British Columbians can now order cannabis for delivery through Uber Eats

Starting on April 18th, Uber Eats Canada will offer cannabis for delivery in British Columbia, just six months after allowing deliveries in Ontario.

A new partnership between Uber Eats Canada and Leafly will allow BC residents of legal age (19+) to place orders for local and licensed cannabis retailers through the Uber Eats app.

The move signals the company’s expansion for cannabis deliveries after allowing Ontario to do the same in October of 2022.

The process of ordering cannabis through Uber Eats is made simple and features just a few steps. Users will have to confirm their age to find a supported shop and place an order from a shop within a distance. The order will be delivered by a licensed cannabis retailer’s provincially certified staff, and once it arrives, the customer’s age and sobriety will be verified as required.

A list of the current participating cannabis retailers for Uber Eats in Vancouver can be found below:

  • Sea to Sky
  • Original Farm Cannabis
  • AR Cannabis
  • North Shore Cannabis
  • 4Twenty Cannabis
  • Queensborough Cannabis
  • Leisure For Cannabis

Ideally, Uber Eats will continue to spread cannabis delivery options across the country not that it’s available in Ontario and British Columbia. Maybe the company will also pick up on the potential combination of delivering munchies alongside cannabis via special offers?

Uber Eats is available on iOS and Android.

Extra sauce and Japanese food, here’s what Canadians ordered on Uber Eats this year

Uber Eats is one of Canada’s leading food delivery services, with thousands of people ordering across the country every year.

In 2022, there were endless possibilities. But according to the company’s annual Cravings Report, which summarises what Canadians ordered over the past year, Japanese is the top rate cuisine in Canada. Fries are rated as the most requested side; miso soup is fourth.

Customers in Kingston, Ottawa, and Peterborough, Ontario, are rated as being the most polite, saying “please” and “thank you” in their order instructions.

Residents in Canada’s largest cities, Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, are the pickiest eaters and the most often to add special instructions to their orders. Toronto residents ask for “hot sauce on the side,” Vancouverites want “no green onion,” and Montreal wants “extra sauce.”

Residents in the three cities are also responsible for making the most expensive orders on the platform. One Toronto Uber Eats customer spent $1,048.01 on a burger restaurant. A Vancouver customer shelled out $1,039.01 for Japanese cuisine, and a Montreal customer spent $893.54 at a cheese shop and bakery.

DoorDash released a similar report outlining its top delivery trends in 2022. You can read that here.

Uber shares key Canadian statistics on its 10th anniversary in the country

Uber launched in Canada exactly years ago today on March 15th, 2012 (Uber Eats came later in 2015). Since then, the service has become a staple in the transit and food delivery, along with providing Canadians an additional way to earn income.

To mark the occasion, the company, which was co-founded by Calgarian entrepreneur Garrett Camp, released statistics to show the impact it has had on Canadians nationwide. Its services are available in over 140 municipalities in the nation, spanning nine provinces.

Uber is easy to use and because of this, over the past ten years, over 17 million people have used the service to go somewhere or to have food delivered. About 500 million uber trips have been recorded and over 300 million food orders have been delivered since the service launched, recording over 5.5 billion kilometres in the total area covered.

Over 600,000 Canadians have worked hard behind the wheel and have earned a total of $7.8 billion since 2012.

“There are over 100,000 active drivers and delivery people on the road across the country” this year alone, says Uber in its blog post. “In a normal year, we estimate that Uber saves riders over 13 million hours a year. That’s the equivalent of driving from Halifax to Vancouver over 230,000 times.”

That is not to say that the past ten years have been easy for Uber. The industry it once had a monopoly over is now full of competition, leaving the company unprofitable — so much so that Uber lost more than $27 billion in the last five years alone, according to a Toronto Star report.

Rapidly increasing gas costs are proving to be heavy for drivers, and riders alike, who are now having to pay a higher cost for the same distance covered. Also, every price increase that Uber has attempted has been met with harsh pushback and criticisms from the app users.

Uber’s high scale also contributes to higher traffic levels in busy cities, resulting in more traffic congestions along with leaving a higher carbon footprint.

The company says that its focus for the next decade is on sustainability. The company has partnered with non-profit organization Plug’n Drive to support its drivers in making the switch to electric vehicles. This comes soon after the company committed to operating a zero-emission platform globally by 2040. In Canadian cities like Montreal and Vancouver, the company aims to achieve the same goal by 2030, alleviating some of the issues that have tainted the ride service’s image in recent years.

Uber Eats now offers cannabis products

Ontario residents can now place a pickup order for their favourite cannabis products from Tokyo Smoke through the Uber Eats app.

The two organizations entered a partnership that went into effect Monday. Uber Eats users can now access a new, dedicated, section on the app that allows them to select products from the Tokyo Smokes flower collection and a range of accessories. The retailer has 56 locations across the province, according to its website. All orders are completed within an hour of being placed.

“We are partnering with industry leaders like Tokyo Smoke to offer safe, convenient options for people in Ontario to purchase legal cannabis,” Lola Kassim, general manager of Uber Eats Canada, said in a press release.”By combining a streamlined ordering process through the Uber Eats app with Tokyo Smoke’s in-person pickup service, we’re creating a new end-to-end experience for responsible cannabis ordering across the province.”

The underground illegal cannabis market continues to be an issue in Canada, and the companies say a partnership like this can help combat that. According to Stats Canada, the underground market accounts for 40 percent of all nonmedical cannabis sales.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Log onto the Uber Eats apps and select the cannabis category or search for Tokyo Smoke. A warning will come up asking the user to confirm their age.

Step 2: Once the age is confirmed, users will be able to select what products they would like to place for pick up.

Step 3: Place your order and head over to the selected store where an employee will check identification and fulfill the order.

Uber Eats’ app is available on iOS and Android.

Uber Eats will let you search for your next takeout with emojis

The award for the most unnecessary yet unique feature goes to Uber Eats.

The food-delivery company has just added a new feature to its mobile app and web page that allows users to search for food using emojis.

Don’t fret, you can still type in your food preference, though the feature might help if you’re abroad, and don’t know what that specific dish you’re craving is called.

The feature is embedded in the new pickup maps, which shows a list of restaurants in your immediate surroundings, and allows you to search for food with over 30 emojis, including the Pizza, Burger, Ramen emojis and more.

You can find the emoji searchable map in Uber Eats’ Android and iOS apps as well as its website in all locations where the food-delivery company’s services are available.
