Netflix is making a BioShock movie

Netflix and Take-Two Interactive are working on a BioShock movie.

However, beyond that the film is coming, nothing else is known about the movie. In fact, the project doesn’t even have a writer or director yet, though the partnership between the two companies has been in the works for almost a year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Though it’s a running joke on the MobileSyrup team that I’m not a big fan of the BioShock series despite what my glowing preview coverage of BioShock Infinite from several years might indicate (thanks for deleting it from the internet, Postmedia), the first entry in the series remains one of the most critically acclaimed first-person shooters of all time.

However, this isn’t the first time a Bioshock film has surfaced. Roughly 12 years ago, Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was tied to a movie based on the series. It’s also worth noting that films based on video games rarely end up being even close to as good as their video game counterparts, with Detective Pikachu and the Sonic The Hedgehog movie being two recent exceptions.

That said, a Bioshock movie could be one of the few to buck this long-running trend.

Nintendo Canada shows off chocolate Joy-Cons for Valentine’s Day

Have you ever gazed at your Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con controllers and thought to yourself, “this looks delicious?”

No? Neither have I, but that hasn’t stopped Nintendo from turning its iconic gamepads into chocolate.

Unfortunately, these chocolate Joy-Cons aren’t real, which is good because if you tried playing Super Smash Bros with these controllers, they’d melt.

That said, they’re pretty cool and look like they’d make a great snack.

Cyberpunk 2077’s anticipated current-gen console update could arrive soon

Despite Cyberpunk 2077 being a near-absolute mess when it was first released back in 2022, CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has continued to support the beleaguered open-world title with several patches.

However, the game’s anticipated current-gen Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 update hasn’t yet appeared, though it seems that might change soon.

Back in October CDPR delayed all fixes and free DLC for Cyperpunk 2077, stating that a “major update” would arrive in 2022 alongside its current-gen/next-gen “enhanced” update. Fast-forward to now and the developer revealed in a tweet that it’s set to make an announcement on Tuesday, February 15th at 10am ET/7am PT.

Adding to this rumour, Cyberpunk 2077 now shows up as “optimized” on the Xbox Series X/S, and a PS5 edition of the title appeared on Sony’s PlayStation Network back in January. The enhanced update also seems to already be hitting some players’ consoles.

The enhanced update will be free to anyone that already owns the Xbox One/PlayStation 4 version of the title. CDPR is also expected to release an upgraded version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for the Xbox Series X/PlaySation 5, though it likely won’t release until Q2 2022.

Pre-registration opens for Square Enix Montreal’s Hitman Sniper: The Shadows

Ahead of its March 3rd release, Square Enix Montreal’s Hitman Sniper: The Shadows is now available for pre-registration on Android and iOS.

The upcoming mobile title — which was first revealed last year in early March — draws inspiration from 2015’s Hitman: Sniper, but is an entirely new title set in the Hitman universe. Pre-registration unlocked yet-to-be-revealed exclusive rewards, likely in-game currency and other items.

Alongside Lara Croft Go and Deus Ex Go, Hitman Go is widely regarded as one of the best premium mobile titles ever. Back in 2018, Square Enix confirmed that it was shifting focus to free-to-play mobile titles like the upcoming Hitman Sniper: The Shadows.

Though it remains unclear, hopefully, The Shadows manages to still be a great title despite its focus on free-to-play mechanics.

For more on Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, check out Brad Shankar’s interview with Patrick Naud, the head of mobile at Square Enix Montreal.

Pre-registration is currently only available on Android through this link.

Pokémon meets Wordle with ‘Squirdle’ where you have to guess the Pokémon

I love Wordle, but it looks like I might have a new favourite word puzzle game. Pokémon die-hards will be pleased to learn about Squirdle, a letter-based guessing game that’s a spin on the Wordle puzzle concept.

In Squirdle, you have to guess the correct Pokémon out of all 898 Pocket Monsters. The game doesn’t use blocks for letters, though. Instead, the blocks represent the following: generation, elemental type 1, elemental type 2, height/weight, in that order.

Green means you guessed the correct Pokémon, red means you’re wrong and up and down arrows represent newer, smaller or lighter. Yellow also means you managed to get one of the two types correct.

Below is an example of a Squirdle game board:

While I have pretty extensive knowledge of Pokémon, finding the correct one out of all 898 is no easy task.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is getting 48 new courses by the end of 2023

In a surprise move, Nintendo didn’t reveal Mario Kart 9 during its latest Direct stream — instead, the Japanese gaming giant confirmed that 48 new courses are coming to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The first wave of courses is set to arrive on March 18th and all 48 tracks will drop by the end of 2023 in six waves. I also use the word “new” lightly given that it seems all of these tracks are pulled from past Mario Kart titles.

The first wave of tracks includes courses like Coconut Mall from Mario Kart for the Wii, Choco Mountain from Mario Kart 64, and Tokyo Blur from Mario Kart Tour. All DLC tracks will be playable locally and online.

The ‘Booster Course Pass’ costs $25 on its own and is also included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass at no additional cost. Nintendo’s Switch Online Expansion pass tier costs  $63.99 for a 12-month individual membership (one account) or $99.99 for a 12-month Family Membership (up to eight accounts).

Mario Kart 8 released roughly seven and a half years ago for the Wii U, followed by the Deluxe version dropping on the Switch in 2017.
