Chris Hemsworth lived on 500 calories a day

Chris Hemsworth survived on 500 calories a day while shooting ‘In the Heart of the the Sea’.

The Australian actor, who recently wrapped shooting the upcoming disaster film directed by Ron Howard, embarked on an extreme diet for ”three or four weeks” in a bid to slim down to play shipwrecked sailor Owen Chase.

Speaking on the set, the 32-year-old star said: ”We have to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to 5, 6, 700 calories a day, a good three or four weeks and it’s going to be pretty uncomfortable, but we’ll be together in our misery.”

While Chris was happy to transform his body for the role, he admitted giving up his favorite food, including ”all the bad stuff, burgers, chocolate, ice-cream,” is never easy.

He told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: ”Anything that is not on the menu is automatically something that you have an absolute obsession with. I spend more time thinking about food than anything else at the moment.”

Ron got tips from his close friend Tom Hanks, who has lost a dramatic amount of weight for roles in the past, including ‘Cast Away,’ on the healthiest way to get the cast to lose weight.

The filmmaker said: ”He gave me some good clues and he also said you know, ‘make sure it’s organized, it’s healthy.’ ”

Rita Wilson undergoes double mastectomy for breast cancer

Rita Wilson has undergone a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

The ‘Girls’ actress – the wife of Tom Hanks – underwent the operation to remove both of her breasts and have reconstructive surgery last week after doctors discovered she had ”invasive lobular carcinoma”.

Rita, 58, has praised the doctors who treated her and her Oscar winner husband Tom for his unwavering support in the wake of her diagnosis and operation.

In a statement released to PEOPLE magazine, she said: ”Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma. I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. ”Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion. I have had an underlying condition of LCIS, (lobular carcinoma in situ) which has been vigilantly monitored through yearly mammograms and breast MRIs. Recently, after two surgical breast biopsies, PLCIS (pleomorphic carcinoma in situ) was discovered … I was relieved when the pathology showed no cancer. However, a friend who had had breast cancer suggested I get a second opinion on my pathology and my gut told me that was the thing to do. A different pathologist found invasive lobular carcinoma. His diagnosis of cancer was confirmed by, yet, another pathologist … I share this to educate others that a second opinion is critical to your health. You have nothing to lose if both opinions match up for the good, and everything to gain if something that was missed is found.”

Rita made the decision to go public with her illness to try and encourage other women to get checked for breast cancer because ”early diagnosis” is key when it comes to beating the disease.

She added: ”I feel blessed to have a loving, supportive husband, family, friends and doctors and that I am the beneficiary of advances in the field of breast cancer and reconstruction. I am getting better every day and look forward to renewed health.

”I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn’t ‘feel’ right.”

Rita is the latest high-profile person to go public with their cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Angelina Jolie revealed she had a double mastectomy and had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to minimize her risk of cancer because she carries the BRCA1 gene.

TV star Giuliana Rancic also had a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012.

Tom Hanks helped Matthew McConaughey lose weight

Tom Hanks helped Matthew McConaughey lose 50 pounds.

The ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ star revealed he called the two-time Oscar winner for advice before slimming down to play real-life AIDS victim Ron Woodroof in the new film.

He told People.com: ”I actually called Tom and had a great conversation with him about what he learned about losing weight for ‘Philadelphia’ and ‘Cast Away.’ And I consulted a nutritionist about the best way to do this.”

The 43-year-old actor was 185 lbs. before the drama and was determined to shock people with his transformation.

He said: ”I was going around and people were going, ‘Hey, are you feeling all right?’ But then I hit 135 lbs. I ran in to somebody and they didn’t just ask if I was all right, they said, ‘My God, we need to get you some help.’ And I thought, ‘There we go. That’s the perfect spot.’ ”

Matthew, who has two sons, Levi, five, and Livingston, eight months, and daughter Vida, three, with his wife Camila, isn’t worried that the weight loss will affect his health in the long run.

He said: ”I fed myself good food, just not much of it. I found through this journey that the human body is much more resilient than we give it credit for.

”Somebody told me they heard a story about how I didn’t have any energy on set, but I was kind of uncontainable with energy. All the acuity, energy and power I lost from the neck down transferred to the neck up.”

Tom Hanks doesn’t like violence in film

Tom Hanks isn’t a fan of violent blockbusters.

The ‘Saving Private Ryan’ star isn’t interested in the trend films took from early westerns into more modern movies which turned violence into a ”glamorous” experience.

He told the Mail on Sunday newspaper’s Event magazine: ”We got into another era where it becomes the kind of glamorous it can be to fire guns and blow up buildings and stuff like that.

”And I understand that to a degree, but even when I was young I wanted to see films that somehow reflected my world or the world as I understand it or an authentic take on how complicated we all are.”

The 57-year-old actor doesn’t mind the likes of the James Bond saga but he bemoans the more contemporary action movies which have become a Hollywood staple.

He explained: ”While there’s always room for a fabulous James Bond movie with a great action sequence in it, there is without doubt another type of film out there that is not that interested in it, there’s no moralisation that goes on, and I simply don’t choose to see them.

”There have always been movies like that and it’s just that now they are part and parcel of the grand commerce of the motion picture industry.”

Tom Hanks interested in real-life pirate story

Cast Away star Tom Hanks is the likely contender for the role of Captain Richard Phillips in the retelling of the Phillips harrowing hostage tale at the hands of Somali pirates, reports Deadline.

Sony Pictures has acquired the rights to the Phillips’ memoirs, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea. Phillips was the captain of the American freighter Maersk Alabama, which was hijacked by Somali pirates in April 2009.

Phillips gave himself up as a hostage to protect his crew. He remained in a lifeboat with his captors for three days before being rescued by the Navy SEALS, who raided the vessel killing three pirates and taking one into custody.

Hanks is reportedly very interested in the draft screenplay written by Billy Ray. Currently, the actor is in New York working alongside Sandra Bullock in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, adapted from the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer.

The Toy Story voice star is also planning to reteam with his sidekick Tim Allen for Disney’s Jungle Cruise, inspired by the theme park ride.

On July 1, Hanks co-stars with Julia Roberts in the romantic comedy Larry Crowne.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen to reteam with Disney

Walt Disney Pictures has confirmed that Tom Hanks and Tim Allen have signed on for the live action movie Jungle Cruise inspired the famous theme park riverboat ride, reports the Hollywood Reporter.

Hanks and Allen are regulars at the studio, each having respectively lent their voices to Woody and Buzz Lightyear in the trilogy of smash-hit animated Pixar Toy Story films.

Inspired by the movie The African Queen, Jungle Cruise is one of 22 rides in existence since the opening of the famous theme park in 1955. The attraction simulates a riverboat cruise down a major tropical river. Park guests board replica tramp steamers and are taken on a voyage past different animatronic jungle animals, while a Disney cast member delivers a humorous scripted narration.

Planned as a big action-adventure film, Hanks will likely play the role of a family guy while Allen would play the tour boat captain.

The lucrative Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise was also inspired by a Disney amusement park ride. Disney also has two other film projects based on its attractions: Magic Kingdom, directed by Jon Favreau, and Haunted Mansion, to be directed by Guillermo Del Toro.

Recently, Tom Hanks co-starred again with Julia Roberts in Larry Crowne due out July 1; they starred opposite each other in 2007’s Charlie Wilson’s War. Tim Allen stars in the comedy Geezers, which hits theaters November 10.
