Updates on Bergeron, Marchand and Krejci on Saturday.

The Boston Bruins are just days away from the start of the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs and after such a successful regular season effort, you know the expectations being placed on the Bruins’ shoulders are at an all-time high.

That being said things aren’t perfect for the Bruins coming into the playoffs and unfortunately that appears to include a few things on the injury front as well. On Saturday, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery provided a number of status updates regarding his core players, including an update on the status of Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron.

“You know we’re just giving him extra rest,” said Montgomery on Saturday. “He’s had a long year.”

Bergeron was notably absent from practice on Saturday and after he left the final game of the regular season early, that has understandably caused some concern ahead of the playoffs. That being said Montgomery downplayed the situation as best that he could and did something similar when the topic of Bruins forward Marchand came up.

“Same thing with Marchy,” said Montgomery. “Marchy wanted to give it a try today and he had a little bit of soreness so I said ‘Get off the ice.'”

Montgomery cited a hard practice repeatedly as the reason for being extra careful with some of his guys on Saturday, something that lines up with the scrimmage the Bruins had on the day. It sounds like Nick Foligno, Derek Forbort, and perhaps the returning David Krejci were the motivating factors behind that particular decision.

“The reason I wanted to have a hard practice with some scrimmage involved is we’re looking at Foligno and Forbort and we wanna see where their condition at game speed is,” confirmed Montgomery.

You can hear the full comments from the Bruins head coach in the short clip below:

Android QPR1 Beta 3 is now available and you can download it on your Pixel 7

Android 13 QPR1 Beta 3 is now available, and surprisingly, it’s also available on the Pixel 7 series.

Google’s patch notes don’t mention new features but detail bug fixes, including ones that deal with blank screens, unlock issues, full-screen video playback flickering and more.

Here are the notes:

Developer-reported and user-reported issues

  • Fixed an issue for some devices where the screen unlock UI was displayed over notifications and other lock-screen content. (Issue #254163754)
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the “Flip camera for selfie” gesture from working on some devices.
  • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused the screen to go blank while attempting to unlock a device.
  • Fixed an issue that sometimes prevented a device from being unlocked using either Face Unlock or Fingerprint Unlock when the device had been idle for multiple hours.
  • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused fullscreen video playback to flicker after enabling always-on-display features and locking the screen.

While the update notes don’t mention new features, 9to5Google has discovered that there’s a new ‘Clear calling’ menu. The menu features a switch with Google explaining that Clear calling depends on your Wi-Fi and mobile connection.  The squiggle line in the media player also had a slight change recently.

You can download the Android 13 QPR1 Beta 3 on the Pixel 4 series through the Pixel 7 series.

Google plans annual update cadence for Wear OS

Google is back in the smartwatch game, but understandably people are still skeptical, given the company’s penchant for killing off projects (pour one out for Stadia).

However, Google has been hitting the streets to tell people it’s committed to Wear OS. The company’s senior vice president of hardware, Rick Osterloh, told The Verge in an interview that Google had long-term plans for the Pixel Watch. And earlier this week, the company confirmed to Wired that it was planning an annual update cadence for Wear OS.

Google’s director of product management for Wear OS, Björn Kilburn, told Wired in a virtual interview that:

“Our goal is, from a platform perspective, for us to release a new version of Wear generally every year in a similar fashion to mobile, partly because we need to support mobile. If new functionalities added in Android are critical for watches and hearables, then we’ve got to find a way to get it into the watch.”

In other words, those with Wear OS devices can expect yearly updates just like smartphone owners get yearly Android updates. There will also be quarterly updates with “new experiences” through the year, just like with Android.

Moreover, Kilburn said that Wear OS 3 would move towards a smartphone-like update model where manufacturers are responsible for pushing over-the-air updates to wearables. That may come as bad news for some, given it risks fragmenting the Wear OS ecosystem much like Android smartphones. On the other hand, it may enable wearable makers to extend support — Wired notes that Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 will get four years of updates. Google’s Pixel Watch, on the other hand, will get three years of software updates.

Finally, Kilburn said that Google was “absolutely committed” to Wear OS, pointing to the number of refreshed apps, the company’s collaboration with Samsung, and the Pixel Watch as evidence.

If you’re interested in reading the rest of Kilburn’s thoughts about Wear OS, the Pixel Watch, and more, check out the full interview here.

Some iPhone users can’t update apps after updating to iOS 16

Some people (including myself) are experiencing issues updating apps after making the jump to iOS 16.

The problem stems from a new ‘Terms and Conditions’ agreement. After updating to iOS 16, when trying to update apps from the App Store, users are prompted to accept the new agreement. However, when tapping ‘Agree,’ a pop-up says there was an error and to try later. Strangely, you can still download apps without agreeing to the terms — only updates are impacted.

I had just stumbled across the issue myself and was scratching my head over what was going on when I saw a post from MacRumors about it. The publication suggests it’s an issue with Apple’s servers, but there’s no official word on what’s going on or how long it might take to fix.

Some people who are running iOS 15 may also experience the issue, but it seems to impact iOS 16 users primarily. My wife is running iOS 15.7 and doesn’t have the issue, and other MobileSyrup team members running iOS 16 don’t seem affected either (although they previously ran the iOS 16 beta and didn’t download the update today).

Hopefully Apple rolls out a fix for the issue soon.

Android’s underused ‘Upgrade Party’ could educate users about updates

Although some might not realize it, not many people outside of the tech enthusiast community know much about software updates. For many people, software updates aren’t exciting; they’re a chore and often bring unforeseen or unwanted changes.

I know quite a few people who installed the Android 12 update, for example, and were frustrated with the new design because it moved or changed things they had gotten used to. However, Google has tools to communicate new features to users — Pixel users, for example, likely see notifications from the Pixel Tips app with details about new features in an update. The thing is, Android actually has a built-in tool for sharing this kind of information.

Esper’s senior technical editor, Mishaal Rahman, shared details about the ‘Android Upgrade Party’ feature, an educational tool available in Android since at least the Android 11 update, which manufacturers can leverage to show off new features after an update.

Rahman highlighted some of Upgrade Part’s features in a Twitter thread and a YouTube video (via Android Police). In short, Upgrade Party can welcome users to a new update and then walk them through the most important new features using either a generic flow from Google or a custom one from manufacturers.

Moreover, Rahman cited a small number of examples of the feature in use, including the Nokia 7.2, Nokia X10, and the Oppo Find X2 Pro. It’s a bit of a bummer that more manufacturers aren’t using the feature. It might help educate users about new features and changes and possibly encourage some enthusiasm about updates, rather than people walking about from big changes feeling confused.

Google rolls out February update to Pixel 3a and newer

Google Pixel smartphones have started receiving their February security update. Unlike the last few updates, this update should also hit your Pixel 6 series device.

Here’s what’s included in this patch:

Camera
  • Fix for issue causing device reboot when using camera in certain conditions [Pixel 6, 6 Pro].
Bluetooth
  • Fix for issue causing audio playback to disconnect while using certain Bluetooth devices [Pixel 6, 6 Pro].
  • General improvements for Bluetooth audio quality with certain media codecs [Pixel 6, 6 Pro].
Framework
  • Fix for issue causing keyboard to display over input text in certain conditions [Pixel 3a and newer].
Telephony
  • Connectivity fixes for specific carrier networks [Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5].

Hopefully, this update doesn’t come with any bugs last December’s update. Google’s update page says that this should be rolling out over the coming weeks. In theory, it should be hitting your Pixel phones in Canada, but oddly enough neither the Rogers or Telus OS schedules mention Pixel smartphones.

To update your phone navigate to Settings > System > System Update > Check for Updates.

Let us know in the comments below if your Pixel smartphone has received the patch.

Cineplex shares update on showtimes for several provinces amid new restrictions

On the heels of releasing an updated plan for theatres in Ontario amid the surging Omicron COVID variant, Cineplex shared an update for the rest of Canada on its Twitter page.

Cineplex started by thanking guests for being patient while its teams work to adjust as restrictions change from province to province. Additionally, the company noted that it temporarily hid some showtimes from its website while assessing the new government mandates — ticketholders who can no longer find their showtime don’t need to worry as the screening is still happening.

Next, Cineplex broke down what’s happening in different provinces:

B.C., Manitoba and Newfoundland

Cineplex says it’s “reviewing what was just announced in these provinces and will update Cineplex.com shortly.” The company urged guests to check their local theatre listings for updates.

“While our goal is to honour all tickets, any guests who are impacted by these government mandates will be emailed directly by our Guest Services team,” Cineplex said.

Finally, the theatre company noted that showtimes won’t be impacted before Sunday in Newfoundland, Monday in B.C. and Tuesday in Manitoba.

New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and P.E.I.

Cineplex says it’s adding showtimes back to its website for these provinces. Further, guests impacted by the government restrictions have been contacted.

Finally, guests that have a ticket and have not received an email are “good to go.”

Ontario

For Ontario, Cineplex says it won’t be able to serve food or drinks starting Sunday. Additionally, locations in Ottawa will be subject to physical distancing requirements, which may affect a limited number of showtimes starting Sunday. Cineplex will contact impacted guests via email over the weekend.

You can learn more about what Cineplex is doing in Ontario here.

Quebec

Cineplex says a limited number of showtimes on Monday and Tuesday may be impacted, but all tickets for the weekend are valid. Again, keep an eye on your email since that’s how Cineplex will contact impacted guests.

You can check out Cineplex’s full statement here. It may also be a good idea to follow the Cineplex Twitter account to keep up with these updates as they arrive.
