Telus invests millions to upgrade networks in Haida Gwaii, B.C.

Vancouver-based telecom giant Telus says it has invested $10 million to upgrade cell and broadband internet services for communities in Haida Gwaii, B.C.

Made up of a group of islands, Haida Gwaii is located off the province’s west coast.

The company says it completed upgrades in June to give residents and businesses in the communities of Daajing Giids and Skidegate internet speeds up to 120Mbps. Telus also updated local infrastructure, granting locals and visitors access to high-speed wireless voice and internet services for the first time.

The company says the updates “build upon” their reconciliation commitment. 

“We continue to engage with communities and Indigenous leaders in ways that they want to engage with us, and believe it is our responsibility as a socially purpose driven organization to use our voice, business and relationships to encourage reconciliation across Canada,” Tony Geheran, Telus’ executive vice-president and chief operations officer, said.

PCMag names Telus as fastest national internet service provider

PCMag has named Telus as the fastest nationwide internet provider in Canada.

This is the third time the Vancouver-based telecom company received the honour. PCMag notes the win is based on the company’s PureFibre program, which offers finer-to-the-home.

Telus has a PCMag Speed Index score (PSI) of 281.1. This score is generated through download and upload speeds.

But Telus drops to third place when examining all internet-service providers in Canada. The company is replaced with telMAX, a six-year-old business providing coverage to small regions of Ontario, including Durham and York. The company has a PSI score of 603.3 and runs on “almost entirely new infrastructure for its fiber network,” PCMag notes.

Government releases rules for the 3800MHz spectrum auction

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development has laid down the rules for the 3800MHz spectrum auction set to take place next year.

According to a press release announcing the requirements, the rules include measures that will lead to competition and deploy services faster.

The government will impose large carriers providing services nationally to a 100MHz cap on the combined 3500MHz and 3800MHz spectrum they can obtain. They’ll also reserve 150MHz across the two spectrum bands for smaller carriers. The government will also subject service providers to deploy the spectrum in a timely fashion, or they might risk losing it.

“Today’s announcement of the new rules for the 3800MHz spectrum auction is an important step in our ongoing efforts to ensure Canadians have access to affordable and high-quality services from coast to coast to coast,” Minister François-Philippe Champagne said.

The government announced in 2021 that it would repurpose the spectrum to support 5G devices, following the auction of the 3500MHz spectrum last summer.

Rogers, Bell, Telus, and Vidéotron spent a collective $7 billion at the last auction. The Big Three rolled out access to the 3500MHz spectrum earlier this month.

Freedom Mobile doubled market share between 2015 and 2020: study

Freedom Mobile is the fastest-growing carrier in the country.

A new study by comparison platform HelloSafe found Freedom Mobile, formerly called Wind Mobile, held nearly six percent of carrier market share in 2020, an increase from the 3.2 percent recorded in 2015. The study shows Freedom Mobile was only one of two carriers examined to increase this figure.

While the Big Three continued to dominate in Canada, their market share decreased from 90.4 percent in 2015 to 87.8 percent in 2020. Rogers decreased its market share by 0.5 percent, Bell by 0.3 percent, and Telus by 1.8 percent, respectively.

The number of cellphone subscribers in Canada grew by 3.6 million between 2015 and 2020. Rogers gained 1.1 million subscribers in the last five years, and Freedom Mobile followed closely behind with more than 982,000.

As the study notes, the Big Three continued to dominate the market, but smaller players, specifically Vidéotron, SaskTel and Freedom Mobile, made steady ground.

The collective market share of these “smaller” players reached 12.2 percent in 2020, an increase from the 9.6 percent recorded in 2015.

But not all small players are alike.

Freedom Mobile’s subscribers grew by nearly 105 percent between 2015 and 2020. Vidéotron also saw similar success, with its subscriber base (and market share) growing by almost 93 percent in the same period. But SaskTel, the dominant provider in Saskatchewan, decreased its subscriber base by 618,000 in that period.

Freedom Mobile’s future

“Freedom Mobile is now a strong 4th player in the Canadian phone service market,” the study states.

But the success of this “fourth player” could change down the road — Vidéotron’s parent company Québecor is currently acquiring Freedom Mobile. 

Rogers is selling the asset, owned by Shaw, to create a strong fourth carrier and appease competition concerns surrounding its takeover of Shaw. Pending regulatory approval, the sale is yet to be approved as critics question how the acquisition would lower cellphone bills.

Wind’s former founder, Anthony Lacavera, also appealed to regulatory bodies to reject the deal. His investment firm, Globalive Capital, offered $900 million more than Québecor to acquire Freedom Mobile.

Rogers’ takeover of Shaw is also in trouble after the Commissioner of Competition blocked the merger in May, stating it would lead Canadians to pay more for wireless services. Rogers, Shaw, and the commissioner will take part in a confidential mediation process on July 4th and 5th.

CRTC says action on botnet traffic a must to protect Canadians

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) says regulatory action is needed to ensure telecom providers that block botnets do it in a way that protects Canadians.

Cyber attackers use botnets to emit activities, including spam and information theft, that goes against Canada’s anti-spam legislation (CASL). Botnets impact everyone, from small businesses to hospitals.

The CRTC says communications from botnets flow through the networks telecom companies provide, putting them in a position to implement blocks of botnet activities.

In its decision, the regulatory body said it needs to take action as the current practices of service providers are “opaque” and aren’t consistent when sharing botnet indicators of compromise (IOCs). The CRTC further stated service providers are in a “unique position” to address activity, and blocking the issue at the network level is appropriate.

The CRTC’s Interconnection Steering Committee will examine the issue and create a report with its recommendations in the next nine months. A commenting period will follow, and the CRTC says it will “establish the minimum standards for botnet blocking” afterwards.

Several parties, including telecom companies, financial institutions, and advocacy groups, submitted comments last year when the CRTC launched its initial consultation. Bell, Eastlink, Telus and Rogers were part of the telecom companies who said intervention from the regulatory body was unnecessary.

The Big Three ultimately rejected the idea of mandatory blocking.

“The parties opposed to regulatory intervention argued that the existing flexibility afforded through collaboration is more adaptable than regulation, that a regulatory authority to block botnets already exists, that the current blocking efforts already follow industry best practices, and that other parties can contribute to botnet mitigation strategies more than [service providers] can,” the CRTC said in its decision.

Everything you need to know about accessing the new 3500MHz spectrum

The previous week saw a frenzy of activity from Canada’s leading telecom providers, as one after the other released details on giving customers access to the 3500MHz spectrum.

The spectrum assists the 5G network in providing improved network capacity, including faster speeds and download times. Rogers was the first to release details, followed by Bell and Telus. If you’re confused about how you can access the spectrum, we’ve outlined the specifics for comparison below.

Rogers

The 3500MHz spectrum is available on all Infinite Plans the company offers. This includes 25GB for $85/month, 45GB for $95/month, 50GB for $105/month, and 100GB for $175/month plans.

While these are all plans with unlimited data, the available GB refers to the amount of high-speed sharable data available to customers. Data is available at reduced speeds once this figure is reached.

The service is available for users with a 5G device supported by the n78 5G band, a Rogers spokesperson told MobileSyrup. Devices include iPhone 12 and above and the Galaxy S21 and above. Users must also have a multi-sim card and be in an area with 5G 3500MHz coverage, which currently includes Nanaimo, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver.

Bell

Bell followed closely behind Rogers’ announcement with details about the new 5G advancement in their own release.

A Bell spokesperson told MobileSyrup the spectrum will be available to customers with the Ultimate 45 or Ultimate 50 plan.

Ultimate 45 offers 45GB of data for $85/month. Ultimate 50 offers 50GB for $95/month. Like Rogers, the initial speed is covered by high-speed internet, followed by data with reduced speeds afterwards. Bell will start rolling the service out in Toronto and will expand to other cities and plans, the spokesperson said. While a release date was not provided, the spokesperson said more information will be shared soon.

It’s not clear at this time where Telus’ pricing will start or when it will roll out the spectrum on its 5G network. MobileSyrup has asked the company for details and will provide a response once available. What is known is that the service will be available to residents in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton and Victoria, with a compatible device.

Telus announces 3500MHz 5G deployment in Toronto, Montreal, and more

Telus has announced the deployment of 3500MHz spectrum that will allow “customers in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton and Victoria [to] enjoy an enhanced 5G experience.”

The Vancouver-based national telecom’s deployment comes on the heels of similar announcements from Rogers and Bell this week. Telus says the 3500MHz spectrum will help improve capacity, reduce latency, and bring faster speeds to users. The carrier plans to continue deploying 3500MHz spectrum through 2022 and 2023.

“The deployment of our 3500 MHz spectrum is an important step to unlocking the potential of 5G, particularly as it fuels innovation across different industries,” said Tony Geheran, executive VP and COO of Telus, in a press release.

Moreover, Telus noted that the 3500MHz spectrum will form the backbone of its rural wireless high-speed internet service. As it deploys 3500MHz spectrum across Canada, those living in rural communities will be able to access home internet speeds of up to 100Mbps. Telus plans to invest an additional $70 billion over the next four years in infrastructure, operations, and spectrum to support rural and urban customers.

Finally, Telus noted in its release that “customers located in areas covered by 3500 MHz spectrum, using compatible 5G devices, can take advantage of an Unlimited 5G+ plan to experience even faster speeds.” On Telus’ website, the carrier currently lists three plans, an ‘Unlimited 5G’ option and two ‘Unlimited 5G+’ plans. One of the main differences between the 5G and 5G+ plans is the maximum speed — both have speed caps, with the former offering speeds up to 250Mbps and the latter offering speeds up to 1Gbps. In other words, it sounds like you’ll need one of Telus’ more expensive plans to get the full benefits of 3500MHz spectrum.

It’s great to see 3500MHz spectrum finally starting to roll out. The Canadian government auctioned off the spectrum last summer, and now that carriers are deploying it, Canadians should start to really feel the benefits of 5G. 3500MHz spectrum is considered crucial to 5G — it occupies part of ‘mid-band’ 5G, also called ‘Sub-6.’ It differs from ‘low-band’ 5G, which uses a similar spectrum to existing 4G networks.

Mid-band 5G can provide higher capacity, speed, and lower latency over a decent range. There’s also ‘high-band’ 5G, or ‘mmWave,’ that can offer even faster speeds over shorter ranges. U.S. carriers have focused on mmWave deployments while Canada and other markets have prioritized mid-band. The next major chunk of the mid-band spectrum will be 3800MHz, which is currently in consultation.
