Ads from brands appeared on white nationalist Twitter pages

While some companies, like Apple and Amazon, have started advertising on Twitter again, others have raised concerns after their ads appeared on the pages of white nationalists.

The Washington Post (via The Verge) reported that some 40 high-profile brands and organizations have complained, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Amazon, Uber, Snap, GoDaddy, USA Today and Morning Brew.

Ads for some of these organizations were spotted on the Twitter profiles of Andrew Anglin, the editor of neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer, and Patrick Casey, who previously led the white nationalist group Identity Evropa, later rebranded as the American Identity Movement. Bother Anglin and Casey had their accounts banned from Twitter in 2013 and 2019, respectively. However, after Elon Musk took over Twitter and granted a “general amnesty,” both returned to the platform.

Moreover, The Washington Post reported seeing ads alongside white supremacist posts on Twitter pages with names like “No White Guilt Clips” and “White Power Ranger.”

It’s worth noting that the ads no longer appear on Anglin’s or Casey’s accounts. A Twitter employee told The Washington Post that Twitter pages must be flagged to prevent advertising from appearing on them. Twitter didn’t respond to requests for comment from The Verge or The Washington Post, but that might have something to do with Musk reportedly firing most of the company’s press team.

Speaking of layoffs, if Twitter relies on a system of flagging accounts to prevent advertising from appearing on them, it’s highly likely Anglin, Casey, and others slipped through the cracks. With Musk’s general amnesty allowing thousands of accounts to return to the platform and Twitter operating with a skeleton crew, there just might not be enough people flagging problematic accounts.

The HHS told The Washington Post that it would pull ads from Twitter since “having [ads] appear on hateful Twitter channels is inconsistent with [its] values.” Similarly, USA Today said it would contact Twitter because the content “obviously does not align with [its] values or mission.”

Ultimately, it seems like those who have resumed ads on Twitter (or who never stopped advertising in the first place) may be running into the problems that led several brands and advertising agencies to pull out of Twitter in the first place. After Musk’s takeover, he tweeted that Twitter’s ad revenue had fallen and blamed activists for it. Later, ad agencies labelled Twitter “high risk” as they bailed on the platform. Musk, however, continued blaming activists for the consequences of his own actions.

Uber testing Audio Recording safety feature in Calgary

Uber is bringing a new safety feature to Calgary.

Audio Recording allows riders and drivers to record audio during their trip. Uber will only be able to access the recording if the driver or rider reports an issue and shares the audio with the company.

Uber says privacy will be protected, and audio recordings are encrypted and stored on the device of the person making the recording.

Riders and drivers can start taping after the trip has begun. To access the feature, select the blue shield on the map to pull up the safety toolkit. Click ‘audio recording’ and give permission to the microphone. Select ‘start.’

While Calgary is the only Canadian city where the feature is currently available, Uber says it will roll out Audio Recording to the rest of the country in the new year.

Uber employees didn’t believe a teen hacked its internal system

Employees at Uber did not believe a hacker had gained access to its internal system, despite the hacker stating the system was compromised.

Perhaps it was the way the hacker revealed their presence. “I announce that I am a hacker and Uber has suffered a data breach,” they wrote on the company’s Slack channel.

The range of emojis responding to the message illustrates employees’ disbelief, as seen in the screenshot of the hacker’s message shared on Twitter.

The Washington Post reports the hacker is 18 years old and breached Uber’s internal system for fun.

In a tweet, Uber shared it was aware of the breach.

“We are currently responding to a cybersecurity incident. We are in touch with law enforcement and will post additional updates here as they become available.”

Uber rolls out Comfort Electric in Vancouver

Riders in Vancouver have a new option to pick from when the next time they use Uber.

Comfort Electric features premium electric vehicles, including Tesla and Polestar. But riders aren’t the only ones who can access something new.

Drivers under the new category also have the potential to earn more under Uber’s Zero Emissions incentive, including an extra dollar for every eligible trip. Uber says electric vehicle drivers on the platform have avoided using almost 6 million gallons of gas.

Uber says its partnership with Hertz has paved the way for the program. The partnership allows drivers to rent Teslas on a weekly basis to complete trips.

Vancouver is the only Canadian city where Comfort Electric is available. However, drivers in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal can rent a Tesla from Hertz to complete rides.

You can download Uber from the App Store and Google Play.

Uber providing discounted ride promo while polls are open on Election Day in Ontario

On Thursday, June 2nd, Uber is providing a discount promotion on rides in Ontario. This is being held for the duration of Election Day and aims to ensure voters can get out and vote.

“We’re doing our part to make sure that transportation is not a barrier,” Uber Canada wrote on Twitter. The company’s global commitment to encourage voters to get to the polls continues. On June 2nd, polling stations are open from 9am to 9pm ET. However, Uber Canada is extending that window. The offer is available between 8:30am and 9:30pm ET.

Uber Canada drops mask mandates in vehicles

As Canada opts to maintain mask mandates on planes, trains and other forms of transit, Uber Canada has decided to drop mask requirements.

This means that drivers and passengers in Ubers in every province and territory except Quebec, will be able to ride/drive mask-free starting Friday, April 22nd.

However, there’s a catch. Drivers hold the power to choose if they want to drive in a maskless car and still have the right to refuse rides if they feel unsafe.

According to CTV, Uber is still encouraging users to wear masks and is following Health Canada’s guidelines. Uber also told CTV that riders can message drivers through the app and ask can if the driver is wearing a mask or to put one on.

As COVID-19 case counts continued to rise across the country, Quebec is the only province that still has its mask mandates in place until April 30th. Therefore, Uber is still required to follow the province’s restrictions.

Competing ride-sharing service, Lyft, is still enforcing mask-wearing in its vehicles across Canada.

As the recent spring COVID spike affects more than 7,000 people per day, Canada’s top doctor, Theresa Tam, still urges Canadians to wear masks.

CTV also notes that Toronto is enforcing mask mandates within taxis and ridesharing vehicles. However, I noticed that the page with this information was only updated in January of 2022. After making calls to the city and Ontario health officials, I learned that this regulation is likely no longer in place since Toronto follows Ontario’s health guidelines, which no longer require masks to be worn in Taxis and Ubers.

Uber is reworking its fare splitting option, making it temporarily unavailable for users

Uber will temporarily remove a feature that allows riders to split fares and assures customers the change isn’t permanent.

“We are in the process of reworking how riders split fares, and the feature will be temporarily removed from the Uber app next month,” an Uber spokesperson told MobileSyrup.

Mashable first reported the news. Riders in the UK first got an email telling them the feature would discontinue on March 21. The company has said the date is a mistake, and Uber will deactivate the feature next month.

“We know this is a popular feature, so rest assured that we are planning to roll out a new, improved version in the coming months,” the spokesperson said.

While there are other options for riders to split fares in Canada, such as using e-transfer, the convenience of splitting the bill within the app will surely be missed.
