Video games could enhance reading skills: Canadian study

Playing video games could improve reading skills, according to a new Canadian study.

Shaylyn Kress, a University of Saskatchewan (U of S) psychology graduate student, led a research team to investigate how gaming might affect reading. As part of this study, the team analyzed the most popular types of games and looked at each one to determine the number of objects that players had to react to. These were judged based on their placement: peripherally (the side, bottom or top of the screen) versus the middle of the screen.

From there, participants of varying levels of experience playing games were instructed to read flashing words in one of eight possible places on the screen. These were a mix of well-known, simple words and fake words that needed to be sounded out to read.

Ultimately, the study found that the more successful participants were those who played more games. The reasoning, per the research team, is that exposure to peripheral demands seems to exercise visual attention systems in the brain that are needed for reading skills.

Speaking to Saskatoon’s StarPhoenix, Kress added that, per the findings, participants with more gaming experience may be able to read known words and sound out new words more quickly than those who don’t often play.

Of course, one research team’s findings don’t immediately prove that gaming can benefit reading, but it’s an interesting case study nonetheless. Given that the overwhelming majority of kids play games (89 percent of those aged 6-17, per the Entertainment Software Association of Canada), it would certainly be good if the medium improved reading skills.

Montreal-based Motive’s Dead Space remake releasing in early 2023

Montreal-based Motive’s remake of Dead Space will arrive in “early 2023,” according to a recent livestream from the studio.

The Electronic Arts’ studio also detailed how it’s improving original Dead Space’s already excellent audio, including the noise Isaac Clarke’s Plasma Cutter makes, and other notable features like his breathing and heart rate.

Interestingly, Clarke’s dialogue will shift based on how tired the character is through a new ‘Intelligent Dialogue’ system that features three variations: ‘Normal,’ ‘Fatigued’ and ‘Injure.’

The remake of 2008’s Dead Space was announced last July. The survival horror title is regarded widely as one of the best titles released in the genre. It focuses Clarke’s fight to stay alive onboard a mysteriously empty mining starship called the USG Ishimura.

Though I played Dead Space on the Xbox 360 back when it was first released, beyond its absolutely terrifying enemies and spooky spaceship atmosphere, I remember very little about the title beyond the fact that I really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to diving into this remake.

The Dead Space remake is set to come to Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5 and PC.

Ontario launches $1 million post-secondary scholarship program for esports

The Ontario Government has announced plans to launch a post-secondary scholarship program tied to the burgeoning esports industry.

In a press release, the government outlined that it has set aside $1 million over two years for the scholarship that aims to offer financial assistance to students attending programs related to game development, design, marketing and more.

“As the first province in Canada to recognize the educational value of esports design and development in this way, we will support students who are building skills that can lead to discoveries, innovation, training opportunities and economic benefits for Ontario,” said Colleges and Universities Minister Jill Dunlop.

“This investment will help students pursue their passion and prepare for careers in the highly lucrative video game and esports sector, and to develop transferable skills valued by employers across countless industries.”

The government of Ontario says that the program will be available to publically supported colleges and universities.

According to the Entertainment Software Association of Canada (ESAC), the Canadian gaming industry has grown 23 percent since 2019 to contribute $5.5 billion to the country’s total GDP. There are also now 937 active game studios in Canada, a 35 percent increase over 2019.

Valve’s Steam Deck can now run Windows

Valve’s Steam Deck is a work in progress when it comes to features and game compatibility, but the latest update has been hotly anticipated: Windows 10 compatibility.

Regardless of how impressive it is that the portable gaming device can play new releases like Elden Ring, Windows compatibility is a significant step to getting more games on the Steam Deck.

But don’t get too excited. This doesn’t necessarily mean Microsoft’s growing library of Xbox Game Pass titles will suddenly run on Valve’s handheld. An agreement like this would likely be more complex and might not include notable Xbox titles like Halo Infinite.

According to a blog post from Valve, the Steam Deck now has GPU, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Windows drivers, which are required to play and download titles. Unfortunately, there aren’t audio drivers yet, so the Steam Deck’s speakers won’t work when running Windows 10. USB-C and Bluetooth earbuds/headphones are viable alternative until Windows audio drivers hit the device.

Installing Windows requires also a complete wipe of the Steam Deck’s internal storage, and there’s no way to dual-boot SteamOS and Microsoft’s operating system. Further, The Verge points out that the Steam Deck’s BIOS doesn’t currently support TPM, which is required to install Windows 11.

Hopefully, Windows 10 hitting the Steam Deck is a precursor to a partnership between Valve and Microsoft that brings Xbox Game Pass to the handheld. On the plus side, both Valve founder Gabe Newell and Xbox head Phil Spencer are at least interested in exploring the possibility.

I’ll have a review of the Steam Deck up on MobileSyrup in the coming weeks.

Activision confirms Call of Duty: Warzone is coming to mobile

Activision has officially confirmed that Call of Duty: Warzone is coming to mobile.

Notably, the announcement came via a tweet from the official Activision Twitter account about job postings.

Specific details on the battle royale game weren’t provided, although the wording in Activision’s blog post — an “all-new, AAA mobile experience” and “built natively for mobile” — suggests it will be standalone and different from the console and PC version of Warzone.

That said, Call of Duty Mobile still offers a robust, fully-featured multiplayer suite that’s quite similar to its console/PC peers. COD Mobile also has its own battle royale mode which draws inspiration from the mainline games but is otherwise its own experience.

Notably, one of the studios that Activision lists are hiring for the untitled Warzone mobile game is Beenox, the Quebec City-based team behind Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered. The Canadian developer has also helped out on other COD titles, including 2019’s Modern Warfare and 2020’s Cold War.

A release window for the mobile game wasn’t revealed, but we do know that a new Warzone title for consoles and PC and a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare are set to release sometime this year. No gameplay has been shown from either title.

The bigger question surrounding Activision, however, pertains to how it handles its ongoing controversies. With Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard facing investigations and regulatory approval, all eyes are on the Call of Duty maker and its alleged toxic workplace environment. Last year, the company was sued by California over allegations of a “frat boy culture,” which CEO Bobby Kotick reportedly tried to cover up. More than 1,000 employees soon called for Kotick to step down, although he’s set to remain with the company through the Microsoft acquisition and receive a massive payout.

N64’s F-Zero X comes to Switch Online’s ‘Expansion Pack’ on March 11th

F-Zero X is racing onto the Nintendo’s Switch Online’ Expansion Pack’ subscription tier on Friday, March 11th.

The game was originally released back in 1998 as the sequel to Super Nintendo (SNES) racing game F-Zero X. Though it’s not the greatest looking title, it ran at 60fps and supported 30 AI racers competing simultaneously, which at the time was a technical achievement.

F-Zero X is the thirteenth game to hit Switch Online’s Expansion Pack tier. Last month, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask hit the streaming service, with Pokémon Snap, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Mario Golf arriving in the coming months.

Though several N64 games ran poorly on the Switch when they first launched, Nintendo has made moves to improve their emulation over the last few weeks. For example, fog has finally returned to The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

Nintendo’s ‘Expansion Pack’ online tier costs $63.99 for a 12-month individual membership (one account) or $99.99 for a 12-month Family Membership (up to eight accounts).

PlayStation’s next State of Play streams March 9th

Sony’s next PlayStation ‘State of Play’ presentation will stream this Wednesday, March 9th at 5pm ET/2pm PT.

Though it’s unclear what we’ll see during the event, PlayStation mentions that the presentation will feature “new reveals and eye-catching updates for PS5 and PS4 titles.”

In a blog post surrounding the event, Sony says that the keynote will highlight “…great games coming from some of our beloved Japanese publishers, though we’ll have a few updates from other developers located around the world, too.”

Beyond this, Sony also mentions that we won’t see anything related to PlayStation VR2 titles during this particular State of Play.

Similar to past State of Play streams, you’ll be able to watch the presentation on Sony’s Twitch and YouTube channels. It’s likely the live stream will offer a look at Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 16.

Previous events have focused on Gran Turismo 7 and Ghostwire Tokyo.

MobileSyrup will have comprehensive coverage surrounding the event tomorrow evening.
