Telus says Stream+ customers can’t add extra Netflix members

There’s still some confusion around Netflix’s account-sharing changes in Canada, but generally, Canadian subscribers need to pony up $8 more each month to share Netflix with people outside their households. Except, Canadians who get Netflix through Telus’ Stream+ bundle won’t have that option.

A Telus spokesperson confirmed to MobileSyrup that “At this time, there is no option to add ‘extra members’ to Netflix through your Stream+ account.”

Of course, that leaves some uncertainty. For one, it’s not clear if that means Stream+ customers will be able to continue sharing Netflix with people outside their homes (my guess is this won’t be the case). Moreover, it’s not clear if or when Telus will allow people to add extra members through Stream+, or what impact that will have on billing. Plus, if someone with a Netflix account who added additional members switches to Stream+, it’s not clear what will happen to the additional members.

When pressed for additional information, Telus did not elaborate.

Currently, Stream+ costs $25 per month (or $20 for two years when added alongside an activation or renewal of any Telus 5G+ or CAN-US plan). The Stream+ bundle includes Netflix Premium, Apple TV+, Discovery+ and Telus TV+. Netflix Premium costs $20.99/mo in Canada. Premium also now enables the addition of two extra members at $7.99/mo each — check out how to add members here.

However, the Telus Stream+ website explains in a FAQ section that people with existing Netflix accounts can bring them over to the Stream+ bundle to keep their watch history, preferences and account settings. Importantly, it notes that “billing will also transfer over to Telus.”

Ultimately, several unknowns remain around Netflix and Stream+. My two cents on the issue; Telus will likely adjust Stream+ in the coming weeks to work with extra members. If Telus doesn’t, it sounds like there could maybe be a loophole enabling Stream+ users to keep sharing their accounts, but I really wouldn’t bank on it (and you shouldn’t, either). This story will get updates if Telus provides any more information about Stream+.

Telus reportedly considered removing $85/mo 25GB plan, adjusting other plan prices

MobileSyrup has learned details of changes Telus planned to implement to its mobile offerings starting February 21st, which include eliminating the lowest cost plan and adjusting pricing across the board.

These upcoming plan changes were linked to a change Telus made to its website that MobileSyrup reported on earlier this week. On February 15th, Telus added a banner to the plans on its website warning that the plans would end on February 20th. Following publication, Telus removed the banners from the website.

A Telus spokesperson confirmed to MobileSyrup that the banners were put up “in error” and were taken down.

According to the information obtained by MobileSyrup, Telus backtracked on the forthcoming plan changes and scrapped the plans. MobileSyrup understands that Telus doesn’t know if or when it will make the changes.

A Telus spokesperson told MobileSyrup that “nothing is changing” with the current plans on its website and didn’t respond to questions about whether Telus had previously intended to change its plans.

Based on the information obtained by MobileSyrup, Telus planned to remove its current base plan, which offers 25GB of 5G data at speeds of up to 250Mbps (throttled to 512Kbps beyond the 25GB) for $85/mo. The plan also includes Telus’ standard suite of features, including unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, shareable data, voicemail and more.

Next, Telus planned to offer a $90/mo plan at the base level. This plan would include 50GB of 5G+ data — Telus’ current 5G+ plan offer data with speeds of up to 1Gbps (again, throttled to 512Kbps beyond the data allotment). This plan appears to be a slightly cheaper version of Telus’ current $95/50GB 5G+ plan.

The other changes shared with MobileSyrup include adding a $100/mo plan with 100GB of 5G+ data and a $110/100GB 5G+ plan. The difference between these two plans would be the $110 option includes Canada/U.S. calling, texting and data. Those appear to be replacements for Telus’ current $105/60GB and $125/100GB plans, both of which offer Canada/U.S. calling.

Aside from removing the $85/mo plan, these changes generally appear positive with slightly lower prices and the same or more data. It remains to be seen if Telus will eventually make these changes.

Telus website adds banner to plans warning they end on February 20

Vancouver-based national telecom Telus has added notices to its website that several of its current plans end on February 20th.

MobileSyrup spotted the change on February 15th when a purple banner that reads “Ends February 20th” appeared on all four of Telus’ in-market plans.

Telus did not respond to requests for comment in time for publication.

It’s not clear what, exactly, the banners mean or what customers can expect come February 20th. The likely scenario is that Telus will deploy new or updated plans, perhaps with new pricing. It’s also possible the change was a mistake on Telus’ part. The current plans are listed below:

  • $85/mo Unlimited 25 5G – 25GB of data at up to 250Mbps speed, unlimited nationwide talk and text
  • $95/mo Unlimited 50 5G+ – 50GB of data at up to 1Gbps speed, unlimited nationwide talk and international text
  • $105/mo Unlimited CAN-US 60 5G+ – 60GB of data at up to 1Gbps speed, unlimited talk, international text, unlimited talk, text and data in the U.S.
  • $125/mo Unlimited CAN-US 100 5G+ – 100GB of data at up to 1Gbps speed, unlimited talk, international text, unlimited talk, text and data in the U.S.

It’s worth noting that Telus currently offers “unlimited” data, which means customers can keep using data beyond the plan’s allotment, but at a slower, throttled speed of up to 512Kbps.

No increase in mobile customers for Telus, Q4 results show

Telecom giant Telus says its 2022 fourth quarter financial results are the best Q4 results “on record.”

The company added 112,000 mobile customers, which remained unchanged compared to the year prior. Despite not seeing growth in the section, Telus increased its mobile network revenue by $104 million (6.5 percent) partially due to an increase its connected device subscriber base. Higher ARPU (referring to how much Telus made off each mobile customer) also played a role, which Telus largely attributes to increased roaming.

Telus also added 106,000 connected devices and saw revenue from mobile equipment increase by 9.7 percent.

However, the company’s total profits saw a sharp decline. Telus pulled $265 million in profit this quarter, compared to $663 million in Q4 2021.

Telus funding pilot program using VR to decrease anxiety, use of prescribed medication

Alma Hospital is testing a new virtual reality (VR) anxiety-management project that aims to improve patient well-being.

The pilot will see participants engage in “peaceful scenes and guided breathing exercises” using immersive VR headsets. The goal is to improve medical treatments and decrease the use of prescribed anxiety medication.

The Quebec hospital has partnered with Paperplane Therapeutics to make it happen. Telus is providing financial support.

The need to address mental-health consultation is urgent, Jean Lamoureux, executive director of the Fondation de l’Hôtel-Dieu d’Alma, said. Consultation requests increased upwards of 40 percent during the pandemic; inflation and labour shortages are also increasing stress levels.

“Our foundation is working hard to be at the forefront of mental healthcare and, thanks to the innovation of Paperplane Therapeutics and Telus, we will transform the way health services are delivered, while having a significant positive impact on patient wellbeing through the use of technology.”

The hospital will also trial the technology in other departments as well, including oncology.

Telecom news roundup: the season of acquisitions [Jan. 28-Feb. 4]

Rogers’ takeover of Shaw has dominated telecom headlines for the last two years. While it is the largest telecom acquisition in Canadian history, it’s not the only recent one. Bell has quietly acquired Distributel and Telus has also reportedly taken over two independent providers.

For more information, here’s a recap of some of the biggest telecom stories in Canada this week.

Business

Rogers, Shaw, and Québecor have extended the deadline to close their associated acquisitions to February 17th. The parties are still waiting for Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne to approve the transfer of Shaw’s wireless licenses to Vidéotron. Rogers and Shaw previously set their voluntary deadline as January 31st. But the Minister has stated he’s in no hurry to provide approval and wants Rogers and Québecor to commit to wireless affordability.

As the new chair of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) Vicky Eatrides wants to waste no time revamping wholesale internet pricing. In an interview with MobileSyrup, she promised a new model is coming soon.

SaskTel continues to roll out its 5G network, which is now available in Lumsden and other communities.

The Saskatchewan telecom company also partnered with Stafford Communications to increase broadband access in rural areas in the province.

Bell and Staples have entered an exclusive partnership. The office supply store will set up in-store kiosks to sell Bell, Virgin Plus, and Lucky Mobile services. The kiosks will come in the spring.

The CRTC has a new Ontario commissioner. Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez has elected Bram Abramson to the position.

Bell Aliant says a software update led to a 911 landline outage in the Atlantic provinces. The problem occurred in the early hours of January 31st and impacted residents in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I. The outage lasted two and a half hours and resulted from a 10-digit dialling change in New Brunswick.

Bell announced its plans to acquire Distributel in September 2022, only to quietly complete the transaction months later. Bell didn’t share any details of the regulatory approval process or how much the transaction was worth.

Rogers released its last quarterly report for 2022, showing it added 193,000 wireless post paid customers. The telecom company also increased its profits by 25 percent.

Telus has grown its banner by quietly adding internet service providers Start.ca and Altima to its business profile.

ISP Start.ca reportedly joins Telus banner

Telus appears to have acquired internet service provider (ISP), Start.ca.

Peter Nowak, an executive at ISP TekSavvy, shared the news on Twitter. Nowak didn’t share how he confirmed the acquisition.

It’s unclear how many customers the acquisition impacts and if it went through regulatory approval.

Additionally, Nowak states the telecom giant has also overtaken a second ISP, Altima.

MobileSyrup cannot independently confirm the news but will provide an update once available.

This isn’t the first time Altima’s name has been associated with Telus. Flanker brand Koodo partnered with the ISP in December to offer discounted internet services.

Both Altima and Start.ca serve Ontario residents.
