Opensignal report says Canadian 5G is closing the urban-rural gap

According to a new report from Opensignal, Canadian 5G is helping to close the gap between urban and rural network experiences.

Opensignal gathered data across various categories, including download speed and time spent without signal, sourced from several countries to compare with Canada. Opensignal chose “three similarly large markets,” which include Australia, Brazil, and the U.S. It also included Germany in the comparison.

Starting with download speeds, Opensignal found that Canadians experienced fairly similar 5G speeds regardless if they were in rural or small, medium or large urban areas. Specifically, rural users experienced 5G speeds that were, on average, 12.2Mbps (or 9.5 percent) slower than large urban areas.

That difference is significantly better than 4G speeds, which saw urban area speeds on average 34-52 percent faster than rural speeds.

Looking at how Canada stacked up to other countries, Brazil was the only one with statistically similar rural and urban speeds. Australia had the largest difference in 5G speeds between rural and urban areas, but Germany and the U.S. also had significant speed differences.

Also of note is that Canada’s 5G speeds overall are among the lowest of compared countries, with only rural Germany and rural U.S. posting slower 5G speeds.

Signal availability

Moving onto signal availability, Opensignal measured the percentage of time users spend without signal and the availability of 5G measured by the amount of time spent connected to a 5G signal.

For the amount of time with no signal, Canada didn’t see a huge difference between rural and urban areas, although urban users spent less time without signal. Rural areas saw Canadians without signal 2.3 percent of the time, compared to 1.3 percent for small urban and 0.9 percent for medium and large urban areas.

Looking at the other countries, Australia and Brazil saw the highest difference between rural and urban time without signal, with rural users without signal at 5.2 percent and 6.8 percent of the time, respectively. Germany and the U.S. had smaller gaps in signal availability between rural and urban users. Opensignal says the result is impressive for Canada given the “relative size of those markets.”

When it comes to 5G availability, there was a little more of a divide between rural and urban Canada. Rural Canadians had 5G access 9.6 percent of the time. Small urban areas had 10.4 percent availability, not much higher than rural, but medium and large urban areas had 14.7 and 14.2 percent availability, respectively.

Australia had the highest divide between rural and urban 5G availability, followed by the U.S. and Brazil. Germany had no significant difference in availability. Interestingly, the U.S. had the highest overall 5G availability.

Game experience

Finally, Opensignal shared a comparison of ‘games experience,’ its attempt to quantify how mobile users experience playing real-time multiplayer games over a network. Per Opensignal’s definitions page, it calculates game experience by measuring the end-to-end experience from users’ devices to the internet end-points that host real games. Game experience is measured on a scale of 0-100.

On 5G, there was no significant difference in game experience for rural and urban users in Canada. With the exception of Australia, most of the other countries also had comparable game experience scores on 5G across rural and urban regions.

Opensignal rounds out the report by noting that Canadian 5G experiences are set to improve as carriers begin rolling out 3,500MHz spectrum. Hopefully as the spectrum rolls out and improves 5G, the network continues to offer similar experiences for both urban and rural Canadians.

Nicole Kidman has easy life

Nicole Kidman has an ”easy” life.

The 47-year-old actress is very happy with husband Keith Urban and their daughters Sunday, six, and four-year-old Faith and admits she didn’t realize how to achieve domestic bliss until she got there.

Nicole – who also has adopted kids Isabella, 22, and Connor, 19, with ex-husband Tom Cruise – said: ”We have a very easy, warm, peaceful life.

”I think that’s something that I always wanted and I was heading towards and I didn’t know how to find it — and I found it now. I laugh a lot more now, I’m happier.”

Nicole and Keith refuse to pose for pictures with fans when they are out as a family because their children don’t understand why they are being approached.

The actress told ‘Today Show’ host Matt Lauer: ”Our kids don’t understand what we do, so for them, it’s just, ‘Why is this stranger taking a photo of you?’ And it’s very discombobulating for them.”

Despite her years of Hollywood success, the ‘Paddington’ star is still stunned by how far she has come since she was a child dreaming of being an actress.

She said: ”It’s been an extraordinary journey, my life, from a little girl who grew up in Sydney and sort of watched the Academy Awards on TV when I was just seven years old –to have actually come that whole distance is extraordinary.”

Keith Urban isn’t jealous of Nicole Kidman’s love scenes

Nicole Kidman insists Keith Urban doesn’t get jealous of her love scenes.

The ‘Before I Go to Sleep’ actress says her husband of eight years had no problem with her appearing naked in the new movie or shooting racy sex scenes with her co-star Colin Firth.

The 37-year-old star beauty told E! News: ”[It was] a very quick, quick scene.

”I suppose I don’t find those scenes awkward because once you’re in character, you’re in character. There is a way in which you work it out and if you’re both actors then you know what you’re doing. I mean, Keith’s obviously easy with everything because he feels incredibly loved and protected. And I think once all of that is fine, then it’s what we do.”

The Australian actress, who has daughters, Sunday, six, and Faith, three, with the country singer, regrets recently admitting she hopes ”every month I am pregnant but I’m not.”

She said: ”I’ve just got to learn. One, you can’t be irreverent. Two, you’ve got to be very careful with humor. Three, you know. I never learn. I’ve been doing this so long…”

She added: ”I mean, I would be blessed to have another child as…you know, we love our family. The chances of it are very slim, but hey, I’d be blessed.”

Nicole Kidman loves skydiving

Nicole Kidman enjoys going skydiving.

The 47-year-old actress – who stars in psychological thriller ‘Before I Go To Sleep’ – loves skydiving because it feels just like flying.

She told The Telegraph Review: ”I like a love story too! But I’m also a person who jumps out of a plane: I have those strange dichotomies in my personality.”

When asked if she’d ever go bungee jumping, she added: ”No, it’s not elegant. I don’t like the idea of being on a cord and hanging upside down.

”Skydiving is the closest thing to flying.”

However, Nicole recently revealed that her ”daredevil” ways would become a thing of the past for the sake of her two young children, Sunday and Faith and her two grown-up children, who she adopted during her marriage to Tom Cruise.

She admitted: ”I feel the desire to stay alive now.”

Speaking about how her children changed her life, she added: ”I just feel like I’m in the world right now.

”There have been times when I haven’t felt in the world, when I haven’t cared whether I was going to be here or not, so my relationship with being on the earth was probably not as intense.

”And right now, there’s an intensity – I want to be here.”

Nicole Kidman to return to West End

Nicole Kidman is planning to return to the West End.

The 47-year-old actress is involved in ”complex negotiations” which could see her sign up to star in two plays back-to-back after she wowed London audiences with her hit ‘The Blue Room’ in 1998.

Speaking to the Daily Mail newspaper, she said: ”I don’t know how it’s going to work yet, but yes, that’s the idea. Two [productions] in a row.”

The Australian beauty is being eyed up for Ivan Turgenev’s comedy ‘A Month In The Country’, which would see her play Natalya, a mercurial wife of a wealthy Russian estate owner who falls in love with her son’s tutor but is knocked back after she discovers her ward has also developed feelings for the young man.

The flame-haired beauty is also hopeful that her second project will come together, but remained tight-lipped on the title of the play and details about her potential role.

She explained: ”I see so many plays in London, Sydney and New York, and I’m mindful that it’s been a long time, but life and other work have conspired to keep me away.

”But I’m determined to make at least one of the proposals work. Who knows? Both of the proposals might come together.”

Nicole is planning to move with her husband Keith Urban and their two daughters Sunday, five, and Faith, three, to London from the US if she secures her West End deal.
