Telus announces $60 million investment to bring gigabit fibre to Maple Ridge, B.C.

Telus has announced that it is investing $60 million to connect the city of Maple Ridge to its gigabit-enabled fibre optic network, which should increase wireless and internet speeds throughout the region.

The investment is part of a bigger $13 billion infrastructure and operations fund to “support the province throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent economic recovery,” reads Telus’ post.

According to Telus, development for adding its PureFibre network is already underway, and the majority of homes and businesses in Maple Ridge will be able to access its services by the end of 2023.

Telus says it’s invested more than $5 billion since 2013 into connecting 137 communities and 62 First Nations communities across B.C., Alberta and parts of Quebec to its PureFibre network. The company says it has the largest pure fibre-to-fibre (FTTP) network in Western Canada.

Get a free 55-inch Samsung 4K TV with Telus’ internet and Optik TV plans

Telus is offering a limited-time promotion where you can get a free 55-inch Samsung 4K HDR Smart TV (Samsung 55TU7000, available for $848) if you get a Telus internet and Optik TV connection.

The promotion requires you to sign up for Telus’ ‘Internet 75′ plan, which, as the name suggests, offers 75Mbps download and upload speeds. The plan costs $100/month and you have to enter a two-year term.

You also need to sign up for Telus’ Optik TV where you can choose which live TV and streaming services you want, at no extra cost. The Optik TV plan will cost you $78/month for a two-year term.

So that’s $178/month for Telus’ internet and Optik TV connection, which is guaranteed to stay the same for the two-year contract. By the end of the contract, you’d have paid $4,272 + taxes. Further, Telus is offering free installation and hardware rental, and a $200 bill credit if you place your order online. “Bill credit will be applied upon order completion and will appear on your first bill after activation,” reads Telus’ promotion page.

So effectively, you would pay $4072 + taxes over the course of two years and get a 75Mbps upload/download speed internet, Optik TV connection with your choice of channels and streaming services along with a 55-inch Samsung 4K HDR Smart TV. Learn more about the promotion here.

Acorn TV now available on Telus’ Optik TV

Telus’ Optik TV customers can now access AMC Networks’ Acorn TV, boasting an extensive British and international programming catalogue.

Available on channel 377, Acorn TV is free to access until tomorrow, September 21st, after which you can choose to add the channel to your subscription as part of Optik TV’s Variety Theme Pack for $8 per month.

“We are excited to be the first content provider in Canada to bring Acorn TV in a theme pack and its top-rated British and international shows to our Optik TV customers. As we move into cooler weather across Canada, we know our customers will be looking for fresh new content to discover and enjoy at home,” said Zainul Mawji, executive vice-president of home solutions, Telus, in its news release.

Whitstable Pearl, Manhunt, My Life is Murder, Bloodlands and many more exclusive drama, mystery, and comedy shows are available on Acorn TV, with new shows added every week.

Rogers, Telus and Bell named global leaders in 5G gaming by Opensignal

Rogers, Telus and Bell are among the best in the world at providing players reliable 5G network connections for smooth mobile gaming experiences, according to independent analytics company Opensignal.

The telecom giants each took home a “Global Leader” distinction at Opensignal’s 2021 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards, with all three scoring above the global average of 76.7 points out of a possible 100 in the “5G Games Experience” category.

Points are earned by measuring network conditions that affect mobile gaming for players, such as “latency, packet loss and jitter.”

Among the Canadian carriers, Rogers led with 86.4 points, followed closely by Telus with 83 and Bell with 83.5.

The seven winners in the “5G Games Experience” category were South Korea’s KT, SK Telecom and LG U+, the Netherlands’ T-Mobile and KPN, Singapore’s Singtel, and Ireland’s Vodafone.

Rogers, Telus and Bell were also recognized in the “Games Experience — 5G Global Impact” category, which measures the improvement in games experience between a carrier’s 5G network versus its 4G network.

In this category, Rogers came out ahead of its Canadian competitors, with Opensignal noting a 17.2 percent improvement between the carrier’s 5G vs. 4G gaming experience, while Telus (13.8 percent) and Bell (13.4 percent) were once again closely ranked.

For context, the global average score for the “Games Experience — 5G Global Impact” category is only 8.2 percent.

Still, “5G Games Experience” and “Games Experience” were the sole categories in which Canada-based telecom companies were recognized.

The other seven categories — with no Canadian winners — were “5G Availability,” “5G Download Speed,” “5G Upload Speed,” “5G Video Experience,” “Download Speed,” “Upload Speed,” and “Video Experience.”

To see if your own 5G internet service is up to snuff, Opensignal released an app in May 2021 that lets users independently check whether they’re actually connected to a 5G network.

Telus Kits for Kids program donates 14,000 backpacks with school supplies across Canada

Telus’ annual Kits for Kids program is back again this year.

This year, the carrier is donating 14,000 backpacks that each include a pencil case, coloured pencils, pencils, pens, erasers, a flexible ruler, exercise books, loose-leaf papers and a Telus Wise insert with tips and resources on how to keep kids safe online.

Since 2006, Telus has provided 180,000 free backpacks to kids across the country, as well as nearly one million care items in local communities and 30,000 refurbished computers to local schools.

“As families across the country begin a new school year, many find themselves struggling with the financial challenges this season presents, which are compounded by the ongoing pandemic,” said Darren Entwistle, the president and CEO of Telus, in a press statement.

In addition to the donations, Telus says more than 5,000 retired and current employees participate as community ambassadors in 23 clubs across B.C, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

Telus invests $28.5 million to improve its internet services in Burnaby

Telus continues to expand its internet services in Western Canada with a new $28.5 million investment in the city of Burnaby, British Columbia.

According to the press release, more Burnaby households will soon have access to Telus’ high-speed fibre optic internet — which the carrier calls its “PureFibre” network — thanks to new wireless infrastructure to be built later this year.

Burnaby is the latest region targeted by Telus as part of the Vancouver-based carrier’s $13 billion investment toward upgrading its operations in British Columbia. The expansion, which launched in May 2021, is expected to continue through to 2024.

Most recently, in August 2021, the city of Quesnel, B.C. was connected to Telus’ 5G network thanks to funds from the same investment.

This year has seen all three Canadian carrier giants — Telus, Bell and Rogers — pour billions of dollars into building and updating their respective internet infrastructure networks nationwide.

Outaouais, Lanaudière and Laurentides regions can now access Telus 5G

Internet users in the Quebec regions of Outaouais, Lanaudière and Laurentides are now able to connect to Telus’ 5G network.

According to the press releases, this latest network expansion covers communities including Blainville, Cantley, Chelsea, Gatineau, Joliette, Lavaltrie, L’Assomption, Mirabel, Saint-Eustache, Saint-Jérôme, Saint-Roch-de-L’Achigan, Sainte-Thérèse, and Terrebonne.

The expansion is funded through a $9 billion investment from Telus, announced in May 2021.

The investment is dedicated to developing Telus’ infrastructure and services, specifically in the province of Quebec.

Most recently, in July, residents of Laval, Quebec gained access Telus’ 5G network in another regional service expansion funded by this same investment.

Telus to expand 5G to Greater Montreal regions in $90 million investment

Vancouver-based national telecom Telus announced plans to expand its 5G network to the Montreal, Lanaudière, Laurentides and Montérégie regions.

The expansion comes as part of a larger $90 million investment in infrastructure in the Greater Montreal area, itself part of a $9 billion investment in Quebec through 2024. Through the expansion, Telus says that customers in over 70 additional communities will have access to its 5G network.

“The significant investments we are making in our world-leading network to rapidly expand our 5G footprint is enabling us to connect the citizens of the Greater Montreal to the people, resources and critical information they need as we continue to navigate the global pandemic,” said Darren Entwistle, president and CEO of Telus.

Telus notes that it leverages multiple vendors, including Samsung, Ericsson and Nokia to power its 5G network. The carrier says it plans to expand 5G to over 615 communities, including 157 in Quebec, and aims to cover over 70 percent of the Canadian population by the end of the year.

Interestingly, Telus also cited an Opensignal report that gave the carrier several awards, including Fastest 5G Download and Upload Speeds, Best 5G Video Experience, Best 5G Availability and more. However, it’s worth noting that Telus tied with Bell and, sometimes, Rogers in several of those sectors. Additionally, Opensignal’s most recent 5G experience report showed Rogers breaking away from the three-way ties to claim the best 5G Availability and Reach, although Bell and Telus retained their lead in download speeds.
