Telus to invest $19 million in Prince George and $8 million in Whistler and Squamish

Telus announced that it is investing a total of $33 million in different communities in Alberta and British Columbia in its continued effort to expand PureFibre and 5G networks.

In British Columbia, investments include $19 million in Prince George and $8 million in Whistler and Squamish as part of a wider $17.5 billion investment in infrastructure, operations, and spectrum across British Columbia through 2026.

“This generational $17.5 billion investment in British Columbia is a true demonstration of Telus’ long-standing commitment to improving the lives of Canadians by connecting communities from coast to coast with our world-leading wireless 5G and PureFibre networks,” said Darren Entwistle, president and CEO of Telus. “Through our investment, we are supporting the social and economic vibrancy of British Columbia and ensuring that every member of our society has access to the technology that yields the opportunity to realize their full potential.”

Other than expanding its PureFibre and 5G networks, the investment also aims to support the generation of new jobs to support B.C.’s growing economy, with over 5,500 British Columbians to be hired for construction, engineering, and emerging technology jobs at Telus.

In Alberta, Telus is investing $6 million in Stony Plain this year as part of its $17 billion wider investment to bring network infrastructure and spectrum across the province.

Telus to invest $13 million in Fort McMurray and St. Albert, Alberta in 2022

Telus’ $17 billion investment in Alberta will include millions for Fort McMurray and St. Albert.

Fort McMurray will see $3 million in investments this year, while St. Albert will receive $10 million worth of investments.

The $17 billion will be spent through 2026. It will connect thousands of homes in the province to Telus’ pure fibre-to-the-home network and create 8,500 new jobs.

“This generational $17 billion investment in Alberta is a true demonstration of Telus’ long-standing commitment to improving the lives of Canadians by connecting communities from coast-to-coast with our world-leading wireless 5G and PureFibre networks,” Darren Entwistle, Telus’ CEO, said.

The $17 billion investment includes $10 million for Leduc and $220 million for Edmonton.

Telus to add a credit card processing fee starting in October, pending CRTC approval

Vancouver-based national telecom Telus has filed a request with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to add a credit card processing fee to customers’ bills later this year.

According to a document filed with the CRTC on August 8th, 2022, Telus wants the fee to apply to new and existing customers who make credit card payments for Telus services. The fee would be set at 1.5 percent of the payment amount plus applicable taxes.

In an example based on an Alberta customer, Telus says a $100 bill with $5 in GST would include a $1.58 processing fee and $0.08 in additional GST on said fee, for a total final bill of $106.66.

Telus sites a 2018 class action lawsuit that resulted in Visa and Mastercard agreeing to modify their no-surcharge rules. Both companies previously included clauses in agreements with merchants that prevented them from adding surcharges to cover the cost of transaction fees, which The Globe and Mail explains are used to fund loyalty programs and reward points.

The rule change will come into effect starting October 6th — Telus requested that its new credit card processing fee come into effect on October 17th, 2022. Moreover, Telus says it plans to provide “advanced notice” to customers starting in mid-August.

Those who pay their cellphone bill with a credit card may want to consider switching to an alternate payment method if they want to avoid paying additional fees, assuming the CRTC approves the request.

Welcome to MobileSyrup’s telecom roundup, a recap of all the important telecom news over the past week.

From quarterly reports to government announcements, this was a busy week in Canadian telecom.

Business news

Over the past week, we saw a barrage of quarterly reports from the leading telecom companies in Canada.

Telus reported it added 247,000 mobile and fixed customers in its second quarter of the year. 93,000 of the new customer came from mobile phone connections as the company saw its subscriber base increase by 4.2 percent year over year.

BCE reported growth in its wireless services as well, adding more than 110,000 mobile phone net subscribers. This figure increased 140 percent year over year. The company’s president and CEO also touched on the Rogers outage, saying Bell uses separate wireless and wireline networks, a move Rogers only recently announced. 

Unlike its counterparts, Québecor’s revenue was in the negative. The company reported $1.12 billion in revenue in Q2 2022, down $16 million (1.4 percent) from Q2 2021. Revenue for its telecommunication services decreased 1.7 percent.

Infrastructure

Bell announced earlier this week that it would roll out 8Gbps symmetrical internet speeds in September. The update will first be available to select Toronto residents. Information on 8Gbps plans by other providers is available here.

More on Bell-related news, Northwestel has launched high-speed fibre internet in two fly-in communities in the Northwest Territories. Customers in Fort Good Hope and Tulita will see speeds up to 300Mbps.

Policy/Government

OpenMedia and Leadnow are calling on the government to end Canada’s telecom monopoly. The two non-profit advocacy agencies have obtained 28,000 signatures through a petition.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced it would allocate $20.5 million towards 10 wireless and internet projects through the Broadband Fund. The investment will support 35 communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, and Quebec.

The Government of Ontario announced it would work to bring high-speed internet to 266,000 homes and businesses. The Province has signed eight agreements with service providers, including Bell, Cogeco, Xplornet, and Rogers.

Telus added 247,000 mobile customers in its second quarter, financial results reveal

In the past year, Telus has increased its operating revenue by seven percent, the company’s second-quarter financial results reveal.

The figure was partially driven by increased revenue in Telus’ technology solutions (TTech) category, which includes revenue from mobile networks, internet and data services.

Telus added 247,000 mobile customers in the past quarter.

CRTC’s Broadband Fund to pay $20.5 million for 10 wireless and internet projects

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has allocated millions of dollars to 10 projects that will improve wireless and internet services in Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, and Quebec.

The projects will see fourth-generation mobile wireless access (known as LTE or LTE-A) rollout across 425 kilometres of roads and highways. The funds will also support improved internet and mobile wireless access to 2,250 households in 35 communities.

The CRTC allocated $20.5 million through the Broadband Fund, a pool of money that supports mobile wireless and internet access projects in underserved areas.

Bell received funding for four projects that will benefit Manitoba and Quebec.

Sichuun Inc., with Naskapi Imuun Inc. and Redline Communications Inc., received funding for one project to benefit Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Sogetel Mobilité inc. received funding for one project benefiting Quebec. Telus received funding for four projects, also for Quebec.

Construction for most of the 10 projects will start later this year or early 2023.

The CRTC first started accepting applications for the fund in 2019. With this announcement, the CRTC has committed $226.5 million to upgrade services in 205 communities.

The 10 projects reported here are the results of the CRTC’s second round of applications.

“Since the first funding announcement from the Broadband Fund in 2020, more communities, households, and roads have access to better and faster internet and voice services. These services are an important part of Canada’s public safety infrastructure,” Ian Scott, CRTC’s chairperson and CEO, said.

The Big Three race to offer the fastest home internet in Canada

Picking a provider for at-home fibre internet services can be a difficult task. Cost, location, and available speeds are some of the factors that play a role. It also isn’t helpful when Canada’s largest telecom companies come out with one announcement or another claiming to rule the game.

The latest stream of announcements involves delivering upload and download speeds of 8 Gigabits per second (Gbps).

Back in April, Rogers announced that it completed fibre broadband tests to deliver up to 8Gbps of symmetrical speeds. Earlier this week, Bell followed suit with a similar announcement.

To help you stay up to date with the information, MobileSyrup has put together a guide to give you a roundup of everything you need to know about the deployment of 8Gbps speeds.

Rogers

The Toronto-based telecom giant said 8Gbps symmetrical speeds would be available through Ignite Internet this summer for customers in parts of Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland. But with only mere weeks left in the hottest season of the year, Rogers has yet to provide any further details on the matter.

“Rogers has not yet released further updates to our plan for 8Gbps. In our previous release, we had indicated availability in the Summer of 2022 and that’s what we are working towards. More information on the plan will be shared closer to its release time,” a spokesperson told MobileSyrup.

Rogers’ fastest speeds currently under Ignite Internet are symmetrical speeds of 2.5Gbps in parts of Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland. More information is available on Rogers’ website. 

Bell

Bell recently announced it would introduce 8Gbps symmetrical speeds in September in parts of Toronto, where download speeds will be five times faster and upload speeds 250 times faster than cable technology.

“New 8Gbps speeds will be available starting in September in select areas of Toronto, and later rolling out in other parts of the country. We’ll share more information about specific locations closer to the time of availability,” a Bell spokesperson told MobileSyrup.

Bell currently offers 3Gbps download and upload speeds under Fibe Internet. Anyone interested in the service can visit their website to check if the offer is available to them.

Telus

At this time, Telus hasn’t made plans to launch 8Gbps symmetrical speeds (if it has any) public. But past instances have told us it’s likely the company isn’t too far behind from launching something similar.

For example, all three companies were quick to announce the rollout of the 3500MHz spectrum to their respective customers, making announcements in close succession.

At this time, Telus” fastest internet speeds include download speeds up to 1.5Gbps and upload speeds of 940 megabits per second (Mbps), according to their website. To note, 1 Gbps equals 1,000 Mbps.

Telus did not respond to requests for comment ahead of publication.

Telus mailed me a free SIM, $70/25GB plan to switch from Koodo

Usually, my physical mailbox is full of useless junk mail (no, I’m not interested in selling my house), but on Monday, I was surprised to receive a rather interesting offer from Telus.

The deal, entitled ‘Need an upgrade,’ seems to aim to encourage Koodo customers to make the jump to Telus. For those who are unaware, Koodo is Telus’ flanker brand.

“Patrick, since Telus and Koodo are part of the same family, we wanted to let you know about a special Telus deal,” reads the offer.

The Unlimted 25 5G plan costs $70 per month and includes 5G speeds. The ad stands out because it comes in at $15/mo less than the carrier’s in-market version of the plan, and it includes a physical Telus SIM card. It’s surprising to see a carrier still send out a free SIM, especially in the modern era of digital eSIMs.

It’s important to note that Telus lists data speeds with this plan at up to 250Mbps with unlimited data at a “reduced speed” of 512Kbps once the 25GB has been hit. However, there are no overages with this plan. Those interested in switching can bring their own device or purchase a new smartphone through Telus.

Since I’m with Koodo and currently have a plan that gives me 30GB of LTE data (usually at speeds of 20Mbps-70Mbps) for $70/month, the jump to 5G alongside the loss of 10GB of data isn’t worth it for me. Maybe if the deal was tied to the carrier’s Unlimited 50 5G+ plan that offers 50GB of data at 1Gbps, it would be a much better option.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time a Canadian carrier has given away a free SIM card. For example, Bell sent a ‘win-back’ offer that included 20GB of data for $55/mo to some former customers last year.
