The internet is thirsting hard for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s new professors

The Pokémon Company recently released the latest trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, revealing new Pokémon, a co-op mechanic, its November 18th launch date and most importantly, its two new professors.

Unlike previous Pokémon titles, you’ll have a different professor depending on if you play Scarlet or Violet. Professor Sada is exclusive to Scarlet and Professor Turo is exclusive to Violet. Professor Sada, whose name is short for ‘pasada’– the Spanish word for pasta — wears more prehistoric clothing à la Flintstones, whereas Professor Turo, whose name is short for ‘futuro’ — the Spanish word for future — is in gear that looks more futuristic.

While cool, what’s more interesting is the thirsty reaction on social media to the new professors — which is entirely understandable.

Below are a few notable takes on Professor Turo and Sada.

Pokémon Violet and Scarlet will release on November 18th, exclusive to the Nintendo Switch.

New Pokémon Scarlet and Violet trailer reveals classic gameplay and four-player co-op

The latest Pokémon Scarlet/Violet trailer has dropped, revealing a more comprehensive look at the new game’s map, characters and more. The trailer even finally reveals the upcoming title’s new legendary Pokémon

The trailer suggests that Scarlet and Violet game will play out similarly to 2019’s Sword and Shield , but with a few modern touches brought over from Pokémon Arceus Legends, such as sneaking and being able to move around freely in an expansive 3D space.

Some fans of the series believe that this new Pokémon realm is based in Spain or South America, and the landscape in the new trailer does seem to add up to that.

Another modern feature that’s being brought into Pokémon Scarlet/Violet is four-player online co-op. Previous entries have offered some form of a multiplayer battling system, but the new co-operative play should add a fun new wrinkle that takes the raiding mechanics from Sword and Shield to the next level.

You can watch the trailer below and keep your eye out to see all the new Pokémon that are revealed.

PlayStation to hold State of Play on June 2 with a peek at some PSVR 2 titles

PlayStation is holding a ‘State of Play’ on Thursday, June 2nd that will last for 30 minutes.

According to the PlayStation Blog, the event will show some reveals from Sony’s third-party partners and a sneak peek at several games in development for PlayStation VR 2 (PSVR 2), the company’s upcoming virtual reality headset.

The event will be available on Twitch and YouTube starting from 6 pm ET/3pm PT.

PlayStation held its last State of Play in March, so it’s been months since we’ve seen what Sony has in store.

Sony announced PSVR 2 during its CES 2022 keynote back in January.

On Thursday, in a ‘Game & Network Services Segment’ investor presentation by the company’s president and CEO Jim Ryan, Sony revealed that the PSVR 2 will feature an enhanced 4K resolution with an expanded filed of view, new sensory features, upgrades visual fidelity and enhancing tracking controls. Further, the device will come with “new controller[s] with great ergonomics, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.”

The CEO also revealed that at launch PSVR 2 will support 20+  “major first-party and third-party titles,” including the previously announced Horizon: Call of the Mountain spinoff.

Previous rumours indicate that due to supply chain issues we won’t see PSVR 2 until 2023.

Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming stick is codenamed ‘Keystone’

For several years now, rumours have circulated regarding Microsoft’s plans to release an Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming stick similar to Google’s Chromecast device.

According to Windows Central, the device is currently codenamed “Keystone” internally at Microsoft. The publication first spotted the name in an Xbox OS list.

Windows Central says that the device will connect to a TV or monitor via HDMI and that it runs Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass and its Cloud Gaming service. This means that rather than featuring onboard hardware, the device will stream games and other content over an internet connection. The publication says that the tech giant could create more versions of the streaming stick before its final release.

In a statement to Windows Central, Microsoft acknowledged the existence of Keystone but says that it still needs more work before it’s ready to be released.

“Our vision for Xbox Cloud Gaming is unwavering, our goal is to enable people to play the games they want, on the devices they want, anywhere they want. As announced last year, we’ve been working on a game-streaming device, codename Keystone, that could be connected to any TV or monitor without the need for a console,” said a Microsoft spokesperson to Windows Central.

Though it’s still unconfirmed, Keystone will likely run a light version of Windows or the Xbox Series X/S’s operating system. It’s unclear when the device will be officially revealed, but it’s unlikely that we’ll see it at Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox and Bethesda Showcase on June 12th.

It makes sense for Microsoft to release a dedicated Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming stick as the company pushes its “play anywhere” narrative through Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. While I already own an Xbox Series X, I could see myself buying a Keystone for my television in the living room if I don’t feel like gaming in my office.

I haven’t really gamed in two months, and it’s been great

2022 has been a great year for games so far.

Horizon Forbidden WestElden RingKirby and the Forgotten LandSifuTunic and Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga are just some of the many well-received titles that we’ve gotten.

And yet, I haven’t yet felt compelled to play most of them, or even tackle my ever-growing backlog.

For me, it can sometimes be overwhelming when there’s so much to play, as my tastes are quite varied. I often want to play almost every big game released in the year, both for personal enjoyment and because I follow and cover the industry extensively. But I’ve also come to realize that this is unrealistic, and my big epiphany came when I was playing Elden Ring in late February. I really enjoyed my 12-ish hours with the game, but seeing so many people I know put insane amounts of time into it — like, 100 hours in the first couple of weeks — honestly made the prospect of playing more feel off-putting. In fact, I soon found myself not really playing much else. In March, I reviewed Ghostwire: Tokyo and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin — two decidedly flawed games that I still enjoyed, largely due to their smaller scopes — and since haven’t played anything, outside of a couple of random Super Smash Bros. Ultimate matches online.

And you know what? I’ve loved my time away. Now, gaming will always be my favourite form of entertainment, but you never want too much of a good thing. Why force yourself to play if you’re just not feeling it? Instead, I’ve spent much more time on other hobbies, and it’s been wonderful. I apparently have watched around 80 movies this year (Everything Everywhere All At Once supremacy!), and I’ve enjoyed using the Letterboxd app to pen more personal, long-form pieces about films that wouldn’t make sense for MobileSyrup.

I’ve also been checking out more TV shows, including Severance (my most pleasant surprise of the yar), the latest season of Better Call Saul (as outstanding as expected) and, for the first time, Kim’s Convenience. It was especially enjoyable to finally catch up on that Canadian comedy series ahead of reading star Simu Liu’s new memoir, We Were Dreamers, which is a thoroughly entertaining, heartfelt, sincere and relatable look at one family’s inspiring immigrant journey and eventual reconciliation. Then, of course, there are all of the non-entertainment activities like going to the gym more (#COVIDWeight) and seeing friends and family. The past two months have been rad.

That’s why I find it so funny when people complain about game delays. If you really want a new game to play, there are still so many others from 2022 and previous years. But better still: why not try taking a break from the medium? I saw someone tweet that they’ve been searching for games to “grab” them, and on some level, I get that. I’m sure I’ll love Elden Ring eventually, but for now, it just wasn’t grabbing me. But what it did do was help me realize that I was just burnt out on games in general, and that’s fine! Taking some time away from something only helps you appreciate it even more.

It’s exactly what Doctor Mario ordered as we approach the crazy, eventful month for gaming that is June. Now, my interest in actually playing games has been completely reinvigorated. I’m excited to finally dive into Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, which I’ve been putting off for months, as well as 2022 releases like Lego Star Wars and Tunic.

So if you’re like me and haven’t quite felt into gaming lately or even just find the number of games to play daunting, maybe try stepping away for a bit. It can be really refreshing, and it makes your eventual return to games all the sweeter.

Valve’s latest Steam Deck update could make the handheld’s fans quieter

In a recent blog post, Valve outlined how SteamOS 3.2 beta improves the Steam Deck’s fan curve and increases its max volume.

Though it’s unclear when the final version of this beta update will be available, Valve making the Steam Deck’s fans quieter is definitely a good thing. I’ve been very impressed with the portable, but its fans are ridiculously noisy. For example, if I’m using the handheld beside my partner, she can hear the high-pitched whine.

I’ve yet to install the update on my Steam Deck, but hopefully, it mitigates this issue.

The complete list of updates can be found below:

  • Updated fan controller — now smarter, more stable, and quieter overall
  • Performance HUD now shows a more accurate reading of VRAM used (previously would cap out at 1G used)
  • Added more internal resolution options for games to choose from
  • Fixed gain staging, resulting in higher max volume and removing white noise coming through 3.5mm jack with some headphones.
  • Fixed PipeWire and Steam failing to elevate their thread priorities
  • Fixed the language dropdown in the Warframe launcher

The Steam Deck is far from perfect, but the near-weekly rate Valve is releasing updates for the portable is impressive. Check out my in-depth look at the handheld for more on the Steam Deck.
