it washed. After all, he loved to laugh too…

”Dad was, is and always will be one of the kindest, most generous, gentlest souls I’ve ever known, and while there are few things I know for certain right now, one of them is that not just my world, but the entire world is forever a little darker, less colorful and less full of laughter in his absence. We’ll just have to work twice as hard to fill it back up again.”
