Where to stream Top Gun in Canada ahead of Top Gun: Maverick

After a staggering number of COVID-related delays, Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick will finally release exclusively in theatres on May 27th.

The action drama film is a sequel to the late Tony Scott’s iconic 1986 Top Gun and sees Tom Cruise reprise his role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he trains a new team of Top Gun graduates.

Now, if you’re like me and hadn’t ever seen the original Top Gun film before, you might be wondering where to watch it in Canada. After all, Maverick has been getting rave reviews, with many calling it a significant improvement over the original. (For what it’s worth, my colleague Bradley Bennett and I got to attend an early screening last week, and we both agree: the movie is absolutely fantastic).

With all of that in mind, here’s how you can stream the original Top Gun in Canada. All in all, you have a few options.

Firstly, the film is streaming on Crave’s Starz tier, which costs $5.99/month on top of the base $19.99/month membership. Of course, that’s pretty expensive if you don’t already have Crave, and in that case, Top Gun is also available on Prime Video through Starz’s $5.99/month add-on with a 30-day trial.

Elsewhere, the film is streaming on Paramount+, which costs $5.99/month with a seven-day free trial. You can also rent it for $3.99 to $4.99 on premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms like iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video and the Cineplex Store.

Top Gun sequel?

In the hopes of capitalizing on the success of the original film, Paramount Pictures has approached producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott for a Top Gun sequel, according to comingsoon.net.

Busy Academy-award winning writer, Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie), has also been approached to write the screenplay.

Initially, it was reported Tom Cruise might make a cameo appearance, but a spokesperson for the actor later told Entertainment Weekly that Cruise would not participate project. It’s not clear whether the Maverick character will be played by another actor or simply written out of the story.

Bruckheimer said, a few months ago, that the aviation community has completely changed since the time the movie was made, and they would need to consider how to approach the sequel and incorporate the Maverick character. At this time, no shooting schedule has been announced.

Back in 1986, Top Gun amassed $345 million in worldwide box office receipts and won two Oscars, one for best original music and one for best original song, Take My Breath Away, sung by Berlin.

Tom Cruise Returns to Top Gun

The Sun reports that there are rumours suggesting that Tom Cruise may star in the follow-up to the cult film Top Gun.

Paramount Studios approached the actor to resume his role as Maverick in Top Gun 2. He would play a flight instructor and would have to teach young students who are as arrogant and challenging as he was when he arrived at the Top Gun academy.

22 years ago, during the first installment, a sequel was already being discussed. However, the project never materialised because at the time, the actor’s salary demands were found to be excessive.

The screenplay for Top Gun 2 has already been written. Therefore, it’s up to Tom Cruise to make the film happen.

Cruise, whose career seems be taking a slight beating, will make an appearance in the comedy Tropic Thunder, coming to theatres on August 13.
