Elon Musk bashes Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings, feels threatened by female character

Elon Musk is not a fan of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The controversial Tesla CEO took to Twitter on Labour Day to slam the buzzworthy Prime Video series, claiming that creator J.R.R. Tolkien is “turning in his grave” over it.

“Almost every male character so far is a coward, a jerk or both. Only Galadriel is brave, smart and nice,” tweeted Musk.

He’s referring to the Elven warrior played by Morfyyd Clark, who some have taken issue with for being a tough warrior. In Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, set thousands of years later, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) is portrayed as a more regal and serene character.

It should be noted, though, that only two episodes of The Rings of Power‘s eight-episode first season have been released so far, and Amazon is planning at least four more seasons. Therefore, it’s quite premature to already be getting upset about the show’s depiction of characters.

In recent years, Musk has also leaned into his edgelord “anti-woke” persona, so it’s not entirely surprising that a powerful female character would bother him so much. It’s also unclear how much of Musk’s comments are driven by his feud with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, whose Blue Origin spaceflight company is a direct competitor to Musk’s own Space X. Musk is so juvenile as to wrongfully call a man a pedophile over a wounded ego, so it certainly doesn’t seem like it would be beneath him to also insult The Rings of Power to slight Bezos.

Musk isn’t the only one who’s taken umbrage over The Rings of Power. Over the past week, people have been review bombing the series, largely due to racist backlash over people of colour among the cast. This has led Amazon to add a 72-hour delay on Prime Video user reviews.

Of course, there are completely valid reasons to dislike anything, The Rings of Power included, but people like Musk certainly don’t seem to have any. As beloved The Sandman writer Neil Gaiman tweeted in response to all of this, “Elon Musk doesn’t come to me for advice on how to fail to buy Twitter, and I don’t go to him for film, TV or literature criticism.”

Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series will have a two-episode premiere

Amazon has announced that two episodes of its The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series will be available when the series premieres on Prime Video on September 1st at 6pm PT/9pm ET.

While many Prime Video series drop all of their episodes at once, the eight-episode first season of The Rings of Power will get one new episode every week. Amazon has committed more than $1 billion USD (about $1.28 billion CAD) to five seasons of the J.R.R. Tolkien-adapted fantasy series, which would make it the most expensive television production to date.

Clearly, then, Amazon is banking heavily on the series. However, it’s not related at all to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings saga and is instead set thousands of years before the events of those films. Instead, it draws from Tolkien’s Appendices and covers all of the major events of Middle-earth’s Second Age, including the forging of the Rings of Power and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron.

It’s worth noting that Amazon’s decision to debut two episodes of The Rings of Power on September 1st means that the show’s first season will wrap on October 14th, well before HBO’s House of the Dragon has its finale on October 23rd. The Game of Thrones prequel premieres on Crave in Canada on Sunday, August 21st.

Amazon finally redesigns Prime Video’s interface, includes new menu options, lists and more

Amazon is rolling out a new user interface for Prime Video. At long last, it seems the tech giant aims to clean up the interface and provide a better experience for Prime Video subscribers.

Prime Video offers an extensive library. However, Amazon mixes much of the included catalogue of shows and movies with content that requires additional payments or subscriptions. It often becomes difficult to find a movie offered through Prime Video versus one available via premium video-on-demand (PVOD).

With this in mind, Amazon is rolling out a new user interface to help solve this issue. Subscribers of the service will begin to see a newly redesigned experience on their devices. The rollout starts with Fire TV sticks and Android phones. Following the successful release on the aforementioned devices, the new interface will arrive on desktop and iOS.

It appears as though Amazon is taking a page out of the book of Netflix. The redesigned Prime Video app will soon offer a more simplified side menu. This will include options to navigate between Home, Store, Find, Live TV, Free with Ads and My Stuff pages. Each provides its own catalogue of content.

For instance, if you’re hoping to rent Spider-Man: No Way Home, you’d merely have to navigate to the Store page and purchase the rental. Alternatively, once The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power is available, it can be found via the Prime Amazon Originals sub-menu on the Home page.

A big part of this new change is to help identify which piece of content is available via the Prime Video subscription and what isn’t. Pieces of content such as The Terminal List, another Amazon Original, have a blue checkmark next to them. Shows, movies, etc. that are available to rent or buy will have a shopping bag icon next to them.

Plus, Amazon is including a Top 10 Chart, mimicking Netflix. This will showcase the top 10 ranked titles at the time. Much like Netflix, this list will likely rotate each week, though that remains unclear.

Overall, this should help clean up the matter of what is included with a Prime Video subscription and what comes as an add-on or additional purchase. With live channel bundles like StackTV and AMC+ on top of PVOD purchases available, a Prime Video UI refresh was long overdue.

Amazon has not clarified when the desktop and iOS updates are due to arrive. Additionally, it’s not clear whether native smart TV apps will be updated.

Amazon debuts new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Amazon has released a brand new look at The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power ahead of its debut on September 2nd. The new teaser gives us more time to explore the diverse settings, characters, and an ominous threat looming over them.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In classic fashion to the IP, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power feature an ensemble cast.

The teaser trailer only runs for two minutes, 30-seconds. Yet, we see a few familiar characters. The bulk of the teaser features Galadriel, a royal elf. She speaks to Elrond with claims that the “enemy is still out there.” The series is expected to dive into the rise of Sauron and the creation of the rings.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been building a lot of anticipation. Amazon has reportedly spent an estimated $1 billion USD and is planning five seasons of the TV series. The company even won the rights in a $250 million payout. Adding in the development and production of it all, the series could be one of the most expensive shows produced.

The series stars Nazanin Boniadi, Benjamin Walker, Morfydd Clark, Peter Mullan, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, and Ismael Cruz Cordova. Its creative team includes Patrick McKay and John D. Payne.

Season one of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is comprised of eight episodes. The season unfolds weekly beginning on September 2nd and concludes October 21st, 2022.
