Consumers around the world spend a lot of time using mobile apps: study

Consumers in five countries reportedly spend roughly five hours a day on mobile apps, and consumers in 12 major markets in the world spend more than four hours per day (see the chart above), according to mobile data and analytics firm App Annie.

App Annie estimates that people have about five hours of leisure per day. With this in mind, the fact that Indonesians spend about 5.5 hours per day using mobile apps, is pretty incredible.

TikTok is one of the standout apps with being the most downloaded app in more than three territories, and according to App Annie, it’s the only platform to show up in the top five lists in all nine countries. Even as a relatively new TikTok user, I can already see how easy it would be to spend five hours per day using just that social media platform.

Game-wise Pokémon Unite was the standout title in South Korea, but worldwide, My Talking Angela 2 is the number one downloaded game in Q3 of 2021. This is followed by Free Fire, Count Masters, PUBG Mobile and Bridge Race.

Canada isn’t on the top list of players.

Animal Crossing’s Happy Home Paradise DLC lets you design homes for visitors

Happy Home Paradise, Animal Crossing: New Horizons first paid DLC, allows players to meet vacationing NPCs, learn their decoration preferences and then lets you start building them a new custom home.

The DLC is focused on players working for Lottie’s Paradise Planning business. During the New Horizons-focused Direct, Nintendo showed off how players will be able to select different lighting options, use different-sized countertops and generally change nearly everything about a home’s interior.

The game will also suggest different items to the player to better pull together a home’s design. Other new features in the DLC include fixing up Lottie’s island with new buildings, including a restaurant and school. The paid DLC arrives on November 5th alongside a free update that includes the return of Brewster, Kapp’n and Harriet and additional farming and cooking recipes.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Happy Home Paradise costs $32.99. It’s also part of Nintendo’s $63.99 ‘Expansion Pack’ online subscription tier that includes N64 and Sega Genesis titles.

Nintendo’s Switch Online N64 and Sega Genesis games cost $64 for 12 months in Canada

After revealing that N64 and Sega Genesis titles were coming to its Switch Online services through an ‘Expansion Pack‘ subscription tier a few weeks ago, Nintendo has confirmed pricing and availability for the service.

An Individual Membership costs $63.99 for 12 months, while a Family Membership costs $99.99 for 12 months. The service officially launches on October 25th. This is a significant jump in subscription pricing from Switch Online’s current $24.99 yearly cost that includes NES/SNES games and cloud saves.

The additional subscription tier gives players access to retro Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis titles. For example, Mario Kart 64, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Mario Tennis, Super Mario 64 and more are coming to the N64 catalogue. Nintendo has confirmed that games like Banjo-Kazooie, Pokémon Snap, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and Paper Mario are coming in the future.

On the Genesis side, notable titles like Shinobi III, Streets of Rage 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Golden Axe, Eco the Dolphin and more are coming to the platform.

While expensive, this moves the cost of Switch Online more in line with Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus.

During its presentation today, Nintendo also confirmed that the Expansion Pack cost includes Animal Crossing: New Horizons‘ upcoming DLC, Happy Home Paradise.

In other Switch-related news, Nintendo’s N64 and Genesis gamepads are now available to order in Canada for $64.99 each.

Microsoft’s $99 Xbox Series X mini fridge is coming to Canada

What started as a joke, has somehow actually become a reality.

Microsoft has confirmed that its Xbox Series X mini fridge will launch in December 2021 with pre-orders releasing on October 19th. In an Xbox blog post, the tech giant details that the Series X-shaped fridge will cost $99.99 USD (roughly $122 CAD).

In the U.S., the fridges exclusive retailer is Target, and in Canada, would-be Series X fridge buyers will be able to purchase it online through Target.com (no one tell Zellers).

Target.com currently doesn’t offer shipping to Canada through its website, so it’s strange the company is the exclusive retailer of the mini fridge in Canada.

The fridge will also be sold in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Netherlands and Poland.

While undeniably silly, it’s incredible to see Microsoft take the joke that the Series X looks like a fridge joke this far.

Alienware celebrates 25th anniversary by showing off new Aurora gaming PC

Today marks Alienware’s 25th birth anniversary, and since its inception back in 1996, the company has led the industry in high-performance gaming PCs and peripherals.

To commemorate the occasion, Alienware is making its beloved Aurora gaming PC “Bigger, Better and Cooler,” with beefier specs and, for the first time, an optional, scratch-resistant, and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) protected transparent side panel.

The new Alienware Aurora features an open-air design with reorganized internal components for better ventilation, less noise, cleaner cable management and ease of accessibility, allowing users to easily swap out or upgrade internal components like the memory, hard drive, graphics card (GPU), etc.

According to the company, the open-air design clears 50 percent extra chassis space, resulting in more efficient airflow and less noise, “all while providing a 5 percent increase in graphics performance.” It’s worth noting that the five percent increase is in comparison to the Aurora R12, with both desktops running Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3090 GPU.

Further, every (new) Aurora PC will ship with two 120mm fans, one for front air intake and one for rear exhaust. However, if you want to spend big bucks, higher-end configurations of the PC will ship with a third and fourth pre-installed fan, taking advantage of the ’50 percent extra chassis space.’

According to Alienware, the new Aurora is up to nine percent quieter than its predecessor during CPU-intensive workloads, and CPU temperatures have been measured as being up to three percent lower.

The new Aurora PC also brings several external changes, including a curvy aesthetic case, which will be available in ‘Lunar Light’ and ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ colour options, along with a transparent left-side panel that lets you see inside the gaming PC. AlienFX’s configurable lighting capabilities have more than doubled. The old Aurora R12 desktop could only have four externally facing lighting zones, while the new Aurora will offer up to 8 lighting zones and different internal ambient lighting features.

The case also features tool-less entry from all sides, further making the machine a highly accessible one.

Alienware says the new Aurora’s pricing, configurations and availability will be announced later this fall. The company is also hosting an ‘Alienware Live Stream Event‘ today at 3pm ET/12pm PT, where it will detail the new Aurora PCs.

Fortnite acknowledges Innersloth as inspiration behind Among Us game mode

Nearly two months after release, Epic Games has finally decided to credit Innersloth’s Among Us as the inspiration behind Fortnite’s ‘Impostors Mode.’

The Fortnite ‘Imposters Mode’ was released in August and was developed in traditional Fortnite settings and 3D environments, but substantially drawing from Among Us’ gameplay and mechanics.

At the time, Epic Games did not acknowledge Among Us or Innersloth as the inspiration behind the game mode, prompting members of Innersloth’s crew to call out Fortnite about having their work duplicated without acknowledgment or credit.

But today’s Twitter thread conversation between @FortniteGame and @AmongUsGame makes it clear that there is no bad blood between the two companies, and hints that they might collaborate “on something fun” in the near future.

Forza Horizon 5 is a powerful return for the sandbox racing series

Playground Games’ upcoming Forza Horizon 5 drops players in the middle of a Mexico-set rich, sprawling open-world map. I had the chance to go hands-on with a preview of the game, and in the short time I spent racing down its winding roads and tracks, I’ve become enamoured with what Horizon 5 offers.

I’ve never been a car enthusiast by any stretch of the imagination, but I’ve always adored the Forza Horizon series. It consistently scratches that racing itch but never takes itself too seriously. With each subsequent entry in the series, Playground Games outdoes itself while maintaining the balance between authenticity and more arcade-style racing.

Along with playing roughly 90-minutes of Forza Horizon 5’s campaign offline, I also chatted with Playground Games’ creative director, Mike Brown.

Forza Horizon 5 offers a full-fledged campaign packed with the horsepower you’d expect from the series. For example, I could fully customize my driver, including selecting a nickname and changing how my avatar looks, complete with several inclusive options.

“It was an objective we gave ourselves right from the start of game,” says Brown. “We want it [Forza Horizon 5] to be the most inclusive Horizon game yet.” Brown cites specific additions to Forza Horizon 5‘s character creator, including several pronouns and prosthetic options for your driver. “This is just really important to gamers. It’s important people feel they are better represented when they see those options. When everyone is included, everybody wins,” said Brown.

“Playground Games’ Forza Horizon 5 looks stunning running on Microsoft’s Xbox Series X.”

At its core, Forza Horizon 5 plays as you’d expect if you’re familiar with the series. As an up-and-comer in the racing scene, you’ll need to complete competitive circuits and activities to gain ‘Accolades’ to rise through the ranks in the Horizon season. During the preview, I tried out a small portion of events in an early section of the game, including Showcase tasks and the Initial Drive.

Earning Accolades plays directly into how you progress through Forza Horizon 5‘s campaign. Each milestone requires you to achieve a certain amount of Accolades, ranging from completing races to other supplemental activities. They’re also tied to Forza Horizon 5’s exploration.

“There’s a lot of Accolades, which encourage you to get from a particular point to another point on the map within an amount of time,” says Brown. “You’ll see really interesting parts of the map because we’ve picked those out intentionally. It’s like, ‘get from this waterfall to the airstrip in two minutes.’ There are probably a few routes that you can take, but the route you’re likely to pick is going to take you on an awesome drive straight through the jungle.”

From a gameplay perspective, Horizon 5 maintains the series’ tight controls, and not much seems to have changed. That said, similar to past entries in the series, it’s the game’s visuals that stand out.

Playground Games’ Forza Horizon 5 looks stunning running on Microsoft’s Xbox Series X. The amount of detail the game renders in its diverse, open-world is something I’m eager to explore more when the full version launches in a few weeks.

“One of the great things about the Series X and S is the power it gives us to play with light,” says Brown. This is especially apparent as reflections and light from the sun bounce off the game’s several vehicles. While I spent most of my time with Horizon 5 driving the 2021 Ford Bronco Badlands and 2020 GR Supra, there’s an overwhelming level of detail present in the title’s cars. All aspects of the game’s visuals, including the environments, vehicles, lighting and particles, come together to offer a stunning showcase of graphical fidelity.

“…these activities remain a great way to organically discover Forza Horizon 5’s map.”

Forza Horizon 5’s Mexico map features various biomes to explore, including vast deserts, lush forests and even snowy mountains. Brown says Playground Games aims to deliver an authentic representation of Mexico and its diverse environments, including dynamic weather conditions. This means that the game features sandstorms, tropical storms and even snowstorms. For example, during my time with the preview build, I drove head-on into a sandstorm.

“You can be on top of a volcano with snow on your car and go down the side. Before you know it, you’re in the desert where it’s probably like 36 degrees or something. It will start to melt away and become all dusty at that point,” says Brown.

In Forza Horizon 5, the experience is seamless as you drive across the map from one point of interest to the next. At times, I simply drove to see where the road took me.

“The process is one of trying to keep people engaged, but also to distract them. So you want to have it all built out in such a way that they’re never too far away from a landmark or a point of interest.” Also sprinkled throughout the map are ‘Speed Traps,’ ‘Danger Signs’ and ‘PR Stunts.’

These supplemental activities provide Accolades to rank up and challenge players to hit certain scores or time limits. It’s relatively standard fare for experienced Horizon players, though these activities remain a great way to organically discover Forza Horizon 5’s map.

Playground Games says Forza Horizon 5 will feature a total of over 500 vehicles. As a huge Halo fan, I was elated to discover that the series’ iconic Warthog will once again be drivable in the game.

Forza Horizon 5 is an ambitious racing game, and that’s abundantly clear from my short time spent with the title. The game’s Mexico map is the series’ most expansive and detailed yet, and its car list rounds things out to offer what seems set to be an impressive experience that takes full advantage of the Series X’s more powerful hardware.

“Something built into the culture and the DNA at Playground Games is that we honestly aren’t ever really satisfied,” says Brown. “We always just feel like it can be more — I want to make the greatest games. The greatest games. Not the greatest driving games. Why can’t we make the best game?”

Forza Horizon 5 releases on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on November 5th, 2021. The game will also release as part of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass subscription platform.

Tired of GTA V re-releases? Too bad – Rockstar is remastering three classic GTA games

Following months of rumours, Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that remasters of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas are coming to PC (Rockstar Games Launcher), Xbox, PlayStation and even the Nintendo Switch.

It’s unclear when the titles will release or how much they’ll cost, with Rockstar only stating the titles will arrive “later this year.” The HD re-releases of the iconic titles are also coming to iOS and Android in the first half of 2022.

Rockstar hasn’t revealed if these re-releases are just high-resolution remakes or if they feature more significant technical improvements. However, in a press release, the developer says that each title features “across-the-board upgrades including graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements” that still maintain the “classic look and feel of the originals.”

Reading between the lines, it sounds like all three titles will include at least some level of a graphical and gameplay overhaul.

While I have fond memories of playing all three titles as a teenager, I’m not sure these are games I’m interested in diving back into in 2021. At the time, they were highly innovative, but it’s likely that the series’ rigid mission structure — particularly with the ground-breaking GTA III — just hasn’t aged quite as well as some people might think.

Still, it would be great to play GTA III again in what I assume will be 4K 60fps. When I originally played through the title back in 2001 on the PC (I didn’t own a PS2 as a child), the game barely ran on my PC’s 16MB 3D video card and chugged along at a painful 15fps in some cases.

I also look forward to once again shooting GTA San Andreas’ ‘Ryder’ in the face.
