PS5 Variable Refresh Rate support is rolling out globally this week

Sony has announced that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support is rolling out globally to the Playstation 5 this week.

PC and Monitors with HDMI 2.1 VRR will dynamically sync the display’s refresh rate to the PS5 console graphical output.

VRR support improves performance for PS5 games and eliminates visual artifacts, such as pacing issues and screen tearing.

In the coming weeks, the PS5 version of these titles will get a patch get that enables VRR support.

  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

When you’ve received the update, VRR will automatically be enabled for the above games if your PS5 is connected to an HDMI 2.1 VRR compatible TV or PC monitor. If you’re not a fan, you can turn it off under “Screen and Video” in system settings.

You can also apply VRR to PS5 games that don’t support it, but this might result in unexpected visual effects.

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer reportedly could have been a hero shooter

Despite offering one of the most solid Halo multiplayer entries in years on a base gameplay level, Halo Infinite still suffers from several issues ranging from weapon balancing to an extreme lack of content.

While some of those problems will likely be solved when Halo Infinite Season 2 Lone Wolves launches on May 3rd, a new report indicates that 343 Industries’ shooter could have been a significant departure for the long-running arena shooter series.

According to a tweet from podcaster Chris Ray Gun, 343 Industries reportedly spent “a lot of the budget” for Halo infinite on an “Overwatch clone.” Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier backed up this claim in a recent Reddit post, but says that it’s unclear when the team switch to the more traditional arena format for Infinite.

“I don’t remember exactly when they switched to the current version (and the tweet linked here seems exaggerated to the point where it’s mostly false) but I can confirm that they were working on various hero-based prototypes. In fact, I think there were both PVP and PVE prototypes built,” writes Schreier in a recent Reddit post.

This doesn’t mean that we won’t see a less traditional Halo Infinite multiplayer mode appear at some point, however. Certain Affinity, a studio with offices in Austin Texas and Toronto, recently confirmed that it’s playing a greater role in the game’s ongoing development. Many believe that this announcement is tied to Infinite’s rumoured battle royale-like mode codenamed “Tanaka.”

Halo Infinite went through a notoriously rough development cycle and the game’s post-release content schedule has been far less than stellar. For example, after being delayed several times, 343 Industries recently confirmed that the game’s campaign co-op feature won’t arrive until August.

Nintendo repair centre received ‘thousands’ of broken Switch Joy-Cons weekly

Workers at a Nintendo third-party repair facility were reportedly overwhelmed by repairs related to Joy-Con drift, according to a report from Kotaku.

A former supervisor at New York-based United Radio, a company that works with Nintendo to repair the Japanese gaming giant’s broken devices, told Kotaku that the massive number of repairs resulted in a “very stressful” work environment and that “lots of” mistakes were made as a result.

The report goes on to state that “easily thousands” of Joy-Cons passed through United Radio every week.

Joy-Con drift causes controller input when the user isn’t actually touching the joystick, resulting in on-screen action the user doesn’t intend. Nintendo launched a free Joy-Con drift repair program and extended the Switch’s warranty back in 2019, but the problem continues to persist, even with the recently released OLED model.

To be clear, Nintendo is the intermediary in this situation and acts as the middleman. That said, United Radio was reportedly forced to hire temporary workers to keep up with the Joy-Con repair demand. Kotaku’s source that broken Joy-Cons from 2018 to 2018 were just replaced, but controllers after that time period were required to be repaired at a rate of 90 percent within four days of receiving them.

Back in August 2021, MobileSyrup contributor Colton Politte outlined what the Switch Joy-Con repair process is like in Canada, detailing that the process is mostly swift and straightforward on the consumer side of things.

Strangely, I’ve yet to encounter Joy-Con drift with the Switch or Switch OLED model, though I’m sure now that I’ve written those words, at least one pair of my trust gamepads will experience drift.

In other Nintendo-related news, a former employee recently accused the company of firing them for attempting to unionize.

Reddit user is making an 8-bit Elden Ring ‘demake’

An Elden Ring player is working on a demake of the popular action RPG.

Reddit user Shin shared their plans for a “demake” on the game’s subreddit, showcasing the 8-bit Game Boy era visual style.

Shin goes on to say that the game will work on real Game Boy hardware.

I’m making an Elden Ring demake for the Game Boy! It will work on real hardware! from Eldenring

The short video shows the player starting out in Elden Ring’s ruined chapel and fighting the first boss, the Grafted Scion, and getting very quickly demolished. The character uses familiar rolling and sword attacks, staple Elden Ring combat moves. And like the actual game, after dying, that oh-so-familiar ‘You Died’ screen appears.

Shin is using GB Studio 3.0 to create the demake. They say that they plan to launch the Limgrave area of the demake by the end of May, but you can follow along with the development progress on their Twitch channel.

New PlayStation Plus slated for June 13 release in North America

Last month, Sony unveiled its new PlayStation Plus game subscription service, and now we’re finally learning more about what games will be part of the platform and when it releases.

The service is poised to launch in North America on June 13th this year. While that date is fast approaching, Canadian pricing still hasn’t been released. MobileSyrup has reached out to PlayStation Canada multiple times for more information regarding PlayStation Plus pricing.

Sony’s PlayStation Plus platform is available in three tiers: ‘Plus Essential,’ ‘Plus Extra’ and ‘Plus Premium.’

PlayStation Plus Essential, the first tier of the new subscription, is the same as the current PlayStation Plus offering. It includes online multiplayer access, two monthly downloadable games, discounts, and cloud storage for saved games.

The next tier, PlayStation Plus Extra, offers the same benefits as Plus Essential along with a catalogue of up to 400 PS4 and PS5 games that PlayStation owners can download and play. Sony says the 400 titles include “blockbuster hits” from the PlayStation Studios catalogue and from third-party partners. However, it’s not clear if subscribers will get day-one access to new titles from Sony.

The third and final tier, PlayStation Plus Premium, includes everything from the previous two tiers, along with up to 340 more games and PS3 titles available via cloud streaming. This tier also offers a catalogue of “beloved classic games” from the original PlayStation, PS2, and PSP available both through streaming and download options.

U.S. pricing starts at $99.99 ($roughly $125 CAD)  yearly for Plus Extra and $119.99 (roughly $150 CAD) for Plus Premium. It’s assumed that Plus Essential will cost the same as it does now, $69.99 CAD ($59.99 USD).

Sony says that Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Returnal and more will be available at launch.

You can learn more about the service, here.

Sony now lets you update the PS5’s DualSense controller on PC

Sony has released a Windows app that allows PC users to update the PS5’s DualSense controller.

The app, titled “Firmware updater for DualSense wireless controller,” can be downloaded from PlayStation’s website.

Until now, you needed a PS5 to update the DualSense, which didn’t exactly help those looking to use the gamepad on PC, where it’s been compatible since the PS5 launched in 2020. As is the case on PS5, users will need to connect the DualSense to their PC with a USB cable to complete the update.

It makes sense that PlayStation is streamlining the process on PC. Over the past couple of years, the company has been investing more heavily in the platform through such PlayStation console game ports as Horizon Zero DawnGod of WarDays Gone and Uncharted: The Legacy of Thieves CollectionPlayStation Now, the company’s game streaming service, is also available on PC.

Sony is reportedly planning to introduce ads in free-to-play PlayStation games

Sony is reportedly planning to bring ads to PlayStation games, according to a new Business Insider report. Sony is reportedly planning to make this move to incentivize developers to continue developing free-to-play titles for its consoles by allowing further monetization.

Additionally, the report indicates that Sony hasn’t yet decided whether it will take a cut of this ad revenue or if the company will charge partners for access to data regarding consumer behaviour in PlayStation games.

Sony currently only tests software that allows developers to create in-game ads.

“The goal is for the ads to appear like they’re part of the game, like digital billboards in sports stadiums,” the report claims. “Formats could include ads that give viewers rewards for watching ads and promotions for in-game items like avatar skins.”

A recent report indicates that Microsoft is also looking to introduce ads to free-to-play Xbox games. Microsoft could introduce this program as soon as Q3 2022.
