Dan Brown takes over The Lost Symbol screenplay

The first draft of The Lost Symbol screenplay was written by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Shutter Island), but now author Dan Brown has decided to rewrite the script for the third film based on his bestselling novels, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

This time, Harvard symbology expert Dr Robert Langdon is summoned to Washington DC to unravel the mystery of the Freemasons and their search for an ancient pyramid containing vast knowledge.

It’s unclear whether director Ron Howard will be back behind the camera and Tom Hanks has not yet signed on to resume the role of Robert Langdon.

In September 2009, The Lost Symbol sold over a million copies on its first day. The film adaptation is planned for release in 2012.

In 2006, The Da Vinci Code film adaptation starring Tom Hanks earned $758 million in worldwide box office, and in 2009, the sequel Angels & Demons earned $486 million. Akiva Goldsman wrote the The Da Vinci Code screenplay and later co-wrote the Angels & Demons screenplay with David Koepp.

Halle Berry confirms role in Cloud Atlas

Oscar-winning American actress Halle Berry, 44, has confirmed rumours that she will be starring in a film based on the novel Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, reports comingsoon.net.

Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) has written the script and it is unclear whether he or Larry and Andy Wachowski (The Matrix) will direct. The novel takes a unique approach, telling six very different but interconnected stories. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or watched) by the main character in the next.

"I’m going to do a movie probably in the summer with the Wachowskis…A really interesting movie. Sort of like what they did with "The Matrix," they have another really amazing idea that’s sort of gonna stretch our brains even further. And so I’m really excited about that and that’s probably gonna be in the summer. And that’s with Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman," said Berry.

However, Hanks and Portman have not yet confirmed their participation, nor have James McAvoy and Ian McKellen – also rumoured to be in talks for this project.

Set for release in 2011, Berry’s latest projects include the comedy Shoe Addicts Anonymous and the thriller Dark Tide, where she met new boyfriend, French actor Olivier Martinez.

Tom Hanks Defends His Film

Similar to feedback after the release of The Da Vinci Code in 2006, the film Angels & Demons has become the target of criticism of religious authorities, who say that the film attacks the foundation of their beliefs and faith.

In the film adaptation of Dan Brown’s novel, Tom Hanks resumes his role as religious symbols expert, Robert Langdon. He investigates the murder of a physicist and an act of terrorism against the Vatican.

In an interview with the New York Daily News, Tom Hanks was baffled by the criticism received, even before the film’s release. "People will see there’s nothing sacrilegious about it at all. Yes, we had a few things go on that are completely fictionalized; but there’s no reason to have a big hurly-burly over what is essentially a whodunit (murder mystery)," said the actor.

Angels & Demons opens in theatres on May 15.
