Guillermo Del Toro to Direct The Hobbit

After months of speculation, Variety announced that Guillermo Del Toro is going to sign a contract to direct the next two Hobbit films.

The announcement was made this week by executive producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, the president of New Line, Toby Emmirich, and MGM’s president, Mary Parent.

After having completed Hellboy2, the Mexican filmmaker will be spending the next four years in New Zealand to work with Peter Jackson and his team. The two films will be shot at the same time, just like the trilogy The Lord of the Rings.

60 years separates the story of The Hobbit and the first film of the trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring.

New Zealand is becoming the new Middle Earth. This time, the adventure of Bilbo Baggins unfolds as he takes the mystical ring to Gollum.

The cast has not yet been chosen, but we know that Ian McKellen is eager to resume his role as Gandalf.

Guillermo del Toro May Direct The Hobbit

According to The Hollywood Reporter, del Toro is negotiating with the two studios to be able to direct the film adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien novel.  This director has a great track record with science-fiction movies such as Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, Blade 2 and The Devil’s Backbone.

New Zealand producer and director, Peter Jackson, turned down The Hobbit since he is very busy with other projects such as The Lovely Bones and Tintin.  He will instead act as a producer of the movie.

A screenwriter has not been named since the strike of the Writer’s Guild is persisting.  The producers plan to start filming in 2009, so that the first movie is out for 2010, and a sequel will follow the year after.

Will Peter Jackson Be in The Hobbit?

During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the founder of the company, Bob Shaye commented, "Yes, that’s a fair statement. Notwithstanding our personal quarrels, I really respect and admire Peter and would love for him to be creatively involved in some way in ‘The Hobbit.’"

New Line is anxious to start moving with the movie The Hobbit, and this means making amends with Peter Jackson.  The company still owes Peter Jackson money from the first two films.

Shaye explained, "Peter and Fran have always wanted to ‘The Hobbit’ but whether that happens is yet to be decided."

Ian McKellan has also stated that the discussions between Jackson and New Line Cinema, and his partner Fran Walsh, must be resolved before he takes the part of Gandalf in The Hobbit.

The Hobbit Proposed to Sam Raimi

According to the website TheOneRing, Sam Raimi, director of the Spider-Man films, may take Peter Jackson’s place to direct The Hobbit.

This information was revealed a few days after Jackson (The Lord of the Rings), confirmed that he would not be continuing with this production following a dispute with New Line Cinema in regards to The Fellowship of the Ring.

Although this offer may seem interesting, in order for Raimi to accept, he would have to give up Spider-Man, which he is currently working on Spider-Man 4.
