Tesla to begin exporting Model Y from Shanghai to Canada

Tesla is expected to start exporting a version of its Model Y electric vehicle to Canada, marking the first time the company will ship cars from China to North America.

The move is set to connect the EV company’s most cost-efficient factory globally to its largest market, with the Model Y holding the title of Tesla’s best-selling model worldwide.

The news comes from a production memo obtained by Reuters after Tesla’s recent announcement of a new and more affordable Model Y variant for Canadian customers. The EV was ruled to be $10,000 CAD less than the current long-range version. The SUV-styled crossover is set to be delivered between May and July of 2023 and will start at $59,990 CAD.

Many suspect that, based on the similarity between the Canadian and Chinese Model Y specs, the refresh will feature LFP batteries made at Giga Shanghai.

Production of the soon-to-be Canadian Model Y began earlier this month at Tesla’s Shanghai factory with a quota of around 9,000 vehicles for this quarter. It’s been rumoured that the build quality from the company’s Shanghai factory is superior to that from the Fremont, California factory, meaning that the new Model Y could exceed some expectations in the Canadian market.

Vehicles produced in the Chinese factory also benefit from a cost reduction, with CEO Elon Musk previously highlighting that the Shanghai plant had the “lowest cost structure” of the company’s factories.

The potential move from Tesla marks another high point for the company after recently being found not at fault in a Model S Autopilot crash lawsuit.

Tesla Model Y under NHTSA scrutiny for steering wheel malfunction

Tesla’s yoke-shaped steering wheels have always been controversial. The EV’s steering wheel is again becoming a topic of conversation, but the shape of the wheel isn’t the problem this time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into the Model Y after reports of the vehicle’s steering wheel detaching surfaced on social media.

According to the NHTSA, it has received two separate reports of the Model Y’s steering wheel detaching, with Prerak Patel’s experience going viral on Twitter.

“Family was excited to receive Tesla Y delivery on 1/24/2023. Was driving on highway and all the sudden steering wheel fall off, was lucky enough there was no car behind and I was able to pull on divider,” wrote Patel.

According to the NHTSA, both Teslas were delivered missing a steering wheel retaining bolt. “Sudden separation occurred when the force exerted on the steering wheel overcame the resistance of the friction fit while the vehicles were in motion. Both known incidents occurred at low vehicle mileage,” wrote the NHTSA, adding that it now plans to assess the risk of the same steering wheel defect appearing in other Tesla Model Y vehicles.

Patel was given two options by Tesla. He could either keep the vehicle with assurance that the steering wheel won’t malfunction again, or he could get a new Model Y. Patel chose the latter.

This isn’t the first time Tesla has gotten in trouble with the NHTSA. Earlier this year, the NHTSA had questions for Tesla after CEO Elon Musk tweeted that a future software update would remove a driver monitoring safeguard from the company’s vehicles.

The safeguard requires drivers to keep their hands on the wheel when using the Autopilot Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. Similarly, last year, Tesla was forced to recall over 130,000 vehicles due to a CPU heating issue.

Tesla Model Y refresh to go into production in 2024

Tesla is reportedly planning a refresh of its popular Model Y, code-named “Juniper,” according to sources familiar with the matter.

The update is said to involve changes to both the exterior and interior of the vehicle, with production scheduled to begin in October 2024, as shared by Reuters, via TeslaNorth.

The report also states that Tesla has requested quotes from multiple suppliers for the new Model Y Juniper. The planned refresh comes as Tesla prepares to launch its Model 3 Highland refresh, which will simplify the interior and exterior builds of the car. It is not entirely certain whether the Model Y Juniper will follow the same simplified design direction as the Model 3 Highland.

Tesla North says that the Model 3 Highland will be manufactured at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, as soon as November.

Overall, the Model Y Juniper refresh is an exciting development for Tesla. With production scheduled to begin in 2024, there’s still a lot of time to speculate about what new features and improvements the updated vehicle will bring.

Some 2023 Model 3 Teslas are hitting the road with Model Y’s turn signals

Tesla might reportedly be producing the Model 3 Performance variant with its higher-end Model Y‘s tail lights, as spotted by a buyer this week, and reported by TeslaNorth.

The buyer (u/InformalSky8443), who picked up their vehicle in Forth Worth, Texas, wrote on Reddit that their vehicle has both the C-style brake lights and the Amber turn signals.  “I think I lucked out because they gave me one with Model Y tail lights,” wrote u/InformalSky8443. “Or was there a design change?”

Other users commented on u/InformalSky8443 post, saying their 2023 Model 3 comes with Red turn lights, while a different user said, “I ordered mine on Sept 9 and picked up on Oct 29 and have the amber turn signals.”

Similarly, a different user pointed out a study done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that determined that “amber signals show a 5.3 percent effectiveness in reducing two-vehicle crashes where a lead vehicle is rear struck in the act of turning left, turning right, merging into traffic, changing lanes, or entering/leaving a parking space.”

This doesn’t seem to be a mixup. Amber signals are reportedly a standard for cars in Europe and Australia. Tesla Model Y was updated to feature Amber turn signals soon after its launch in 2020, and now it seems that the upgrade is making its way to the Model 3.

Tesla EVs equipped with pothole detection and suspension height adjustment

Get ready for your pothole nightmares to go away with a pothole scanning system and suspension adjustment features arriving for specific Tesla models.

According to Electrek, Tesla Model S and Model X will feature a “tough road map” which will include pothole detection and an ‘Adaptive Suspension’ feature which will adjust vehicle suspension accordingly when using the ‘rough road map’ feature.

However, this is not a surprise to many Elon Musk followers, as the Tesla CEO tweeted in 2020 that Tesla cars would soon have these features. “This adjustment may occur at various locations, subject to availability, as the vehicle downloads rough road map data generated by Tesla cars,” he tweeted.

In order to enable the features in the Model S and Model X, you’ll need to make sure you’re on the latest update 2022.20, “Controls > Suspension > Active Suspension Damping, and select the Comfort or Auto Setting,” as noted by Tesla.

Tesla also notes, “the instrument cluster will continue to indicate when the suspension is raised for comfort.”

Tesla will join Ford as the only current automakers to install pothole scanning technology, with Ford being the first to do so with plans to install individual pothole detection and instant suspension damping.

Tesla to disable Passenger Play feature while driving

Tesla has agreed to disable its Passenger Play feature while its vehicle is in use and in motion. The feature has faced obvious criticisms as it enabled the ability to play games when the car was being used.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently launched an investigation. It appeared to have encouraged Tesla to react and make meaningful changes to the way the feature would operate. Through a software update, Passenger Play will no longer be enabled when the vehicle is in motion, NHTSA confirmed to The New York Times, via BBC.

“Passenger Play will now be locked and unusable when the vehicle is in motion,” NHTSA said to The New York Times. Tesla has not made an official statement on the matter.

The NHTSA investigation began after Tesla owner Vince Patton filed a complaint when he discovered he could play games while driving. The US safety body felt as though Passenger Play “may distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash”. All four Tesla models (S, X, Y, and 3) were probed as a part of the investigation.

The feature is fully integrated into Tesla’s touchscreen and OS. Initially, the Tesla Passenger Play was available when the car was not in motion. However, in December 2020, Tesla changed that and allowed users to play games when the vehicle was being driven. Tesla intended for it to be used by the passenger. However, nothing stopped the driver from accessing the games at their leisure as well.

Over the past year, this feature began to cause worry as it could unintentionally encourage distractions while the driver is controlling a Tesla.

Tesla’s electric vehicles offer more than 20 games to play when parked and three that were enabled when the car was in motion. The three games are Solitaire, Sky Force Reloaded, and Battle of Polytopia: Moonrise.
