Telus offering customers with U.S. roaming free 24/7 healthcare hotline

Telus is offering customers travelling to the U.S. free access to its travel health care program.

The Telus Health MyCare Travel service is available to Telus and Koodo customers with a U.S. roaming package or a Canada-U.S. plan.

It connects users travelling across the country to a team of registered nurses in the U.S. by phone 24/7. Customers can access triage services, information to help them get through the healthcare system in the U.S., and medical advice for concerns and symptoms that aren’t urgent.

Telus’ U.S. roaming costs $12 a day. Users can access data from their plans and have unlimited talk and text. Additionally, customers can opt for pay-for-use and pay $5 per MB of data, $1.60 per minute of talk and $0.75 per text.

Those able to access the service will have to download the Telus Health MyCare app.

More information is available on Telus’ website.

Telus investing $10 million in Leduc, Alberta

Vancouver-based telecom giant Telus says it will invest $10 million in the City of Leduc this year.

The announcement falls under an earlier investment the company made. In May, Telus announced it was allocating $17 billion in Alberta over the next four years. The investment will go towards operations, network infrastructure and spectrum and create 8,500 new jobs in the province.

“This generational $17 billion investment in Alberta is a true demonstration of Telus’ long-standing commitment to improving the lives of Canadians by connecting communities from coast to coast with our world-leading wireless 5G and PureFibre networks,” Darren Entwistle, the company’s president and CEO, said.

Telus has made a similar allocation for Edmonton, announcing earlier this month the city will see $220 million in investments.

The City of Leduc also benefited from an announcement Telus made in March, detailing it was bringing internet speeds up to 100Mbps to rural communities for the first time. With speeds four times faster than what’s available through 4G, Telus said the move allowed Leduc residents to stream their favourite shows, make video calls, and surf the web at the same time.

Koodo emailing customers about $5/mo bill increase starting in August

Telus flanker brand Koodo emailed some customers to warn them of an incoming price increase. According to the email, Koodo will increase the monthly service charge for some customers by $5/mo starting on the August bill.

“As we mentioned on your July bill, the monthly service charge for the above lines on your account will increase by $5/month. You’ll start to see this monthly increase on your August bill,” the email reads.

It’s not clear how many Koodo customers will see the price increase next month. MobileSyrup has reached out to Koodo for clarification about how many customers will be impacted and why the provider is increasing prices.

However, the Koodo customer that shared the email with MobileSyrup is on an older promotional plan Koodo offered a few years ago with 50GB of data. It’s possible the price increases are going out exclusively to customers with promotional plans like this. (Anecdotally, something similar happened to me after switching to a Bell win-back offer — almost a year later, they upped the price of the plan by $3/mo).

As usual, telcos give and take. Koodo recently rolled out new $60/15GB and $65/20GB plans, which are a little better than what the carrier had before. Before that, the provider sent emails to some customers offering them 5GB of free bonus monthly data.

In May, Koodo upped the cost of its tab plans by $4/mo, and in April, it increased the cost of U.S. and international roaming packages.

Telus’ Ultimate Gamer bundle includes Nvidia GeForce Now priority membership

Telus’ new PureFibre Ultimate Gamer allows British Columbia and Alberta residents to play their favourite games on any device in their home.

The package gives users access to Telus’ Wi-Fi 6 and personalized Wi-Fi plus service, which includes installation, full Wi-Fi coverage at home, network security, and a support team.

The company currently offers customers Nvidia’s GeForce Now Priority for two years, granting them access to 1,300 PC games, including Fortnite, Apex Legends, Dying Light 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and Rocket League.

Those playing with a GeForce Now membership get priority access to servers, extended gaming sessions, and RTX On for titles that support it.

“Pairing GeForce Now with Telus’ world-leading communications technology will deliver a high-quality streaming experience to millions of Canadian customers,” Phil Eisler, vice president of GeForce Now at Nvidia, said.

Those interested can sign up on Telus’ website and access the bundle for $120 a month for the first two years.

Telus, Koodo launch Stream+ bundle with Netflix, Apple TV+, and Discovery+

Telus and its flanker brand Koodo launched a new ‘Stream+’ subscription that allows customers to add a $25/mo bundle with Netflix, Apple TV+, and Discovery+ to their plan.

Telus’ Stream+ service differs slightly from Koodo’s version, as it also includes Telus TV+ and the Vancouver-based national carrier offers a $5/mo discount to customers who get Stream+ when activating or renewing one of its 5G+ or Canada/U.S. Unlimited plans.

Regardless, the main benefit of the bundle is the three included streaming services. Telus breaks down the pricing, noting customers get “Netflix Premium,” which costs $20.99/mo without the bundle, Apple TV+, which costs $5.99/mo without the bundle, and Discovery+, which costs $4.99/mo without the bundle. While the bundle costs $25/mo, all the services on their own would cost $31.97/mo.

Telus Stream+ price breakdown.

Since Netflix offers several subscription tiers, it’s worth noting that Netflix’s website notes what’s included in the $20.99/mo ‘Premium’ tier:

  • Watch on up to four screens at the same time
  • Have downloads on up to four phones or tablets
  • Up to Ultra HD (UHD) quality

Moreover, Telus says that customers who sign up for Stream+ can keep their existing accounts for these services, so if you already have Netflix (for example), you can port your account to Stream+ instead of making a new one. That means you’ll keep your watch history and take advantage of savings.

However, if you’re buying an Apple device, the Stream+ bundle may not be the best deal, at least at first. Apple offers a three-month free trial of Apple TV+ to customers who buy a new Apple device, so you may want to make use of that before getting Stream+.

Finally, it’s worth noting that Stream+ is likely an effort to compete with Rogers and Bell, both of which bundle streaming services with their mobile plans. Rogers offers six months free Disney+ on select wireless plans, while Bell offers 24 months free of its own Crave streaming service (although it’s only the ‘Mobile‘ tier).

You can learn more about Stream+ with Telus here (or here with Koodo).

The not-so-easy ways to diversify personal telecom services following the Rogers outage

The July 8th Rogers outage left many Canadians scrambling to access several services. From making calls through mobile phones or landlines, attempting to work remotely, or even using their debit cards, many Canadians and companies using Rogers services were forced offline in a rude awakening.

The outage left many Rogers (and non-Rogers customers) questioning what they could do to avoid a similar situation in the future. MobileSyrup has put together a list of helpful tips below.

But be warned, taking these actions could result in tedious work that may end up costing you more, highlighting the lack of competition and regulation in Canada’s telecommunications market.

Mix and match your services

Mixing service providers up is one of the ways to ensure some services remain active when one company has an outage.

But there are important things to keep in mind here. One is knowing which service providers function independently and don’t rely on larger companies.

“If you’re looking to mix up the services so that you’re protected against all of them going down at once, you should be clear that you’re not actually signing up for companies that are provided by the same owner. They rely on the same network,” Ben Klass, a PhD candidate at Carleton University, said.

For example, companies like TekSavvy and Zoomer Wireless use Rogers services, and customers connected with these companies faced an outage on July 8th. You can check out a list of credits resellers are offering for the outage here.

Beware of flanker brands

A subsection to the last point, make sure you’re not diversifying your services with flanker brands, which are lower-priced brands that larger companies offer that run on the same network.

“Try to ensure that you’re not buying the same services from the same company,” Fenwick Mckelvey, an associate professor of communications at Concordia University, said.

For example, Rogers has Chatr and Fido as flanker brands, Bell has Virgin Plus and Lucky Mobile, and Telus has Koodo and Public Mobile. Purchasing internet from Bell and a phone plan from Virgin Plus doesn’t diversify your services.

Additionally, following the chaos of the July 8th outage, Rogers reportedly plans to split its network, separating wireless and wireline traffic. That should hopefully prevent both from going down at the same time in the future. That could mean it’ll be safe to use Rogers for both your smartphone and home internet in the future, but it’ll be a few years before the separation takes place.

Stay away from incentives

Incentives are great because they often include discounts or specific perks for bundling multiple services with one provider, a positive for Canadians who pay some of the highest telecom bills in the world. But that can cause trouble when a system-wide outage comes into play, as all of the services a provider offers you will be down.

“In Canada, all major companies emphasize bundles in their marketing. They even use techniques like selling a third, less useful service to create the perception of a discount,” Mckelvey explained. “If all these services are run by the same company and converged on the same network, then the customer is more and more dependent on one company.”

Buying your phone or getting one unlocked

To add to the theme of spending more money, another tip is to own your device outright so you can get a new SIM and access service from another provider if one is down. This may be costly for those who buy devices from companies on contracts. But according to Klass, owning your device or having one that’s unlocked will make it easier to access services from another provider.

“You could buy another SIM card and just pop it into your existing device. You might not have the same phone number,” he said, “but having an unlocked phone can make it easier to get those services.” Klass mentions people can only do this if they have the financial means to sign up for a new service and access a SIM card on the spot.

All phones sold in Canada must be unlocked, according to the Wireless Code that was implemented in 2017. That doesn’t mean carriers haven’t found ways to go around this. Rogers, for example, only unlocks phones for active customers or customers who were with the company in the past year and don’t have any outstanding fees.

Customers who bought older phones from the company before the Wireless Code went into effect, and didn’t unlock their phones or have been a customer for the past year, will have to become a Rogers customer to get their device unlocked.

And yes, keeping all of these details in mind is difficult.

“It’s not reasonable to expect your customers to know [these details],” Klass said. “You shouldn’t have to have a degree in engineering to figure out how the internet gets to your house or check your email.”

Telus says it will invest $220 million in Edmonton in 2022

Vancouver-based national telecom Telus announced plans to invest $220 million in Edmonton in 2022.

The investment comes as part of a larger $17 billion investment in Alberta through 2026. That investment will go towards ” operations, network infrastructure, and spectrum” and Telus says it will create 8,500 jobs in Alberta.

Telus also says its investment goes beyond operations and infrastructure in Edmonton. In a press release, the company said that it and its team members have provided over $48 million in cash and program contributions as well as volunteered over 1.4 million hours of service in support of charities and community organizations in the city.

Further, Telus reiterated some of its Alberta investment goals in the press release. That includes creating new jobs by hiring 8,500 Albertans with a focus on construction, engineering, and emerging technologies through 2026, and connecting nearly 1 million homes to its ‘PureFibre’ network.

The company also cited plans to connect rural and remote Alberta communities using 5G as it continues rolling out 3,500MHz spectrum. Finally, Telus said it will introduce its 5G standalone network this year and bring multi-access edge computing (MEC) capabilities to advance IoT and industry solutions.

Koodo reminds subscribers it uses Telus’ ‘reliable’ and ‘award-winning’ network

It seems that in the aftermath of Rogers’ lengthy service outage, Telus wants to remind Koodo customers that subscribers are part of the carriers’ “reliable and award-winning network.”

The email blast goes on to say that “Koodo runs on Canada’s largest 4G LTE network, so you can be confident you’ll have a strong connection wherever you are,” before reminding subscribers that “Since 2000, Telus has invested over $220 billion nationally in network infrastructure, operations and spectrum to keep you connected.”As the carrier often does, it also cites positive results from a recent Ookla Speedtest.

Telus ad about Koodo

It’s worth noting, however, that Rogers’ July 8th outage was caused by a faulty maintenance update — something that could happen to anyone. Moreover, the type of network Rogers’ operates contributed to the severity of the outage. MobileSyrup understands that Telus and Bell operate similar networks, meaning both are potentially vulnerable to similar outages.

The CRTC has given Rogers until July 22nd to offer a “detailed account” of what happened with the outage.

Further, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) Minister François-Philippe Champagne recently said policymakers will include Rogers’ July 8th service outage when considering the company’s proposed takeover of Shaw Communications.

Amid the Rogers outage, both Telus and Bell tweeted that their services are still up and running.

Telus and Shaw hold onto top spots for mobile and broadband speeds: Ookla

Telus and Shaw continue to dominate the mobile and fixed broadband fields in Canada, Ookla’s second quarter report reveals.

Telus is the fastest mobile operation, with a median download speed of 79.09Mbps, holding onto the title on Ookla’s Speedtest since Q3 2020.

Despite claiming the top spot, it’s important to note the company’s media speeds decreased over the past three months, a trend also seen in its big three partners Bell and Rogers.

Telus didn’t have similar success with 5G performance. The recent results show that Canada didn’t produce a “statistical winner,” but Bell and Telus led the way with speeds of 139.75Mbps and 137.17Mbps, respectively. Telus held the top spot in the last quarterly report the company produced.

Rogers 5G performance also decreased, going from speeds of 102.81Mbps in Q1 to speeds of 93.06 Mbps in Q2.

Rogers does report to have the fastest upload speeds with 9.21Mbps, as well as the lowest latency score among the big three. Bell and Telus score the same in latency with 26.

Fixed broadband

Shaw is the fastest fixed broadband provider, with a median download speed of 209.44Mbps. Shaw has held this title since Ookla’s Q1 2021 report.

Rogers takes second, with speeds of 197.94Mbps, and Bell is third with speeds of 137.98Mbps.

Shaw drops down to third place when looking at upload speeds. Ookla reports Shaw’s speeds at 57.96Mbps. Bell has the fastest upload speeds in this section with 106.81Mbps. Telus is second with 93.30Mbps.

Device information

Ookla also examined some of the fastest mobile devices available in Canada and found there was no statistical winner for the quarter. The same results are reported for manufacturer information. The analysis shows Samsung and Apple devices report similar download, upload, and latency scores.
