The Simpsons’ latest couch gag is an homage to Google Chrome’s Dinosaur Game

The Season 34 premiere of The Simpsons on September 25th kicked off with a fun nod to Google Chrome’s Dinosaur Game.

In the intro, all five Simpsons family members appear as pixelated silhouettes and run in a 2D plane while jumping over cacti, just like in Google’s offline dino game. All the while, a chiptune version of Danny Elfman’s iconic The Simpsons theme can be heard. By the end of the gag, Bart, Lisa, Marge and Maggie successfully make it to the couch, while Homer runs into a cactus and yells “D’oh!”

Titled “Habeas Tortoise,” The Simpsons‘ 34th season premiere follows Homer as he finds himself publicly humiliated once again and seeks refuge in an online group looking for a missing tortoise, only to discover something much darker.

The first 33 seasons of the animated sitcom are currently streaming on Disney+ Canada.

Smithers to come out?

Waylon Smithers will come out to Mr. Burns on the new series of ‘The Simpsons’.

The power plant employee’s affections for his boss are well known to viewers of the show, and season 27 of the animated comedy will see him take his feelings a step further.

Executive producer Al Jean explained to TV Line: ”In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t.

”We deal with that in two episodes… We actually do a lot with Smithers this year; he gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.”

Season 27 will also see Marge Simpson arrested after she allows son Bart to play alone in the park.

Al explained: ”Marge lets Bart go to the park alone because he’s too irritating, then she ends up getting arrested.

”I read a column by Mitch Albom, the writer of Tuesdays with Morrie, about a mother who was arrested for letting her son play in the park while she had to work. Albom was saying, ‘When did it become illegal to let your kids play in the park when they’re 10? When did kids have to be on a leash every minute?’ So that’s the basis of our story.”

Elsewhere in the new series, Apu will fall out with his brother Sanjay, resulting in Sanjay’s nephew Jamshed taking over the Kwik-E-Mart.

Al said: ”Jamshed is 100 percent American. He doesn’t speak like Apu and even disrespects his way of speaking.”

Harry Shearer leaves The Simpsons

Harry Shearer has left ‘The Simpsons’.

The 71-year-old comic actor, who voices the characters Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders and Principle Skinner, is walking away from the animated TV show after 26 seasons.

Shearer has suggested his departure has been caused by a contract dispute with bosses.

Revealing that the lawyer for ‘The Simpsons’ producer James L. Brooks had delivered the news he was off the series, Shearer posted on Twitter: ”From James L. Brooks’ lawyer: ”show will go on, Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best.”. (1/2) … This because I wanted what we’ve always had: the freedom to do other work. Of course, I wish him the very best. (2/2) (sic)”

Following his tweets, the comedian was inundated with messages of support.

He tweeted: ”Thanks, Simpsons fans, for your support.”

Fox recently renewed the show for two more series taking it through to 2017 with the rest of the voice cast – which includes Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith and Hank Azaria – signing on for the new episodes, but Shearer did not.

TMZ had reported that Shearer refused to put pen to a new contract due to unresolved merchandising issues.

Production on Season 27 has already begun without Shearer – who has starred in numerous movies including spoof documentary ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ and ‘The Truman Show’ – and it is not yet known who will replace him as the voice of his characters.

The Simpsons facing cancellation?

The Simpsons could be facing cancellation due to a wage dispute between 20th Century Fox Television and the six main actors who voice the cartoon characters: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer, reports the Daily Beast.

The dispute began when 20th Century Fox Television executives insisted that the cast must accept a 45 percent pay cut or The Simpsons will be cancelled.

Each main cast member earns about $8 million for 22 weeks of work, and has offered to reduce salary by 30 percent in exchange for a small percentage of profits from the back-end profits, which none of them has ever before received.

“Fox is taking the position that unless they can cut the production costs really drastically, they’ll pull the plug on new shows,” said a Simpsons insider. “The show has made billions in profits over the years and will continue to do so as far as the eye can see down the road. The actors are willing to take a pay cut of roughly a third, but that’s not good enough for Fox.”

A spokesman for Fox Television has confirmed that the series created by Matt Groening and James L. Brooks cannot continue under the “current financial model,” and issued a statement that they are “hopeful we can reach an agreement with the voice cast.”

Another plagiarism accusation for Usher

R&B singer Usher, 32, has been accused by radio DJs in Mississippi of stealing from The Simpsons animated TV show, according to Starpulse.

The DJs say there are strong similarities between the song OMG, Usher’s collaboration with will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, and a Christmas carol sung by the Homer Simpson character in a 2003 episode of the series.

Mississippi radio DJs have mixed the two song videos together and posted the results on YouTube, asking fans to compare the two and decide for themselves whether Justin Bieber’s mentor has plagiarized The Simpsons song.

Last month, Usher, 32, was involved in a trial where he was accused of plagiarism with Alicia Keys. Wadena Pyatt, an aspiring singer, accused the two stars of having stolen the song Caught Up.

Katy Perry dates Moe from The Simpsons

 

It appears that Katy Perry is not too sexy for The Simpsons. The singer will appear in a special live action segment featuring Simpsons puppets that was filmed before her plunging neckline got her into trouble with parents across the country.

Last week, a preview of her kids’ show released on YouTube received a flood of complaints from concerned parents about a very low cut dress the singer chose to wear for the G-rated audience.

And while Sesame Street axed the singer’s segment, Springfield has sent the welcome wagon for the pop star and her wardrobe, reports the Daily News.

"In the wake of Elmo’s terrible betrayal, the Simpsons puppets wish to announce they stand felt-shoulder-to-shoulder with Katy Perry," said Al Jean, executive producer of The Simpsons.

The I Kissed A Girl singer will appear in human form among Simpsons puppets, as Moe’s girlfriend, during a special live-action segment of the December 5 episode called The Fight Before Christmas.

Coldplay to Star on the Simpsons

The London musicians will be guest starring on an episode of The Simpsons, as confirmed by their spokesperson.

In the episode, when the Simpsons family patriarch, Homer, suddenly wins the lottery, he and his son, Bart, will hire Coldplay to give a private concert.

Over the course of the show’s past 21 years, several musical celebrities have guest starred on different Simpsons episodes. U2, Sting, Paul McCartney, Elton John, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Johnny Cash have each had their turn to participate on the show.

Coldplay’s appearance on The Simpsons will air on September 27.

Jodie Foster in The Simpsons

Actress Jodie Foster is going to be the voice behind Maggie, the youngest member of the Simpson family, for the episode, Four Great Women and a Manicure. Maggie will appear as an adult.

For the first time on the show, Maggie will be talking. Before, the only word Maggie said was "papa," which was recorded with Elizabeth Taylor’s voice.

The new episode for The Simpsons 20th season will debut in 2009.

Anne Hathaway is also going to be an all-new voice behind Bart’s love interest in the episode entitled, The Good, the Sad and the Drugly.

Several other stars have offered their voices to the long-running animated series including Britney Spears, Danny DeVito, Paul McCartney and Christina Ricci.

A Compilation Disc for The Simpsons

Fans of The Simpsons will be able to purchase the 41-song collection this fall, which features songs from the past nine seasons of the show.

The disc, entitled The Simpsons: Testify – A Whole Lot More Original Music From the Television Series, will be in stores on September 18, and has been produced with the help of Shout! Factory.

The release of the disc coincides with the beginning of the 19th season of the Fox series.  Certain songs on the disc were performed by the show’s characters.  Here is a list of the songs that will be included:

FOX is revealing the third trailer this month for the highly anticipated animated feature film.

The movie, which takes Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa and Maggie Simpson to the silver screen, will open in theatres next July.
