Star-studded US telethon raises $15m for hurricane relief

A star-studded telethon has raised more than $15 million for Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma relief.

George Clooney, Justin Bieber, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Lupita Nyong’o, and Oprah Winfrey were among the big names who appeared in the one-hour ‘Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief’ event, which was broadcast on the major US TV networks from New York, Los Angeles, Nashville and San Antonio.

Stevie Wonder opened the telethon with a performance of his hit ‘Lean on Me’ and several stars told emotional stories about those affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, which have destroyed parts of the US and Caribbean.

George and Julie recalled one true tale about a guy who kept up his sons’ spirits by playing the piano while the storm was hitting.

Beyonce – who was born in Houston, one of the areas hit hard by Harvey – pleaded with people to stick together in the wake of the horrific events.

In a video message, she said: "During a time where it’s impossible to watch the news without seeing violence or racism in this country, just when you think it couldn’t possibly get worse, natural disasters take precious life, do massive damage and forever change lives, leaving behind contaminated water, flooded hospitals, schools and nursing homes.

"Natural disasters don’t discriminate. They don’t see if you’re an immigrant, black or white, Hispanic or Asian, Jewish or Muslim, wealthy or poor. It doesn’t matter if you’re from Third Ward or River Oaks, we’re all in this together. Seeing everyone of different racial, social and religious backgrounds put their own lives at risk to help each other survive, restored my faith in humanity."

A number of big names worked on the phone banks at the event – the brainchild of rapper Bun B and Justin’s manager Scooter Braun – and many took to social media to talk about the telethon.

Nicki Minaj tweeted a group shot of many celebs involved, adding the caption: "Just got the word, over 15 MILLION was raised tonight. You guys are AMAZING!!!! Had such a good time speaking to all of you. #HandinHand (sic)"

Lupita tweeted a picture of herself and Bruce Willis, and wrote: "We’ve made $14 million thus far! Bruce Willis and I say thank you! @handinhandfund #handinhand (sic)"

She also posted a selfie alongside James Bond actor Daniel Craig, who was also working the phones.

She tweeted: "Call me!…or call Daniel Craig! 1-800-258-6000 #handinhand (sic)"

P.Diddy wrote: "Truly honored to be at #HandInHand supporting those affected by Hurricane Harvey and Irma. Call 1-800-258-6000 or text GIVE to 80777 NOW!!! (sic)"

Justin posted: "Call me

1 (800) 258-6000#HandInHand (sic)"

Usher, Demi Lovato, Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, George Strait, Chris Stapleton and Darius Rucker also performed at the event.

Emma Watson gushes over late Bill Paxton

Emma Watson has hailed the late Bill Paxton as a "wonderful" actor.

The 27-year-old actress plays the role of Mae Holland in the sci-fi film ‘The Circle’ and Emma has admitted starring alongside the ‘Twister’ actor – who died in February this year aged 61 after he suffered a stroke – was very special because the pair sparked up a "really personal relationship".

Speaking about Bill to ET Online at the premiere of the drama movie at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ star gushed: "It was wonderful working with him. It was a really personal relationship for me, so it’s not something I feel comfortable talking about … but he was wonderful."

And Emma has admitted she also enjoyed filming with fellow co-star Tom Hanks, who she has praised as a "funny and kind and generous" man.

Speaking about the 60-year-old movie legend, Emma said: "He’s funny and kind and generous to work with and very hard working and he’s all the things. He is all the things."

The brunette beauty also admitted she was surprised the ‘Philadelphia’ star lived up to his reputation of being down-to-Earth.

She explained: "You just think to yourself, ‘There’s no way this guy is gonna live up to his reputation.’ And then he does and it’s like, ‘What? Really?’"

This comes after Emma admitted she is "passionate about having a private identity".

The actress – who made her name in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies –

said she likes to keep her personal life separate from her work so she can keep an air of mystery about herself and "do her job well".

She explained: "It’s one of the things that I struggle with because of the three of us – Dan [Radcliffe], Rupert [Grint], and I – were kids when we got cast in this fairytale series, and what happened to us was kind of a fantasy story in itself. Outside of the movies. So the story of my life has been of public interest, which is why I’ve been so passionate about having a private identity."

Tom Hanks: I’m a cool grandparent

Tom Hanks thinks he’s a "cool" grandparent.

The 60-year-old actor – who has four children, Colin, 39 and Elizabeth, 34, with his late ex-wife Samantha Lewes, and Chet, 29, and Truman, 21, with his wife Rita Wilson – is grandfather to three children, and says the little ones keep him "entertained" when he is watching them.

He told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: "When you have grandkids, if you’re with one of them – or all three of them – look, there’s no book, no radio, no TV. You’re going to be entertained by them every moment that you’re there. Sit back and watch the show!"

Both the ‘Sully’ star and his spouse, also 60, believe they are fun grandparents to six-year-old Olivia and three-year-old Charlotte, whose father is Colin, as well as Chet’s unnamed baby daughter.

Rita said: "We’re the cool grandparents."

To which Tom added: "I think [we’re] the most cool."

Meanwhile, the ‘Forest Gump’ actor recently admitted his marriage to Rita doesn’t take "vast work", and although people think it is hard to maintain a relationship in the public eye, Tom doesn’t think it is much different as he and his wife complement one another very well.

He said: "People say, ‘Jeez, it must be hard to stay married in show business.

"I think it’s hard to stay married anywhere, but if you marry the right person, it might work out. We give each other a natural sense of support for whatever the other wants to pursue.

"Our marriage doesn’t require vast work. We have been married 28 years and dig each other a lot."

Tom Hanks and Amy Adams accidentally listed for Oscar

Tom Hanks and Amy Adams were accidentally among the nominees listed on the official Academy Awards website.

The 60-year-old actor and the 42-year-old actress were erroneously included in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories – for ‘Sully’ and ‘Arrival’ respectively – on the Oscars online outlet shortly after the nominations were announced on Tuesday (24.01.17).

ABC Digital has since recognised their error and apologised, as well as correcting their mistake.

Speaking in a statement about their blunder, they said: "This morning, in an attempt to release breaking news as announced, ABC Digital briefly posted inaccurate nomination information on the Oscar.com website."

However, they have also defended their actions and admitted although the website was incorrect their social media posts were all "accurate".

They explained: "The nominees announced by the Academy on Twitter were accurate. ABC quickly identified and corrected the errors. We apologise to the Academy, press and fans for any confusion."

However, the flame-haired beauty has admitted she wasn’t aware of the error, which saw her false nomination replace Ruth Negga’s nod for Best Actress in ‘Loving’, until after it had been corrected.

And that wasn’t the only mistake to be made, as ‘Lion’s Facebook and Twitter accounts incorrectly praised Naomi Watts earning a Best Supporting Actress nomination for the drama film instead of 49-year-old Nicole Kidman, who plays Dev Patel’s on-screen adoptive mother, Sue Brierley, in the movie.

The upload was a picture detailing the six nods they had received, and read: "BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: NAOMI WATTS."

However, the post has since been removed from all of their accounts and replaced with a corrected version.

The 89th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood and Highland Center on Sunday February 26.

Ryan Gosling paid tribute to the late Debbie Reynolds at the Palm Springs International Film Festival awards gala on Monday (01.02.17).

The 36-year-old actor’s musical ‘La La Land’ was honoured with the Vanguard Award at the annual ceremony and as he picked up the prize alongside director Damien Chazelle and composer Justin Hurwitz, he thanked the late actress – who died on December 28 aged 84, just a day after her daughter Carrie Fisher passed away – for inspiring his work on the movie with her performance in iconic film ‘Singing in the Rain’.

Ryan – whose co-star Emma Stone missed the event because she had strep throat – said: "I wish I could have said this in person but I’d like to thank Debbie Reynolds for her wonderful career of work.

"She was an inspiration to us every day. We watched ‘Singing in the Rain’ every day for inspiration, a truly unparalleled talent so thank you to her for all that inspiration."

She recalled: "I was newly single and he came with me as my date…and he held my hand as we walked up the red carpet and I still have photos of that so this is really an emotional evening for me.

"And even though he’s not here now a lot of great things have happened in my life in the last 12 years. I met the love of my life and I got married to him and I grew my family with him."

Natalie Portman was elated to accept the Desert Palm Achievement Award from Tom Hanks.

She joked: "I think I can retire now after getting Tom Hanks to say such nice things about me."

And Andrew Garfield also used his Spotlight Award acceptance speech to thank the ‘Sully’ actor – who was recognised with the Icon Award – for inspiring his own career.

Aaron Eckhart backs Tom Hanks to run for President

Aaron Eckhart thinks his ‘Sully: Miracle on the Hudson’ co-star Tom Hanks would make a great President of the United States.

The 48-year-old actor plays Jeff Skiles alongside Hanks as Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger in Clint Eastwood’s new plane drama based on the real-life events of 15 January, 2009 which saw pilot Sully carry out an emergency landing of a passenger jet on the Hudson River following a double bird strike to the engines saving the lives of the 155 passengers and crew on board in the process.

Hanks has garnered much support to run for the top political job in 2020 following his recent speech at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which he gave being honored for his life’s work in film, during which he lambasted President-elect Donald Trump for making misogynistic and devise statements and also urged his fellow countrymen to pull together through what it is a turbulent time.

Now, Eckhart has thrown his support behind Hanks running for the White House because he witnessed the speech and was personally inspired by it and would have no hesitation in voting for Hanks to be President.

In an interview with Newsweek, ‘The Dark Knight’ star said: "I just heard Tom give a speech at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. It was one of the best speeches [I’ve ever heard] … the most affecting, emotional, rational speeches done with absolute mastery and clarity. Everybody after that speech was stunned. I would vote for Tom in a second. If our politicians could speak as well as Tom could…he should be a shoe-in. I think people would actually want Tom to run for president of the United States. They have confidence that he could do the job – and they have confidence that he could get elected."

Eckhart is also sure that Hanks – who has just received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest US civilian honor, from outgoing President Barack Obama – could cope with the scrutiny that comes with being a public servant because he is "tough".

However, the Golden Globe winner believes that it is the intense scrutiny and the electoral process that dissuades many competent people from getting involved in politics.

He said: "Tom’s no joke either. He’s tough in his own way. He’s no wilting lily … he could take the heat. But why would he want to do that? It’s such a beatdown. Your family’s going to take a beatdown too. I think that’s why a lot of qualified people don’t get in the race."

Aaron Eckhart urges Miles Teller to ‘do well’

Aaron Eckhart wants Miles Teller to "do well".

The 48-year-old actor portrays legendary boxing trainer Kevin Rooney in ‘Bleed For This’ opposite the 29-year-old star as grappler Vinny Pazienza, and he wants to try and prevent his friend from the "mistakes" he made when he was starting out his career.

Asked if he felt somewhat paternal to the younger star – with whom he also worked in Miles’ first feature film ‘Rabbit Hole’ in 2010 – Aaron said: "I do. I’m constantly talking to him about mistakes I made, because I want him to do well. I don’t want him to fall into the traps I fell into."

The ‘Sully’ star doesn’t think his advice is perfect though, as he admits he spent "20 years" of his acting career making "mistakes".

He continued: "I’m 48. For 20 years I’ve made mistakes, and recovered from mistakes. I’ve asked myself tough questions. It goes back to balls. I’ve just tried to be a better person, and not take everything so seriously. Because I’m very sensitive."

But Aaron is still learning, and has even asked his fellow actors for advice on how to "handle certain things" in order to prevent himself from damaging his own career.

Speaking to The Guardian newspaper, Aaron said: "In this business, with the fame and money, there are traps. You can start believing things about yourself that won’t do you any good. And there are conversations nobody had with me that I wish they had. So, on ‘Sully’, I took the chance to ask Tom [Hanks] – top pro – how he handles certain things. Because if you get those things wrong, it damages a career."

Kathy Griffin slams Ashton Kutcher

Kathy Griffin has branded Ashton Kutcher a "d-bag".

The 56-year-old comedian has hit out at the ‘Two and a Half Men’ actor – who was previously married to Demi Moore and now has two-year-old daughter Wyatt with wife Mila Kunis – for being "rude" to her when they co-hosted an event together, and further rubbing salt into the wound when he ignored her in public a few years later.

In an extract from her new book ‘Kathy Griffin’s Celebrity Run-Ins’ obtained by the New York Post newspaper’s Page Six column, she wrote: "We co-hosted a charity event in 2005 for uBid.com.

"Kutcher, my co-host, did not speak to me once. It was bizarre and rude and made me feel as if he thought I was beneath him … Three years later, I’m grabbing something to eat … and who should walk in but Kutcher and Demi Moore. I smiled and waved. Nothin’. If you won’t say hi to me in the Mexican takeout joint, you’re a d-bag."

Elsewhere in Kathy’s book, she relates a tale in which she was backstage at an Eagles concert with Tom Hanks and Harry Styles, and the ‘Sully’ star joked he’d drive the One Direction singer to rehab because of his drunken conversation.

Recalling the exchange between Harry, who was at the show with Kendall Jenner – who she refers to as Candle – and Tom, she wrote: "Harry: Re-membah when you wuz Forrest Gump? ‘Membah? ‘Membah?

"Tom, still indulging: I was, yes.

"Harry: You wuz always runnin’? Membah?

"Yes, he was asking Tom Hanks if Tom remembers playing the role of Forrest Gump, for which he won the Academy Award. I can’t point out here enough how Harry Styles seemed to think it was his mission to make sure Tom Hanks did not forget the names of any of his films or the fact that he had starred in these films.

"Harry: That was a good film.

"Tom: I do remember.

"Without explanation, Harry Styles turned and pivoted away. Tom Hanks had been pretty much frozen in the same sport during this magical and epic exchange. Tom’s answer was perfect and delivered very dryly:

"Tom: Sometimes, I just want to drive them to rehab myself."

Tom Hanks joked about driving Harry Styles to rehab

Tom Hanks once joked he wanted to drive Harry Styles to rehab.

Kathy Griffin has revealed she was backstage at an Eagles concert with the Hollywood actor and One Direction singer in Los Angeles in 2014 when the 22-year-old hunk, who she claims had indulged in a few too many drinks, approached the ‘Sully’ star and started asking about his career.

Recalling the exchange between Harry, who was at the show with Kendall Jenner – who she refers to as Candle – and Tom in her latest book, ‘Kathy Griffin’s Celebrity Run-Ins: My A-Z Index’, the comedienne wrote: "Harry: Re-membah when you wuz Forrest Gump? ‘Membah?

Kathy also recalled Harry quizzing Tom about several of his other movies, including ‘Captain Phillips’ and ‘Saving Private Ryan’, and joked the conversation was playing out as though the 1D star was setting the actor a "memory brain teaser" challenge.

She added: "Harry: Re-membah when you wuz savin’ Private Ryan and had to bring ‘im back to ‘is mum? Re-membah?

"Tom Hanks politely replies with caution: Yes.

"Harry: Re-membah when you wuz in Cappin Phillips? And the other guy sez, ‘Oim’ the capn’ now"? ‘Membah?

"Tom, trying to figure this young man out: Yes, yes, I do remember.

"Harry: Was that scaarrry?

"Even I wasn’t expecting that question. I turned to Tom: Yeah, Tom, was that scary?

"Tom, clearly trying to save Harry Styles from himself (in a way Candle Jenner never could): Harry, have you met my friend, the comedian Kathy Griffin? (Tom really hit the word comedian hard.)

"Harry was unfazed and returned his attention to the great Tom Hanks again …with the questions. It was like he was doing a memory brain teaser. (sic)"

Captain America Civil War leads People’s Choice Awards

‘Captain America: Civil War’ has lead the way with seven nominations at the 2017 People’s Choice Awards.

The Marvel blockbuster is in with the chance of nabbing a collection of gongs at the annual event, held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at the beginning of January, after it secured a nod in the Favorite Movie category against ‘Deadpool’, ‘Finding Dory’, ‘Suicide Squad’ and ‘Zootopia’.

The film – which was directed by brothers Joe and Anthony Russo – could also walk away with the prize for the Favorite Action Movie, but will have to fight off competition from ‘Suicide Squad’, ‘Deadpool’, ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and X-Men: ‘Apocalypse’.

And with a helping hand from one of the movie’s main stars, Robert Downey Jr. – who portrays Iron Man again – ‘Captain America: Civil War’ could also walk away with the Favorite Movie Actor title, providing he manages to fight off Kevin Hart, Ryan Reynolds, Tom Hanks and Will Smith.

The 51-year-old actor could also walk away with the prestigious prize for the Favorite Action Movie Actor but has been pitted up against his co-star Chris Evans – who plays Captain America – ‘Deadpool’s Reynolds, Suicide Squad’s Smith, and ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’s Liam Hemsworth.

And the film’s leading lady Scarlett Johansson – who plays Black Widow – has also secured two nominations in the Favorite Movie Actress and Favorite Action Movie Actress category.

However, if she’s in with the chance of claiming either title, the 31-year-old beauty will need to outdo Margot Robbie and Jennifer Lawrence, who have also secured nominations for both prizes.

Chris Hemsworth, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Kevin Hart, Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron may be known for their more serious roles, but all of them are up for Favorite Comedic Movie Actor.

Anna Kendrick, Kristen Bell, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Rebel Wilson are also up for the same gong in the female equivalent category for their laugh-out-loud antics on the big screen.

On the music front, Blake Shelton, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Shawn Mendes and The Weeknd are in with the chance of claiming Favorite Male Artist, while Adele, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Britney Spears and Rihanna could walk away with the trophy for Favorite Female Artist.

And the ‘Hello’ hitmaker and ‘Side to Side’ singer have also managed to climb into the Favorite Pop Artist category against Britney Spears, Timberlake and Australian artist Sia.

Kanye West – who has been busy touring for the last year – is up against his close friend Wiz Khalifa in the Favorite Hip-Hop Artist, while DJ Khaled, G-Eazy, and Kendrick Lamar have also made the cut.
