Tom Hanks wants to play trivia games with you on Apple Arcade

Tom Hanks is launching his first-ever video game exclusively on Apple Arcade.

Developed by the U.K.’s Blueline Studios, Hanx101 is a trivia game in which the Oscar-winning actor serves as narrator. Altogether, Hanx101 features some 58,000 questions covering a variety of topics, including science, technology, history, geography, art and food.

Hanx101 will launch on Apple Arcade on September 2nd. An Apple Arcade subscription costs $5.99 CAD/month.

While it might seem odd for Hanks to partner with Apple on his first game, Hanx101 marks the third collaboration between the actor and the tech giant. 2020’s Greyhound, a war film written by and starring Hanks, was released directly on Apple TV+ amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The following year, Hanks starred in the post-apocalyptic survival film Finch, which also premiered exclusively on Apple TV+.

Meryl Streep ‘honoured’ by Oscars nomination

Meryl Streep is "honoured beyond measure" at receiving her 21st Oscar nomination.

The 68-year-old actress broke her own record as the most nominated performer of all time when the nominations for the 2018 awards ceremony were announced on Tuesday (23.01.18), as she bagged her 21st nod for her role as publisher Katharine Graham in ‘The Post’.

Speaking about her nomination for Best Actress, the star said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times: "I am honoured beyond measure by this nomination for a film I love, a film that stands in defence of press freedom, and inclusion of women’s voices in the movement of history. Proud of the film, and all her filmmakers. Thank you from a full heart."

Meryl’s 21st nod puts her nine nominations ahead of Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson, who have each earned 12 nods throughout their careers.

Despite Meryl’s nomination, her co-star Tom Hanks was snubs by the shortlists, marking the 18th year in which he has failed to find himself nominated for an Academy Award.

Meanwhile, Meryl recently admitted she was "shocked" at Tom’s continued snub by the Academy, as she hoped things would change for this year’s ceremony.

Speaking before the nominations were revealed, she said: "That he hasn’t been nominated in 17 years, I’m actually shocked, because the work we’ve seen is at such a consistently high level. And this role [in The Post] of Ben Bradlee, in particular, has a dynamism. Tom steps outside of anything we’ve seen before."

Elsewhere in the nominations announcement – which was delivered by Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis following an announcement by Academy president John Bailey – ‘The Shape of Water’ managed to pick up an impressive 13 nods in total.

For this year’s ceremony, Jimmy Kimmel is returning to host the Academy Awards which are set to take place at the Dolby Theatre, in Hollywood, on Sunday March 4.

Steven Spielberg had ‘inappropriate behaviour’ in his own company

Steven Spielberg once had a case of "inappropriate behaviour" in his own company.

The 71-year-old award-winning filmmaker has helmed more than 60 movies during his career – including blockbusters such as ‘Jaws’ and the ‘Indiana Jones’ franchise – but Spielberg has revealed he had a case of sexual misconduct in his own company, which is now run by women.

Spielberg told the Guardian newspaper: "There was some inappropriate behaviour years and years ago inside my own company, which we dealt with and dismissed the person involved in that.

"But I’ve always had small companies with no more than 70 employees, and my companies have always been run by women.

"I find when companies are run by women, there’s less of a chance for men to get away with that kind of behaviour."

Spielberg also admitted that he knew the disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was a "bully".

However, the acclaimed director only learned about the sexual misconduct allegations facing Weinstein after the story broke.

He said: "I knew that he was a bully, and I knew that he was a very intimidating competitor. But I learned for the first time about sexual proclivities when I read the story by Ronan Farrow.

"I didn’t know because the sexual assault tsunami hadn’t happened yet. Of course it had been happening for decades and decades, but this particular 8.2 earthquake had not yet occurred.

"[I was] certainly aware of the existence probably all the way back to William Shakespeare’s time of the casting couch, and the prevalence of sexual abuse and sexual intimidation in the Hollywood of the 1920s, 30s and 40s."

Meanwhile, Spielberg recently backed Oprah Winfrey to become America’s next president.

Oprah delivered a rallying speech about sexual harassment during this year’s Golden Globes, and Spielberg subsequently suggested she should run for political office.

He said: "I think Oprah Winfrey would make an absolutely brilliant president. If she declares, I will back her.

"She’s been on the air for 35 years with all kinds of social outreach, building bridges between different ideologies and different points of view."

Tom Hanks’ martini stress

Tom Hanks has claimed carrying a tray of martinis at the Golden Globe awards on Sunday (07.01.18) was the most stressful moment of his life.

The 61-year-old actor was spotted playing the waiter whilst at the glitzy award ceremony over the weekend when he carried a tray of four alcoholic beverages over to the table where his ‘The Post’ co-star Meryl Streep and director Steven Spielberg were sitting.

And whilst the star has no doubt felt nervous in his profession, he claims he had "never been more nervous" than he was in that moment, as he was terrified of dropping the drinks.

Speaking during an appearance on ‘The Ellen Degeneres Show’ on Tuesday (09.01.18) alongside Meryl, he said: "I was at a table. [Meryl] is on antibiotics because she’s getting over the flu so she couldn’t have one. But I was at a table where somebody who I love very much told me to ‘Go get martinis!’. So what I did was, coming down … it was like I was one of those truckers on mountain roads with a load full of nitroglycerin. I had never been more nervous carrying something through a crowded room."

During his appearance on the talk show, Tom also praised Oprah Winfrey on her moving speech, where she addressed the sexual harassment claims circling Hollywood and called on everyone to help push toward a better future.

The ‘Sully’ actor previously urged men to "pipe down" and allow women "to be heard" in the wake of the ongoing scandal, specifically in regards to the multiple women who have come forward to accuse disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment.

Tom said: "We’re at a watershed moment, this is a sea change. His last name will become a noun and a verb. It will become an identifying moniker for a state of being for which there was a before and an after.

"There is going to be, righteously, a pause in the discussion for the women to be heard. Perhaps all men, myself included, should pipe down and not try to explain it or comment on it or certainly not try to defend it or even prosecute it because every one of those women, those 40 women I was in the room with, 100 percent of them need to be listened to."

Milo Ventimiglia is a feminist

Milo Ventimiglia felt it was important as a "good man" to be a part of the Time’s Up initiative at the Golden Globe awards.

The 40-year-old actor considers himself a "feminist" and so wore all black to the ceremony on Sunday (07.01.18) in solidarity with the actresses who were doing so to lend their support to the anti-harassment campaign.

s men proudly stood next to the dozens of women who sent a strong message in their all-black ensembles at the 75th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday.

Speaking alongside his ‘This Is Us’ co-star Justin Hartley, he told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: "I’m first and foremost a feminist. I have been my entire life. I have two amazing older sisters, an amazing mother and a father that supports all of us and all of them.

"Being a man of this industry and doing my best and even our best to even be good men — I can speak for this man, he is a good man — to support women in this industry and across the board in all industries."

Discussing wearing black to the event, he added: "It’s one of those things you hear about and you immediately go, ‘Yes, of course’."

And Milo would willingly don no other colour for the rest of his life if it helped tackle the "very, very horrible problem" of sexual misconduct and inequality.

He said: "A spotlight has been shined on a very, very horrible problem and injustice to women in general.

"Hopefully we can stand up. If I have to wear black for 365 days of the year, I would for the rest of my life."

Fellow ‘This Is Us’ star Chris Sullivan also wore black, including dark nail polish, to the event, but only after taking advice from co-star Chrissy Metz and his wife, Rachel Reichard, on how it would be most appropriate for him to support the campaign.

He said: "When I heard about this movement, I called Chrissy first to ask her how she would like to discuss this topic. What she would like to put forward as far as the conversation goes, specifically for tonight.

"It was important for me to, I asked my wife. I said, ‘How do you feel about this conversation. Where do you think this conversation should go because I am not the demographic that should be controlling this conversation. I am the demographic that should be supporting this conversation’

"So I look to the women in my life to ask them what they need to feel safe and to feel heard and to feel empowered and that’s how I prepared for this evening."

Meanwhile, former ‘Glee’ actor Darren Criss felt it was important to be "in solidarity with our sisters" at the event.

He said: "The women — not only in Hollywood, but in several industries and communities around the world — have been outspoken and have shown their strength in great numbers.

"And I think it also takes a great deal of men to step up and show their solidarity, and voice their outrage, and make sure that their voices are heard as well. We’re all in solidarity with our sisters, in arms so to speak. So that’s why, that’s what this pin is for. It’s He For She, which is a campaign from UN Women. So that’s my little sign of solidarity with all the ladies here tonight."

Edgar Ramirez also wore a He For She pin alongside his Time’s Up button.

And a host of actors wore the Time’s Up badges, including Justin Timberlake, Ewan McGregor, Nick Jonas, Joseph Fiennes, Aziz Ansari, Tom Hanks and Timothee Chalamet on their dark suits to signify their support for the initiative.

Tom Hanks describes Steven Spielberg as a ‘guerrilla filmmaker’

Tom Hanks has described Steven Spielberg as a "guerrilla filmmaker".

The Oscar-winning actor has previously worked under the helm of the director in ‘Saving Private Ryan’, ‘Catch Me If You Can’ and ‘The Terminal’, as well as producing several projects together, and has now teamed up with the 70-year-old moviemaker again on ‘The Post’, and likes the spontaneous way he works.

Speaking on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ about Spielberg, Tom said: "He just wants to figure it out as he goes along. He’s almost like a guerrilla filmmaker. He has the set, he has the space and he wants to fill it with something he hasn’t imagined before. I don’t mean to [say] that he’s not prepared — he’s the most prepared man in the world."

But the 61-year-old actor’s co-star Meryl Streep – who portrays Kay Graham in the movie – was "mad" he didn’t warn her about Spielberg’s directing method.

He added: "She [Meryl] was mad at me because I didn’t tell her Steven doesn’t rehearse."

Tom joked the ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ actress is "high maintenance", but then admitted he had actually found it "scary" how down to earth she was on the set.

He quipped: "Can I just say, ‘High maintenance Meryl Streep?’ Look, the shoes alone, man. No, I am so joking.

"You know what’s scary about Meryl? She comes in and does it just like everybody else does. You’re expecting French horns before she enters the stage.

"You expect a guy in livery to come out: ‘Ladies and gentlemen, the actress known as Meryl Streep.’ And she comes in and waves to the crew the way the royals used to."

Tom Hanks discusses how to treat the work of Hollywood ‘abusers’

Tom Hanks has called for patience before judging the work of alleged Hollywood abusers.

The 61-year-old actor thinks "Netflix would go out of business" if the industry decided to throw out every TV show or movie that was made by someone who had been accused of sexual misconduct – but Tom has called for a patient, considered approach to the issue.

He explained to the New York Post newspaper’s Page Six column: "If you threw out every film or TV show that was made by an a**hole, Netflix would go out of business. I think you do just have … to wait because this is a long game."

The Academy Award-winning star admitted it’s difficult to separate the art from the artist.

But he also claimed that there are some historic parallels to the current situation.

Tom reflected: "Picasso was a womanizer, this is not excusing anybody. You just have to wait and see how it settles over the long haul. This is not a sprint, this is a marathon.

"I think work does speak for itself, but character does come into the conversation at some point, but I think that lands over time."

The issue was thrust firmly into the spotlight earlier this year, following a string of accusations made against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

Since then, a series of big name industry figures have been accused of serious sexual misconduct, prompting claims that such behaviour is rife within Hollywood circles.

Meryl Streep – who has previously spoken out against Weinstein – has compared the industry’s dilemma to William Shakespeare.

She shared: "We still revere Shakespeare.

"I mean we haven’t thrown [‘The Merchant of Venice’] out and there is no question that that play is antisemitic. There’s no question that ‘The Taming of The Shrew’ is misogynist.

"Everybody has their blank spots, but the genius that understands about the human experiment is worth safeguarding and shouldn’t be touched."

Tom Hanks isn’t surprised by Hollywood scandal

Tom Hanks believes "predators are absolutely everywhere" within Hollywood.

The 61-year-old actor has admitted he isn’t surprised by the scandals emerging involving the likes of Harvey Weinstein – who allegedly sexually harassed over 80 women in a 30-year period – and Kevin Spacey, who stands accused of similar misconduct toward several males, because he thinks "predators" are rife in the entertainment industry.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter as part of their Actor’s Roundtable, the ‘Forrest Gump’ actor said: "There’s a lot of reasons people do this for a living. Making a movie is a life experience that can create an awful lot of joy. You can meet the person you fall in love with, you can laugh your heads off. That’s the good stuff.

"The bad stuff can happen on a movie as well. There are some people who go into this business because they get off on having power. And the times they feel the most powerful, which is why they went into the business, are when they are hitting on somebody who’s underneath them, [and] I don’t necessarily mean completely sexually. There are predators absolutely everywhere."

The ‘Saving Private Ryan’ star is optimistic for the future, however, as he insists it’s "never too late" to change behaviours and make Hollywood a safer place.

He added: "Somebody said, ‘Is it too late to change things?’ No, it’s never too late. It’s never too late to learn new behaviours. And that’s a responsibility of anybody who wants to obey a code of professional ethics."

In response to the allegations against Weinstein, the producer has been stripped of many of his accolades – including being ousted from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – and has been fired from his position as co-chairman of The Weinstein Company.

Spacey, 58, on the other hand, has had his hit Netflix series ‘House of Cards’ cancelled, as well as being fired from his role in Sir Ridley Scott movie ‘All the Money in the World’.

Following the misconduct allegations surrounding 65-year-old Weinstein, Hollywood stars including Brett Ratner, Louis C.K., and Jeremy Piven have also been accused of abusing their position of power.

Most recently, Matt Lauer was fired from his position as host of the ‘Today’ show after there was a "detailed complaint by a colleague", who accused Lauer of behaving inappropriately.

Joan Rivers’ private letters published in new book

Joan Rivers wrote to Kathy Bates to console her after the actress was offended by one of her jokes.

The notoriously bitchy comedian – who died in 2014 at the age of 81 after suffering a heart attack during a routine medical procedure – rarely apologized for her acid tongue.

But fans will see a softer side to her in new book ‘Joan Rivers Confidential’, according to The New York Post newspaper.

The autobiography – written by Joan’s daughter Melissa Rivers and friend-and-publicist Scott Currie – will feature private letters belonging to the ‘Fashion Police’ star, sent by the likes of Meryl Streep.

One of the notes to be made public in the book was written by Joan to ‘American Horror Story’ star Kathy, after she was upset by the comic’s joke that the movie version of the ‘Titanic’ wouldn’t have sunk if Kathy had not been onboard.

Joan wrote to Kathy: "The fact that people even know our names is a gift from God so relax, enjoy your fame and SMILE.

"Please know that I am a loyal, devoted, longtime fan of yours. (P.S. I also took your side in ‘Misery.’) Love and Kisses, Joan XOXO. (sic)"

Meryl Streep and other celebrities including Tom Hanks, David Letterman and Bo Derek have also given permission for their private letters to Joan to be published.

Meryl wrote: "Stephen Hawking and I could do a show about black holes, and then, I could disappear into one, a star collapsing in upon itself until it becomes at once invisible and incomparably dense."

Joan’s most catty comments will be celebrated in the book, including her joke about Jennifer Aniston: "Even if she does become pregnant, Angelina [Jolie] will get the baby."

Tom Hanks slams Harvey Weinstein

Tom Hanks thinks Harvey Weinstein is an "ass".

The 61-year-old actor has blasted the disgraced movie mogul – who has been the subject of a damning expose in the New York Times and hit by multiple accusations of sexual misconduct by the likes of Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan, Kate Beckinsale and Cara Delevingne – and insisted being "rich and famous and powerful" was no excuse.

He said: "Just because you’re rich and famous and powerful doesn’t mean you aren’t in some ways a big fat ass. Excuse me, take away ‘fat.’

"But I’m not, you know, I’m not the first person to say Harvey’s a bit of an ass.

"Poor Harvey — I’m not going to say poor Harvey, Jesus. Isn’t it kind of amazing that it took this long? I’m reading it and I’m thinking ‘You can’t do that to Ashley Judd! Hey, I like her. Don’t do that. That ain’t fair. Not her, come on. Come on!’ "

And the ‘Sully’ star also hit out at the 65-year-old producer, who previously cited his upbringing in the 60s and 70s when there was a different office "culture", when discussing the allegations.

Tom grew up around the same time so insisted that was a poor explanation.

Speaking to the New York Times newspaper, he said: "I’ve never worked with Harvey. But, aah, it all just sort of fits, doesn’t it?

"Isn’t it part and parcel to all of society somehow, that people in power get away with this? Look, I don’t want to rag on Harvey but so obviously something went down there. "You can’t buy, ‘Oh, well I grew up in the ’60s and ’70s and so therefore…’ I did, too.

"So I think it’s like, well, what do you want from this position of power? I know all kinds of people that just love hitting on, or making the lives of underlings some degree of miserable, because they can.

"Somebody great said this, either Winston Churchill, Immanuel Kant or Oprah: ‘When you become rich and powerful, you become more of what you already are.’ So I would say, there’s an example of how that’s true."

In the wake of the scandal, Weinstein is believed to have checked into rehab in Arizona, has split from his wife Georgina Chapman and been sacked from his own Weinstein Company, while he has also been slammed by big names in Hollywood, including Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, and Dame Judi Dench.
