Titanic artifacts on display in England

A new exhibit arrives in London next month featuring 14 new artifacts from the Titanic, the ill-fated ocean liner memorialized in the popular movie starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

On November 5, Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition opens at the 02 Arena in London, England, and focuses on the human stories behind the ship’s 1912 collision with an iceberg that killed 1,517 people.

The exhibit includes video footage from the site of the wreck, which was finally located 73 years later, several hundred miles off the coast of Newfoundland, in 1985.

Of the 300 items recovered from the wreckage, such as the pocket watch of a wealthy passenger, perfume bottles from the era, postcards, sheet music, and stamps, the exhibit will also unveil 14 new finds.

In its time, Titanic was the world’s largest passenger steamship with state-of-the- construction considered to be unsinkable. The news of its collision with an iceberg and eventual sinking just four days into its maiden voyage shocked the world.

Visitors will receive a replica boarding pass and can check the memorial wall to see if their passenger survived or perished. The exhibition runs from November 5, 2010 until May 1, 2011.

A new museum dedicated to the Titanic is all the rage

Open for just one month in Pigeon, Tennessee, the Titanic – World’s Largest Museum Attraction cannot meet the demand and has been selling out since its inauguration.

It must be said that the museum, the second of its kind after one in Branson, Missouri, is impressive. It is housed inside a scale model of the ship which entered the annals of history  after sinking on its maiden voyage in 1912. It is a scale model but still several storeys high.

It contains a host of impressive reconstructions of many parts of the Titanic, from the captain’s post to a first-class room as well as a third-class room, large wooden steps and even a part of the engine room. The Titanic Museum is the closest experience people can have to what real Titanic passengers saw when they boarded her nearly 100 years ago.

There’s a poignant moment during the visit when visitors can pass through an area commemorating the 1,520 victims of the shipwreck that occurred on the night of April 14, 1912, off the coast of Newfoundland.

It is recommended to reserve your entry tickets to the museum in advance in order to avoid arriving to a closed and sold-out ticket booth.

Titanic in 3D

James Cameron has speculated before about re-releasing his mega-hit Titanic in 3D. Now he confirms it is going to happen.

In an interview with USA Today, the director mentions that he plans to re-release the film with the same technology he used for Avatar. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

The director says, "We’re targeting spring of 2012 for the release [of a 3D version of Titanic], which is the 100 year anniversary of the sailing of the ship."

His film Avatar is still playing on the big screen and will come back to theatres at the end of the summer or in the fall in an extended version.

Cameron has some 40 minutes of cut scenes to work with. He could add 10 more minutes to the current film. The maximum length an IMAX film can be is 170 minutes and Avatar already clocks in at 160.

Avatar was knocked out of the #1 spot at the box office when Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland was released.

Rumour has it that an Avatar DVD will be released on April 22 but nothing has been confirmed. The 30 minutes Cameron has in reserve could end up on the DVD version of the film.

James Cameron will next direct the action-sci-fi film Battle Angel in 2011. The cast has not been confirmed.

Avatar on the verge of dethroning Titanic

Starpulse reports that the film Avatar is still dominating the box office, earning $36 million American this past weekend.

Today (January 25), the film by director James Cameron should overtake the previous world box office record set by Titanic, a film by the same director.

Since being released in 1997, no-one has been able to beat Titanic‘s $1.843 billion worldwide gross.

James Cameron should do that now with Avatar, which is expected to finish its run at more than $2 billion. Revenue for the film, also presented in 3D, reached $1.84 billion this past weekend, only $2 million short of Titanic.

Avatar was a victim of its own success in China when authorities decided to pull the film off screens to make room for domestic productions.

At the Golden Globe Awards, Avatar won Best Motion Picture – Drama and James Cameron won Best Director.

Commemorative Cruise For 100th Anniversary Of Titanic

To mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, a commemorative cruise will follow the same route as the famous ship on April 8, 2012, the same day the fatal cruise departed in 1912.

Starting from Southampton, England, the ship called the Balmoral, which holds 1 350 passengers, will travel to the exact point where the tragedy occurred and a ceremony will take place at 11:40 pm on April 14 to 2:20 am on April 15, the exact length of time it took for the Titanic to sink.

The ship will then travel to Halifax, where passengers can visit three cemeteries where most of the victims from the Titanic are buried. They will then travel to New York, the expected destination 100 years ago.

During the trip, passengers can enjoy readings by historians, enjoy the same menu that was served and listen to music from that era.

The Boston Overseas Company (www.bortonoverseas.com) is now taking reservations for this historic cruise.

Titanic Generosity

Winslet and DiCaprio donated 30,000 dollars to 98-year-old Millvina Dean, the last remaining survivor of the Titanic.

The two stars, who played the famous couple in the James Cameron film Titanic, have given the money to a fund to help her remain in a nursing home, Access Hollywood has learned.

Photographer Don Mullan initially released an ad in the Irish Independent newspaper to raise funds for Ms. Dean and then decided to contact Winslet, DiCaprio and Cameron to inform them of her financial situation.

There were rumors that Mullan was also hoping Céline Dion, the singer of My Heart Will Go On, would have the same gesture as the two main stars of Titanic and help Ms. Dean.

New Releases of Titanic on DVD

The new DVDs will be available as a 2-disc special edition, or a 4-disc collector’s edition, and both will include many new bonus materials.

The producers announced that the new releases will allow fans of the film, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, a first look at plenty of previously unseen footage.

Canadian filmmaker, James Cameron, won 11 Oscars for Titanic in 1998.  The movie remains today the most lucrative film in the history of cinema.
