Amazon Prime Video uses Homelander meme to take a jab at Twitter’s blue check removal

Amazon Prime Video is having a bit of fun with the recent news of Twitter’s gradual removal of blue checkmarks for all legacy users, posting a rather humourous meme from the hit show The Boys.

The meme depicts the character Homelander (who is labelled as Twitter) pushing his son (depicted as Twitter’s blue check mark) off a roof. Prime Video posted the photo to its Twitter account, captioned, “Well… he can do what he wants 🤷 #TheBoys.”

Take a look for yourself.

Amazon Prime Video was not the only notable account to comment on CEO Elon Musk’s push to persuade users to join Twitter Blue. Stephen King’s blue check remained intact, with the author claiming he had not paid for verification.

However, Musk answered by stating that he has been paying for some notable figures blue checkmarks, such as William Shatner and LeBron James.

Even with jokes from companies like Amazon, some users have not taken kindly to Musk’s recent moves, with actor Ben Stiller saying it was “quite possibly” time to get off Twitter.

In other Twitter news, the site has removed the ‘Government-funded’ labels from news organizations’ accounts.

The Boys helped Ontario film and TV production achieve record-breaking 2022

Ontario reported its highest-ever film and TV production levels in 2022, bringing in $3.15 billion to the province’s economy.

The news comes from Ontario Creates, the government division focused on growing Ontario’s creative industries. Altogether, 2022 productions led to the creation of 45,891 full-time equivalent direct and spin-off jobs in Ontario.

In particular, Ontario Creates pointed to two major productions in the province: Women Talking, an Oscar-winning drama film from Toronto’s Sarah Polley, and Prime Video’s The Boys, which was 2022’s most-watched superhero series. Both were filmed in Toronto, with production on The Boys Season 4 still underway in the city.

Other recent movies and shows filmed in Ontario include Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy and Sex/Life, Paramount’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the upcoming Keifer Sutherland-led Rabbit Hole and Crave’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

Meanwhile, Ontario Creates found that domestic film and TV production contributed $1.20 billion, an increase of 25 percent. This means it now accounts for 38 percent of total film and TV production spending in Ontario, a four percent increase from 2021.

Ontario Creates notes that this doesn’t account for commercial production or broadcaster in-house production, which are estimated at over $1.4 billion in 2022. This would bring Ontario productions’ total economic contributions in 2022 to $4.5 billion. It’s also worth stressing that this is only focused on film and television; of the nearly 1,000 studios making up Canada’s $5.5 billion video game industry, roughly 300 are based in Ontario.

Here’s what you can see at Toronto Comicon 2023 this weekend

The annual Toronto Comicon event returns to Ontario this week.

Taking place from March 17th to 19th, the pop-culture show offers a variety of programming related to movies, TV shows, comics and more. While it’s a smaller-scale event compared to its sister show, Fan Expo, in the summer, there’s still a decent amount to check out.

Here are some of the streaming and gaming highlights for MobileSyrup readers:

Assassin’s Creed’s Edward Kenway

Matt Ryan, who did the voice and motion capture for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway, is making an appearance. While he’s since been best known for playing the charming sorcerer Constantine in DC projects like Legends of Tomorrow, his role as Edward is noteworthy, considering Black Flag is one of the most beloved Assassin’s Creed games (it was also made in Canada over at Ubisoft Montreal!).

Ryan is appearing all three days and will host a panel on Saturday at 1:45pm.  More on his schedule is available here.

The Boys extravaganza

The fourth season of Amazon’s popular gritty superhero series is currently filming in Toronto, which makes it the perfect opportunity for some of the cast to show up. In fact, almost all of the series’ key players are attending Toronto Comicon:

  • Karl Urban (Billy Butcher)
  • Jack Quaid (Hugh “Hughie” Campbell, Jr.)
  • Jessie T. Usher (Reggie Franklin/A-Train)
  • Tomer Capone (Serge/Frenchie)
  • Laz Alonso (Marvin T. “Mother’s” Milk)
  • Karen Fukuhara (Kimiko Miyashiro/The Female) [also co-starred in last year’s The Callisto Protocol]
  • Nathan Mitchell (Black Noir) [from Mississauga, Ontario]
  • Colby Minifie (Ashley Barrett)
  • Claudia Doumit (Victoria Neuman)

They’ll be appearing on different days for autographs, photo ops and panels. In fact, there are so many of them that there will be two The Boys panels:

Saturday, March 18th at 12:30pm — Laz Alonso, Claudia Doumit, Jack Quaid and Karen Fukuhara
Sunday, March 19th at 12:30pm — Karl Urban, Jessie T. Usher, Tomer Capone, Colby Minifie and Nathan Mitchell

The Mandalorian’s Armorer

Emily Swallow, who plays The Armorer in The Mandalorian, is one of the show’s guests. Video game fans may also recognize her for her small role of Emily in The Last of Us Part II.

Swallow will appear all three days and host a panel on Sunday at 11:15am. She’ll also be hosting a special ticketed karaoke event on Friday at 7:30pm. More information on her schedule can be found here.

Other guests include Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings series), Toronto’s own Robbie Amell (Upload), Danielle Panabaker (The Flash), Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Steve Agee (Peacemaker).

The full Toronto Comicon schedule can be found here. Tickets for the show start at $27.

The Boys used Brantford, Ontario as stand-in for key Russia scene

Amazon’s Prime Video has revealed behind-the-scenes details on a number of Ontario filming locations in The Boys.

In a Twitter thread, the official Prime Video Canada account broke some of these down, including the particularly amusing tidbit that a key Season 3 scene set in Russia involved Brantford, Ontario. The scene in question follows The Boys as they break into a Russian facility, and the exterior for this location was actually a courthouse near Brantford’s City Hall.

Given that the show primarily films in Toronto, it’s fun to see a smaller city in Southwestern Ontario also factor into the production. Another highlight of the Twitter thread is the fact that part of The Boys‘ Season 2 premiere — in which The Deep (Chase Crawford) causes a stir at a water park — was shot at Brampton’s Wet ‘n Wild park.

Other locations that Prime Video Canada spotlighted are a little more obvious, like Homelander (Antony Starr) and Stormfront (Aya Cash) holding a press conference in front of Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall.

The Boys is one of Prime Video’s most popular TV series, which makes it especially notable that it’s shot in Ontario. On top of that, the superhero series is executive produced by Vancouver’s Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and co-stars Mississauga, Ontario’s Nathan Mitchell as Black Noir.

The first three seasons of The Boys are currently streaming on Prime Video, with the fourth season expected to begin filming in a few weeks. Who knows where in Ontario Season 4 might shoot?

Amazon drops new trailer for The Boys Season 3 ahead of June premiere

Amazon has released a new trailer for the third season of its popular The Boys series on Prime Video.

In the two-and-a-half-minute trailer, Homelander (Antony Starr) has become increasingly unhinged following the events of Season 2, while Butcher (Karl Urban) takes a special serum to temporarily become a supe and directly take on Vought. Supernatural‘s Jensen Ackles can also be seen as a new character named Soldier Boy.

Fans have had to wait a bit longer for Season 3 following the October 2020 Season 2 finale, due to COVID-19 production delays. That said, it’s finally set to premiere on Prime Video on June 3rd, with new episodes rolling out every week. It’s worth noting that the series was filmed in Toronto, is executive produced by Vancouver’s Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and co-stars Mississauga, Ontario’s Nathan Mitchell as Black Noir.

The eight-episode animated series is set in the same universe as the Prime Video show, The Boys, which is filmed in Toronto.

Each episode sports its own animation style and is about 12-14 minutes long, similar to Netflix’s Love, Death + Robots and Disney+’s Star Wars: Visions. Additionally, the show features unseen stories created by notable people like Awkwafina; Garth Ennis; Eliot and Ilana Glazer; Canadians Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen; Simon Racioppa, Justin Roiland and Ben Bayouth; and Andy Samberg and Aisha Tyler.

The Boys is based on the New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, and is developed by executive producer and showrunner Eric Kripke. Season 3 of the series premieres on June 3rd.

Amazon Prime is priced at $79 per year with a 30-day trial period. The trial isn’t available for those in Quebec, but Prime Video costs $79 for a 13-month subscription, giving you one extra month for the same price.

Amazon reveals ‘The Boys’ season 3 premieres on June 3rd

Amazon has confirmed that the third season of The Boys will stream on Amazon Prime Video on June 3rd, with new episodes releasing every Friday.

Based on the brief snippet shown during Seven on 7 with Cameron Coleman, a meta tie-in TV show related to The Boys, Season 3 seems set to continue to follow the dysfunctional corporate-run conglomerate that is the Seven. Towards the end of the clip, Homelander (Antony Starr) and Starlight (Erin Moriarty) seem to be struggling to keep up their typically sunny dispositions.

As far as superhero-related TV shows/movies go, The Boys is one of the few that really appeals to me. I’ve always found it difficult to engage in most Marvel/DC television shows and movies because from my perspective, they often don’t feel like they’re grounded in reality. The Boys, however, totally is in several ways that I won’t go into due to spoilers.

Take it from someone who often decries that they “hate superhero stuff,” The Boys is worth watching.

The first two seasons of The Boys are available to stream on Prime Video.

An Amazon Prime Video subscription is included at no additional cost with an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $79/year.
