Koodo website suggests switching to Telus to get 5G

Koodo’s website has a banner that appears when looking at 5G-capable phones that suggests customers switch to Telus if they want 5G.

It’s not clear how long this has been a thing, but I noticed it today while bouncing around carrier websites gathering pricing and pre-order info about the new iPhones. The banner says “All 5G-capable phones available from Koodo will run on our coast-to-coast 4G speed network. To access a 5G network, consider switching to Telus.”

Moreover, the banner includes two links. The first is to a page showing Koodo’s coverage, while the other links to a Telus page detailing all the benefits of 5G (and yes, benefits is doing a lot of heavy lifting there).

Koodo, of course, is a Telus flanker brand. At the moment, none of the Big Three flanker brands (such as Fido, Virgin Plus, Public Mobile, etc.) offer 5G connectivity — those who want the latest and greatest cellular network will need to go to Rogers, Bell, or Telus for now. However, the other flanker brands don’t have banners like this — at least, not yet.

Another interesting tidbit: Telus added data speed caps to its plans and to Koodo’s plans back in February. Depending on your Telus plan, your speeds will max out at either 250Mbps or 1Gbps (naturally, the more you pay, the higher your speed cap). Koodo caps speeds at 100Mbps. And yet, a couple of years ago when I had a Koodo plan, I regularly hit speeds over 300Mbps on its 4G LTE network. Curious how now that pricey 5G plans are available, 4G speeds are suddenly limited.

Moreover, 5G speeds are, well, not great in Canada. To be fair, I haven’t been able to test the new 3,500MHz spectrum yet since I don’t live in an area where it’s available, nor have I tested Telus 5G since 2019, but I’ve had Bell 5G for years and have been lucky to get anything faster than 100Mbps on it.

Several members of the MobileSyrup team have experienced pressure from Telus to make the leap from Koodo. Most recently, MobileSyrup editor-in-chief Patrick O’Rourke received a letter from Telus urging him to switch from Koodo to Telus for a plan that cost the same but had less data.

Anyway, will 5G be worth it for Canadians someday? Hopefully. But we’re still early days, and I remain skeptical of any push to get a 5G plan, especially if it comes from a banner on a wireless provider’s website.

Tallcree Tribal Government to give residents wireless connectivity for the first time

Residents of Tallcree First Nation, located in Northern Alberta, will soon have wireless access for the first time.

The Tallcree Tribal Government is partnering with Telus and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to make the project happen.

The proposal will connect 300 households once completed by late 2024 and will benefit two communities along the Highway 88 corridor near Fort Vermilion, Alberta. The communities are home to roughly 500 people.

In a press release, Telus notes the connectivity will allow small businesses to compete globally, enable families to connect with loved ones and provide a lifeline in an emergency.

“This project opens up greater opportunity for our members in these communities. It brings the world to our doorstep and allows our communities to broaden their networks,” Chief Rupert Meneen of Tallcree Tribal Government said.

“This project will provide the opportunities to our people that other communities have closer to larger centres and the Chief and Council encourage our communities to take full advantage of the services.”

Telus completes LifeWorks acquisition

Vancouver-based telecom giant Telus says it has completed its $2.3 billion acquisition of LifeWorks.

LifeWorks is marketed as a company that supports the “total wellbeing of individuals” — covering mental, physical, financial and social health. The successful acquisition expands Telus Health’s footprint to 50 million people in 160 countries.

“As one of the largest health technology companies globally, our newly expanded Telus Health organization will provide employers across the globe with world-leading digital health and wellness solutions for their employees that are convenient, innovative and highly effective,” Darren Entwistle, Telus’ CEO said.

Telus picks MATRIXX Software to warrant next-gen 5G services

Telus has selected MATRIXX Software as its solution for 5G monetization.

The Vancouver-based telecom giant will use the MATRIXX Digital Commerce Platform to develop new solutions for mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), fixed and cloud services.

“Partnering with MATRIXX will provide us with one of the best monetization solutions for our next-generation network and services,” Hesham Fahmy, Telus’ chief information officer, said.

“It’s one of the best technology solutions for meeting our evolving needs as we strive for new and better ways to connect customers across our rapidly expanding 5G network and offer whatever businesses and customers want next.”

CRTC to issue Telus credit card fee decision in 45 business days

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) published a response to Telus’ request to add a credit card processing fee, saying it will make a decision within 45 business days.

Moreover, the CRTC said it will not approve the request “on an interim basis on the 15th calendar day following receipt” due to the “many interventions opposing this application.”

On August 9th, MobileSyrup reported on Telus’ request to the CRTC to add a credit card processing fee to customers’ bills. The fee would apply to customers who pay via credit card, and would be set at 1.5 percent of the payment amount plus applicable taxes.

In its request, Telus cited a lawsuit against credit card companies like Visa and Mastercard — the lawsuit will enable businesses to pass along credit card fees to customers starting in October. As a brief refresher, credit card companies previously charged businesses what are called interchange fees on purchases made using credit cards and had rules preventing businesses that accepted credit cards from passing the fees onto customers. Interchange fees range between one and three percent and often fund credit card rewards like cashback or loyalty points.

A settlement reached by the lawsuit would allow businesses to get a rebate on these fees as well as strike down the rules preventing businesses from passing on the fees to customers. While it remains unclear how many businesses will go through with passing fees to customers, Telus’ request to the CRTC to add a credit card processing fee upset Canadians, sparking a significant response from the public on the application.

The CRTC’s interventions page for the Telus request, which includes public comments and other responses, lists over 2,601 entries at the time of writing. Many of those entries include complaints about the high costs of wireless and internet bills in Canada, while others take aim at the federal government and CRTC for failing to protect Canadians from telecom companies.

Did you change service providers after last month’s Rogers outage?

It’s been slightly over a month since the major Rogers service outage. July 8th’s outage was one of the worst in recent memory, affecting internet and wireless services across the country.

The service outage impacted Interac, emergency services, third-party internet service providers like TekSavvy, the CRTC’s phone lines, Canadian Blood Services, Service Canada, ArriveCan and more.

With all of this in mind, we’d like to know: did you change your service provider, or are you sticking with Rogers? Rogers and the CRTC claim they will implement safeguards to prevent a widespread outage like this from happening again, but is that enough?
