Telus offers mental health support for women through Telus Health MyCare app

Telus is expanding its Health for Good program to women needing mental health support.

The company will offer 1,000 free counselling sessions annually to women in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario. Registered mental health professionals conduct the sessions through Telus’ health app.

A March 2022 survey from Angus Reid Institute and CBC found 60 percent of women aged 18 to 34 in Canada found their mental health deteriorated through the pandemic. The figure increased to 63 percent when surveying women between 35 and 54.

Telus is partnering with three charities, Dress for Success Vancouver, Mamas for Mamas and YWCA Metro Vancouver, under the program.

“Helping more women through our Telus Health for Good program, this expansion is focused on removing barriers, making it easier and more affordable to access mental health services and making a meaningful difference in their lives,” Jill Schnarr, the company’s chief social innovation and communications officer, said.

The app is available for download through the App Store and Google Play.

Telus health launches new virtual pharmacy program

The health initiative of telecommunications company Telus is introducing new changes to better deliver pharmacy services.

Telus Health has launched a virtual pharmacy, allowing Canadians to set up reminders to have prescriptions refilled and shipped directly to their door.

Users will also be allowed to have unlimited video and phone consultations with licensed pharmacists and will be able to manage medications through an online dashboard.

The service is introduced during a time when medication non-adherence is on the rise. This is when patients don’t take their medications as directed. A survey conducted for Telus Health found a third of Canadians were unable to pick up their prescription on time last year. A majority of respondents said the task slipped their minds when asked to explain their reasoning.

“As people’s lives continue to get busier, we need to focus on providing simple and convenient solutions that allow people to better manage their health and the health of their families,” Sonya Lockyer, vice president of pharmacy at Telus Health, said in a statement. “Not following medication instructions can negatively affect a patient’s health and costs our health care systems billions of dollars in unnecessary acute care interventions.”

The service is available in English in all provinces besides Quebec. A French version will be released in the “coming months.”

The app is available on iOS and Android.

Telus’s 24/7 Apple Watch emergency alert service now available in French

Telus Health Companion service for Apple Watch, which provides support and emergency services to seniors living at home, is now offered in both of Canada’s official languages.

First launched in May 2021, the 24/7 service uses the Apple Watch’s fall detection API and location data to flag when wearers have fallen down.

A Telus Health operator then speaks to the wearer  — now in English or French — via the watch, and can remotely alert their emergency contacts or call 911 if help is needed.

Telus is currently charging $30 per month for the service, if you already have an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer.

Otherwise, you can pay $54 per month to buy the watch and service as a bundle through a 2-year payment plan.

In order to work, the service also needs to be linked up to an iPhone 6s or later with up-to-date iOS and a wireless Telus plan.
