Twitter to begin allowing cannabis companies to advertise freely

Elon Musk thinks 4/20 is funny.

This makes it not much of a surprise to hear that Twitter will begin allowing cannabis companies to advertise freely on the platform, as confirmed in a recent press release.

This guideline change comes after Twitter became the first major platform to allow cannabis advertisements earlier this year. Previously, the company was prohibited from showing weed products in its ads or promoting the sale of any cannabis products. They could, however, link ads to websites selling the products.

The press release goes on to say that companies “may also continue responsibly linking to their owned and operated web pages and e-commerce experiences for CBD, THC, and cannabis-related products and services.” The site also made changes for medical licensees and opened up additional recreational markets.

Twitter may now have a leg up on other sites like Google and Meta that still prohibit ads related to cannabis and cannabis-related products.

Musk is no stranger to cannabis culture, both by indulging himself on Joe Rogan’s podcast (although we’re pretty sure that was a one-time thing) or through multiple jokes throughout his many companies.

The CEO even set 4/20 as the date to remove legacy blue checks for users on Twitter and test the launch of SpaceX’s Starship and Super Heavy rocket.

It looks like cannabis ads on Twitter may be the greenest Musk sees after the CEO lost billions in his net worth after a hectic 24 hours this month.

Twitter Blue subscribers will see ads outside timelines, despite Musk’s promise to cut ads in half

Remember when Elon Musk promised Twitter Blue users would see half the ads? Well, now that the feature has gone live, the fine print tells a different story.

The perk doesn’t actually seem to remove half the ads.

“See approximately 50% fewer ads in the For You and Following timelines,” Twitter’s website states.

The reductions only apply to timelines and not on promoted content seen elsewhere on the platform, including profiles and Twitter replies.

“There may be times when there are more or fewer non-promoted Tweets between promoted Tweets,” the website states.

As Musk also noted in his December tweet, Twitter users will be able to pay for a higher tier with no ads. It’s unclear how this will work and if Musk will actually stick by his word of “no ads.”

Elon Musk lays off a fresh set of employees after saying dismissals were done

Employees who once successfully avoided major layoffs at Twitter were not safe from future cuts, despite promises from company CEO Elon Musk.

After Musk laid off employees across its headquarters in November, those who remained were told there would be no more layoffs, according to The Verge. But recent events show that hasn’t been the case.

The publication reports the company laid off dozens from Twitter’s sales and engineering departments, including one employee who was responsible for engineering the platform’s ad business.

Musk has also reportedly given employees one week to fix ad targeting in Twitter’s main feed. The Verge reports Musk wants Twitter’s ads to work like Google search ads, focusing on keywords instead of user activity.

One of the laid-off employees is Marcin Kadluczka, an engineer manager for monetization. The Verge reports Kadluczka “reported directly to Musk,” and he issued his one-week deadline just prior to laying off employees.

Twitter to share ad revenue with creators

Twitter will now share revenue it makes from ads with creators.

In a tweet, CEO Elon Musk said the revenue will apply “for ads that appear in their reply threads.”

The specifics on how much creators can make remains unclear. All we know is that creators must be part of Twitter Blue.

The news comes as Twitter announced it will start charging developers to access its once free API, likely ending free access to some of the best Twitter adjacent apps on the market.

Twitter dangling free ads in plea to attract advertisers

Since Elon Musk took over the platform last year, Twitter has been in a downward spiral of changes.

These changes contributed to several advertisers backing out from displaying their ads on Twitter. But now, in a desperate plea to win back advertisers, Twitter appears to be offering free advertisements.

According to emails reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Twitter is offering to match advertisers’ spending up to $250,000, provided they spend half a million dollars on ads by February 28th.

The offer comes with Super Bowl right around the corner. The WSJ reports that the sports event is Twitter’s biggest revenue-generating day of the year. “Advertisers in recent years have flocked to Twitter during the Super Bowl to generate buzz around their big game marketing efforts.”

Several advertisers, including GroupM, which manages ads for Google, L’Oréal, Bayer, Nestle and others, took part in a mass exodus by advising clients against advertising on the platform, citing moderation concerns. Marketing agency Cosette also offered the Government of Canada similar advice.

In what seemed to be an attempt to gain ground, SpaceX took out advertising space. Like Twitter, Musk also serves as the CEO of SpaceX, which typically doesn’t purchase large advertising campaigns on the platform.

It’s yet to be seen if Twitter’s “special offer” will be beneficial.
