Ookla Q3 report names Telus Canada’s fastest mobile operator

Telus has kept its crown as Canada’s fastest mobile operator, according to a slew of new statistics in Ookla’s Q3 Canada Market Report for 2021.

For context, Ookla is the owner and operator of Speedtest.net, a free web service that analyzes your Internet’s performance.

According to data gathered from its speed-tracking tool, Ookla says Telus was the fastest mobile operator in Canada during Q3 2021, with a ‘Speed Score’ of 81.93.

Shaw came out on top as the country’s fastest fixed broadband provider, while the title of fastest 5G went to Bell for its median 5G download speed of 183.39 Mbps, narrowly beating Telus’ 176.38 Mbps.

Meanwhile, Vidéotron kept it steady for yet another fiscal quarter, earning the title of Canada’s most consistent mobile operator in Q3 with a score of 87.4 percent

In terms of geography, Ookla found that Newfoundland and Labrador are Canada’s fastest regions for both fixed broadband and mobile, clocking in a median download speed of 124.22 Mbps

Calgary was named the city with the highest population with the best median fixed broadband download speed (134.33 Mbps), while Halifax won the mobile download speed category (113.10 Mbps).

Finally, the report claims that while Samsung devices earned the fastest combined performance scores in Q3 with a median download speed of 64.14 Mbps, edging out Apple’s 58.12 Mbps, the iPhone 13 Pro Max was the fastest popular device overall with a median download speed of 164.63 Mbps.

Past Ookla reports from 2021 found that Canada is no longer among the top 10 fastest countries for internet speeds, that 5G speeds in Ottawa are middling compared to other capital cities, that Alberta’s Waterton Lakes National Park boasts the fastest download speeds amoung Canada’s national parks, and that SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service performs best in Saskatchewan.

Telus expands 5G service in nine Alberta locations

In a hefty single-day press release drop, Telus announced that its 5G internet services are now available to more Albertans in nine different parts of the province.

The cities and towns in question are Bonnyville, Fort McMurray, High Prairie, Hinton, Jasper, Okotoks, Vegreville, Vulcan, and Wetaskiwin.

This chunky expansion is funded by a $14.5 billion investment from Telus aimed at improving its 5G infrastructure and services in Alberta specifically between 2021 and 2024.

According to all nine press releases, Telus has invested “$51 billion in technology and operations” in Alberta since 2000.

Prior to today, Telus’ last network expansion update for Alberta was a 5G announcement on September 8th for the regions of Lethbridge and Rocky Mountain House.

Telus says it has spent “nearly $240 billion nationally in network infrastructure, operations and spectrum” across the country.

The Vancouver-based telecom carrier continues to claim that over 70 percent of Canadians will have access to its 5G network — which can reach speeds up to 1.7 Gbps — by the end of 2021.

Telus reminds BB10 BlackBerry users that network connectivity ends Jan. 4, 2022

Telus has reminded the roughly ten remaining Canadian BB10 BlackBerry users (I’m confident this is an accurate number) that the former Canadian smartphone giant will be “turning these devices down” on January 4th, 2022.

This means that whether you’re using a BB10 device with Telus, Rogers, Bell or any other Canadian carrier, your device will no longer be able to connect to the network and won’t support voice, data, SMS or 911 services.

Strangely, Telus’ tweet mentions January 22, 2022, as the shutdown date, while its landing page regarding BB10 devices cites January 4th, 2022. On BlackBerry’s website, the company mentions January 4th as BB10’s death day.

Back in 2017, BlackBerry committed to offering two more years of support for BB10 devices and two years of network access to other BBOS devices.

Telus says that Blackberry is “now taking steps to decommission or terminate infrastructure” related to devices running BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry Playbook OS 2.1 and earlier. The carrier has a complete list of devices affected by the network shut down.

The last BlackBerry 10 device to release was the Leap back in April 2015. However, popular BB10 smartphones phones like the Classic, the Z10 and Q10 also run the operating system. The last BlackBerry device to release in Canada was the Android-powered Key2 through the company’s branding and manufacturing partnership with TCL.

The most important thing to take away here is that your uncle, who insists BlackBerry is a Canadian company that makes stellar devices, will probably need to buy a modern smartphone manufactured in the last five years.

Telus and Bell announce two new health tech projects

Two of Canada’s “Big Three” telecommunications companies have each announced a new initiative in their health technology and community outreach divisions.

First, Telus is working with REACH Niagara to create a mobile health clinic offering medical care to marginalized communities living in the southern Ontario region, such as people without housing and migrant agricultural workers in the Niagara Fruit Belt.

According to the press release, the clinic-on-wheels is equipped with “Telus Health’s electronic medical record (EMR) technology, TelusMobility services and Telus LTE Wi-Fi network technology.”

The mobile clinic is designed to provide at-risk and low-income folks living in Niagara with easy access to COVID-19 testing, harm reduction services, mental health care, reproductive health services, and other medical treatments.

The clinic is part of Telus’ Health for Good program, which funds and operates mobile clinics across the country through a $10 million investment from the telecom carrier.

You can find Telus Health for Good mobile clinics in Edmonton, Halifax, Mississauga-Peel, Montreal, Niagara, Ottawa, Surrey, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria and Waterloo.

Meanwhile, Bell’s mental illness awareness program, Bell Let’s Talk, is partnering with the Strongest Families Institute (SFI) to launch a mobile app.

SFI offers a selection of family education programs to coach children and adults on how to manage anxiety, pain and stress.

The mobile app, available for iOS and Android devices, will let families remotely access the SFI’s programs and other “e-mental health services,” as per the press release.

The 2021 edition of Bell Let’s Talk Day raised $7.9 million in donations to various mental health foundations and funds.

New Telus program equips at-risk Indigenous women with smartphones

Telus is co-launching a new program to help Indigenous women who are “at risk or surviving violence” in partnership with four Indigenous community organizations in British Columbia.

The “Mobility for Good for Indigenous Women at Risk” program supplies free Telus smartphones and data plans that Indigenous organizations can distribute to women in their communities.

The idea behind the program is that having access to a smartphone with data gives someone at risk or surviving violence the ability to contact emergency services, access healthcare, and stay in touch with their support network of family and friends.

The press release cites the Final Report on Missing Murdered and Indigenous Women and Girls, which found that Indigenous women and girls “represent 24 percent of female homicide victims” and are “12 times more likely to be murdered or go missing than any other women.”

The program was created through a collaboration between Telus and the Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association, the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres, the Prince George Native Friendship Centre, and the Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of British Columbia.

Other Indigenous-led organizations interested in participating in the program can get involved by sending an email to ConnectingforGood@telus.com.

Telus expands 5G network to seven locations in British Columbia

Telus announced that seven communities in British Columbia can now access its 5G internet network.

This news affects residents and businesses in the following B.C. locations: Bulkley-Nechako, Fort St. James, Houston, Parksville, Port Hardy, Qualicum Beach, and Richmond.

Telus made the announcement in a series of back-to-back press releases shared on September 27th, which we’ve linked to at the end of this article.

A $13 billion investment from Telus is funding all seven of these expansions. The investment is aimed at improving Telus’ internet services in B.C. specifically, from now until 2024.

Other B.C. communities recently targeted by this investment include Maple Ridge and Burnaby.

Meanwhile, in Quebec, Telus also substantially expanded its 5G network this month in Outaouais, Lanaudière and Laurentides, as well as in the Greater Montreal region (including Montérégie).

The Vancouver-based company is investing $9 billion towards growing its 5G infrastructure in Quebec.

Rogers accuses Bell, Telus of opposing Shaw deal to avoid competition in CRTC filing

A recent Rogers filing to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) accuses Bell and Telus of opposing the proposed Shaw merger to avoid competing with a stronger broadcaster.

In the document Rogers filed, the carrier claims that acquiring Shaw would enable it to compete with Telus and Bell more effectively. According to The Globe and Mail, Rogers also claimed it would help the company compete against foreign competitors like Netflix.

It comes as a response to requests made to the CRTC by Bell and Telus to deny Rogers’ acquisition. Both carriers raised concerns that the Rogers/Shaw merger would make the company’s broadcasting distribution market too large.

Specifically, the two telecoms argued that Rogers would control 47 percent of the English-language broadcasting distribution market (distribution of TV channels through cable, satellite or internet) if the proposal went through. Shaw’s broadcasting distribution business includes a satellite TV service called Shaw Direct and cable networks in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern Ontario. Bell and Telus say that if Rogers achieved that scale, it would gain control over the availability of programming services.

However, The Globe and Mail notes that Rogers countered those claims by pointing out that Bell is already the largest broadcasting distributor and that the company attempted to buy Shaw as well.

First, Rogers claimed in the submission that Bell had a larger market capitalization than Rogers and Shaw combined and called Bell’s concerns “ironic.” Further, Rogers said that if Bell had gone through with its attempted acquisition of Shaw, it would be advocating for approval of a deal that would create an even larger broadcasting distributor than what Bell’s currently opposing.

The Globe and Mail points out that although Bell attempted to acquire Shaw, it ultimately chose not to because it wasn’t willing to take on the regulatory risk.

CRTC to hold public hearing about merger on November 22nd

Of course, Bell and Telus aren’t the only companies opposing the acquisition. The Canadian Communication Systems Alliance, which represents Canada’s independent internet, television and telephone providers, also filed an intervention. So did Cogeco Communications, which Rogers repeatedly attempted to acquire last year. Moreover, Corus Entertainment warned that the Rogers/Shaw merger could harm Global News.

There are also other regulators scrutinizing the proposed Rogers/Shaw merger. The Competition Bureau is reviewing whether the merger will result in less competition, while the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) will need to approve the transfer of spectrum licences. The CRTC’s role is to examine the transfer of broadcasting assets, and it will hold a public hearing on November 22nd.

It’s particularly interesting to see the carriers leverage competition as an argument both for and against the deal, given that so far, critics have lambasted the proposal for its potential to reduce competition and harm Canadians. Much of the criticism has been directed at wireless since Shaw owns Freedom Mobile. Should the wireless brand end up with Rogers, it’d further reduce the already lacking competition in Canadian wireless.

However, Freedom could be sold off as part of the deal, and Quebecor’s Videotron has indicated it might buy up the wireless business to help expand beyond Quebec. Ultimately, there’s still a long way to go in this process, and things could change significantly in the coming months.

Telus supplies tech to Edmonton police’s online classifieds exchange zones

When you’re deciding on a safe public location to meet up with that internet stranger whose gently-used air fryer you bought on Kijiji, your first thought probably isn’t a police station.

However, that’s exactly what Telus and the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) are encouraging people to do, with the launch of three new “Buy and Sell Exchange Zones” for online classifieds meet-ups in Alberta’s capital city.

Each “zone” consists of a pair of stalls, equipped with 24/7 surveillance cameras, set-up in the parking lots of four police stations across Edmonton in total.

The concept isn’t a new one, with similar zones set up across Canada in cities including Calgary, Halton, Peel, Saskatoon, Waterloo, and Winnipeg.

The unique bit, according to the press release, is that all the technology in the zones is provided by Telus, presumably from the telecom company’s line of smart home security cameras.

While the cameras are always running, the EPS said there’s no one specifically tasked with monitoring the feed, and that footage is only accessed if there’s an incident or investigation related to an exchange.

In 2020, the EPS reportedly made “20 arrests, laid 59 charges, and recovered $44,000 worth of stolen property through online buy and sell sites,” in addition to receiving “276 reports of buy and sell scams with a total financial loss of $35,680.”

Edmonton’s four “Buy and Sell Exchange Zones” are located at the following EPS stations:
14203 50 Street Northwest
104 Youville Drive East Northwest
1351 Windermere Way
16505 100 Avenue Northwest
