Telus invests millions to bring its PureFibre and 5G networks to Quebec’s North Shore region

Telus is investing $8 million to bring its PureFibre and 5G networks to the North Shore region in Quebec.

Telus will make the networks available in the Innu community of Ekuanitshit and the municipalities of Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan and Port-Menier.

“Today, broadband connectivity is more than a commodity: it is necessary to our work, entertainment, education and access to improved healthcare,” Nathalie Dionne, Telus’ interim vice-president of home solutions in Quebec, said. “Most importantly, it empowers our regions to grow, fast-track their environmental transition and dynamically promote their attractions.”

The funding is paired with a $3 million investment from the Governments of Canada and Quebec to bridge the digital divide in the province.

Collectively, the investments will benefit 600 families and businesses in the Innu community of Ekuanitshit and Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan.

The Vancouver-based telecom giant also made a similar announcement for the Lower St. Lawrence region, investing $20 million.

Telus invests $20 million to bring 5G and PureFibre networks to the Lower St. Lawrence region

Telus is investing $20 million to bring its PureFibre and 5G networks to the Lower St. Lawrence region.

The investment will go towards building a new wireless site in Saint-Damase and the rollout of Telus’ PureFibre network in the communities of Saint-Mathieu-Rioux and Lac-des-Aigles, and in the Lac Taché sector of Rimouski’s ZEC (Controlled Development Zone).

The $20 million investment is paired with $1.8 million coming from the Canadian and Quebec governments as part of the Operation High-Speed program, which will encourage digital innovation in local businesses, promote tourism and attract young workers and families to the region, reads Telus’ press release.

“Our 1,400 team members and ecosystem of partners in the Lower St. Lawrence region are using technology to create a better future for citizens by bridging the digital divide with our world-class networks,” said Nathalie Dionne, Telus’ interim vice-president, home solutions and customer excellence in Quebec. “Ninety-nine per cent of families and businesses in our Quebec territory are connected to our PureFibre network, and we continue to invest with the objective of connecting all households to high-speed Internet by September 2022.”

The new investment will result in over 400 families and businesses getting access to Telus’ PureFibre network, construction of new wireless sites in Saint-Damase for expanded 5G coverage in the community and support for local organizations and vulnerable families in the region.

“This is excellent news for the residents of Saint-Mathieu-de-Rioux, Lac-des-Aigles and the Lac Taché sector in Rimouski,” says Maxime Blanchette Joncas, Bloc Québécois MP for Rimouski-Neigette—Témiscouata — Les Basques. “Each improvement in connectivity in the region represents a concrete step towards a more prosperous and dynamic Lower St. Lawrence. Access to high speed Internet is essential, whether for professional, entrepreneurial or personal purposes. It is crucial to continue to invest so that everyone can enjoy the opportunities of connectivity.”

The investment is part of a bigger $70 billion fund that Telus’ aims to invest towards infrastructure, operations and spectrum licensing, and to improve the coverage, speed and reliability of its networks.

Telus plans on expanding its PureFibre network to more communities in Quebec, and other provinces in the coming years.

Telus abruptly pulls out of deal to buy Australian company Appen

Machine intelligence company Appen says Telus International has backed out of a deal to buy it out.

“This afternoon, Telus informed us that they were revoking their Indicative Proposal. No reasons were given,” Appen said in a press release.

Telus’ unsolicited proposal saw shares purchased at $9.50 AUD each (roughly $8.61 CAD). Appen received the offer on Wednesday and said the deal was subjected to several conditions. Telus’ abruptly pulled out soon after.

“Following receipt of the indicative proposal, Appen engaged with Telus in good faith through its advisers to better understand the conditions,” the company said.

It’s not clear why Telus took this position. The company has not made any public statements on the matter.

Canada takes 103rd place in study examining worldwide broadband cost

Canadians will spend an average of $58,000 on broadband over their lifespan, according to a recent study from MoneySuperMarket.

The study examined the cost for 135 countries and based life expectancy on the global average of 72 years. Canada lands at 103 on the list, which shows residents will spend an average of $67 a month on the service. Out of the countries examined, only 32 countries charge residents more for internet access.

While this information isn’t new, the analysis adds fire to the longstanding problem Canadians have been complaining about for years.

Any relief on the matter has been short-lived. While the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) lowered wholesale rates larger carriers can charge internet service providers (ISPs) in August 2019, they reversed the decision in May 2021. The CRTC said the decision was erroneous.

ISP TekSavvy has been working on getting the federal government to order the decision to be reversed. Their ‘Pay Less to Connect‘ campaign asks Canadians to remind their MPs to speak on the petition they filed a year ago. The campaign states the government has until May 27th to address the petition.

But why is Canada in this position? One answer comes from examining the countries with some of the highest internet rates. Brunei, for example, offers the third most expensive internet over on MoneySuperMarket’s list.

“While Brunei has great infrastructure, a lack of competition in the market keeps prices disproportionately high,” the study states.

The same is true for Canada. While there is good infrastructure, the lack of competition, with a market larger controlled by Bell, Rogers, and Telus, makes accessing cheaper internet difficult.

Telus to create 7,000 jobs in Quebec over the next four years

Vancouver-based telecom giant Telus is investing $11 billion in Quebec over the next four years.

The investment will go towards network infrastructure, operations, and spectrum across the province, creating 7,000 jobs. The move will also connect 350,000 homes with high-speed internet in Chaudière-Appalaches, Estrie, Lower St. Lawrence, Mauricie and North Shore.

“Through our investment, we are supporting the social and economic vibrancy of Quebec and ensuring that every member of our society has access to the technology that yields the opportunity to realize their full potential,” Darren Entwistle, Telus’ president said.

The move is part of a $70 billion investment that will see improvements rolled out throughout the country over the next four years. Telus announced $17 billion in similar investments for Alberta earlier this month.

Globalive reinforces its Freedom Mobile bid through network partnership with Telus

Globalive has signed a network and spectrum sharing agreement with telecom giant Telus to make Freedom Mobile available nationwide if successfully acquired by Globalive.

The agreement will last 20 years.

Rogers is currently in the process of selling Freedom Mobile, which is part of Shaw’s network. Rogers’ executives hope the move will appease competition concerns and aid its $26 billion merger with Shaw.

Globalive says the agreement with Telus will allow the company to deliver services with lower pricing and a quality network, “establishing a vigorously competitive environment for decades to come.”

The company says the partnership will eliminate any possibility of Rogers reacquiring Freedom Mobile.

“Canada needs a truly independent fourth carrier to ensure consumers have the benefits of a competitive market and a level playing field,” Anthony Lacavera, Globalive’s chairman, said. “We’re excited to bring Canadians closer to that reality with this transformational announcement.”

The historic deal with Telus marks the first time an established network has entered into an agreement with an independent competitor, Globalive says.

Globalive founded Wind Mobile in 2008 and sold it to Shaw for $1.6 billion in 2015. The company was renamed Freedom Mobile in 2016.

Lacavera has been vocal about his company’s desire to acquire Freedom Mobile and has made an offer worth $3.75 billion. 

“We’re the only ones that have competed successfully against the big three in the last 30 years. We’re the only ones that built a viable competitor that was standalone and independent,” Lacavera told MobileSyrup in March. 

But Globalive’s offer isn’t the only one on the table. Xplornet and Québecor have also been in talks to acquire Freedom Mobile, along with a group of buyers consisting of LiUNA Pension Fund of Central and Eastern Canada, the Musqueam Capital Corp, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Fengate Asset Management, and Aquilini Equities.

Telus’ challenge against Videotron 5G spectrum license rejected by Canadian Federal Court

The Canadian Federal Court officially rejects Telus’ challenge against Quebecor-owned Videotron. In September 2021, Telus and Bell filed a complaint against Videotron’s right to buy 5G spectrum in Western Canada.

Videotron purchased the rights for 3.5Hz in British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba during the summer of 2021. The deal was secured for $8.91 billion and served as the company’s formal expansion of its mobile services outside of Quebec while using the 5G spectrum.

Telus and Bell believe that Videotron does not meet the criteria required to do so. The company’s formal complaint states that Videotron was not already present on the western side of the country;  therefore, it should not have the right to buy 5G spectrum. Additionally, the complaints claim there is a lack of transparency.

In October 2021, Telus lost the initial court case against Videotron. Since this junction, Bell withdrew its complaints. However, Telus persisted. The most recent ruling from the Canadian Federal Court now rejects the objection. It’s not yet known whether Telus will file an appeal to the court.

The Canadian Federal Court found that Videotron used an affiliate called Fibrenoire, which is registered with the CRTC as a facilities-based provider. Fibrenoire was providing commercial telecom services to the general public, as confirmed by Videotron’s application.

Quebecor has been stirring up Canada’s telecom industry recently. The company is in the running to acquire Shaw Communications’ Freedom Mobile as well. Though, the deal is contingent on how Shaw’s merger with Rogers Communications pans out. However, it does appear as though the likelihood of the deal passing went up as the Competition Bureau looks into the merger over competitive concerns.

Telus will invest billions in Alberta over the next four years

Vancouver-based telecom giant Telus says it will invest $17 billion in Alberta over the next four years.

The investment will cover network infrastructure, operations, and spectrum.

It will also lead to 8,500 new jobs in the province, focusing on construction, engineering, and emerging technologies. The investment will connect hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses with Telus’ PureFibre internet and deliver 5G to remote communities in the province.

“Importantly, through our investment, we are supporting the social and economic vibrancy of Albertans and ensuring that every member of our society has access to the technology that yields the opportunity to realize their full potential,” Darren Entwistle, Telus’ CEO, said.

The company will also invest $70 billion across Canada by 2026.
