Koodo, Fido, Virgin roll out $60/mo 20GB promo plan

Just a few days after switching plans around with new $60/15GB and $65/20GB plans, the Big Three flanker brands now have a promotional $60/20GB plan.

As of July 29th, Telus’ Koodo, Rogers’ Fido and Bell’s Virgin Plus all list the new, promotional $60/mo 20GB plan that’s available for a limited time. However, none of the providers listed an end date for the promotion at the time of publication.

Moreover, Koodo and Virgin Plus list the $60 plan as a 10GB plan with a bonus 10GB of data, rather than a flat 20GB plan like Fido offers.

The main upside here is that the $60/20GB plan is a better value than the old $65/20GB plan offered by the three providers. However, anyone who just signed up for the $60/15GB plan may want to look into getting this offer for the extra 5GB of data.

Koodo’s $60/20GB promo plan as of July 29th, 2022.

The downside is that all three providers still offer limited plan options for customers. Outside of the $60/20GB plan, Koodo, Fido, and Virgin don’t have many options for customers looking to buy a phone. Koodo, oddly, only offers the $60/20GB option for bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) customers — those looking to buy a phone get to choose between the recently added $60/15GB or $65/20GB plans.

Fido’s $60/20GB promo plan as of July 29th, 2022.

Meanwhile, if you want to buy a phone from Fido, the only plan you can choose is the new, promotional $60/20GB plan. Virgin Plus, similarly, only offers the $60/20GB plan.

Virgin’s $60/20GB promo plan as of July 29th, 2022.

That said, the three providers sometimes offer a $32/mo talk and text plan with select, low-end phones. Still, options remain limited.

Beyond that, the providers offer several CRTC-mandated ‘starter’ plans, but these are only available for BYOP customers, and some come with limitations like being capped at 3G speed.

Ultimately, if you have the budget for a $60/mo plan and need 20GB of data, these new promotional deals could be a good option for you. But you’ll need to move quickly since it’s not clear how long they’ll stick around.

Koodo, Fido, and Virgin Plus bring back $65/20GB plan, add new $60/15GB plan

Flanker brands Koodo, Fido, and Virgin Plus have brought back their $65/20GB plans after removing the options earlier this month.

As a quick recap, the three providers offered limited-time, promotional $65/mo plans with 20GB of data (the plans were actually $65/15GB with a 5GB bonus) back in mid-June. At the time, the three providers said the plans would stick around until July 4th — Koodo actually removed its plan a few days after the deadline.

Now those plans are back on the providers’ websites, although only Virgin Plus labelled the $65/20GB plan as a limited-time offer. Moreover, the plans list a full 20GB of data, not 15GB of data plus an additional 5GB like before. Instead, all three providers now offer a separate $60/mo plan with 15GB of data (again, only Virgin Plus lists that plan as a limited-time offer), which appears to replace a $60/10GB plan.

However, this is where the providers differ — Fido and Virgin don’t offer any other plans beyond their typical suite of CRTC-mandated starter plans. Koodo, however, lists several other plans on its website, including some that probably shouldn’t be there.

First, Koodo has a $55/mo 8GB promo plan. This isn’t new — it’s been around since mid-May. Then it appears Koodo still lists the old versions of its plans, $60/10GB and $65/15GB, alongside the new $60/15GB and $65/20GB plans. As per my testing, I’m able to add both new and old plans to my cart and navigate through the checkout process (although I didn’t complete any transactions since I’m not looking to switch at this time).

Presumably, this is just a glitch on Koodo’s website and it will de-list the old plans soon. Either way, if you’re shopping for a plan, make sure you’re picking the right plan, so you don’t end up paying more than you need to.

Koodo, Fido still offer $65/20GB promo plan slated to end July 4th

Back in mid-June, Koodo, Fido, and Virgin Plus rolled out a promotion that added 5GB of extra monthly data onto each provider’s respective $65/mo 15GB plan, bringing it up to 20GB of monthly data. At the time, all three providers listed the promo as running until July 4th, but only Bell’s Virgin Plus has held to that.

As of July 5th, Virgin Plus no longer lists the $65/20GB promo on its website — instead, it’s back to the $65/mo 15GB plan the provider previously offered.

Virgin Plus $65/15GB plan as of July 5th

Meanwhile, Rogers’ Fido and Telus’ Koodo have removed the July 4th end date from their $65/mo 20GB promotional plans. Both still list the plan as a “limited time offer,” but there’s no longer an end date. In other words, if you wanted to grab this plan and haven’t, now’s probably a good time to get it since it’s not clear how much longer it’ll be available.

Moreover, Koodo and Fido still offer $55/8GB plans, while Virgin Plus does not. These plans aren’t new, but Koodo has listed its $55/8GB option as a “promotion” since discounting it by $1 in May.

Anyway, if you’re looking to get a little extra data for your dollar, now might be the last good chance to get the $65/20GB promo before it’s gone.

Koodo, Fido, Virgin roll out $65/20GB limited-time offer

Koodo, Fido, and Virgin Plus have updated their plan pages with a new limited-time offer: $65/mo for 20GB of data.

The deal essentially adds 5GB of bonus data onto the flanker brands’ existing $65/15GB plans. Both Koodo and Virgin list the offer as running until July 4th, while Fido’s site simply says it’s a “limited time” deal. Interestingly, Fido’s website also says the offer “will appear on your 2nd or 3rd invoice.”

Overall, the new offer isn’t bad. The three flanker brands also offer $60/mo 10GB plans, so an extra $5/mo for double the data is pretty decent.

The $65/20GB plans include, as usual, Canada-wide calling, texting, and other features. You can check out the deal for yourself at the following links:

Also, if you’re a lucky Koodo customer, you may not even need to spring for this offer. Some customers received texts from the carrier in June offering them 5GB of free bonus data on their current plans. You can read more about that here.

Virgin Plus trims down 3G starter plan options

Virgin Plus has removed one of its cheapest started plan options.

The 1GB data plan with 3G speeds is no longer available. It was priced at $28 a month and users had to pay for minutes.

The middle-tier 3G data plan was not the cheapest option the company had to offer. Its 250MB data plan for $15 a month and 3GB data plan for $35 a month are still available.

Bell adds speed caps on its two cheapest wireless plans

Bell has added speed caps on its ‘Essential’ and ‘Lite’ wireless plans, as pointed out by a MobileSyrup reader.

The telecom company confirmed to MobileSyrup that the change was made on April 13th and applies to new customers.

The ‘Lite’ wireless plan costs $55 a month and offers 10GB of data with speeds now capped at 150 Mbps on a 4G network.

The ‘Essential’ plan has 25GB of data for $85 a month. It offers access to their 5G network but it’s important to note this is not the fastest service Bell has to offer. The 25GB plan is only available at speeds up to 250Mbps.

In comparison, Bell lists data access for its ‘Ultimate’ and ‘Ultimate 50’ plans “on their fastest available 5G speeds.” This text is not available under the ‘Essential’ plan.

A similar change was also made on Bell flanker brand Virgin Plus. Their bring your own phone plans have long offered services at 4G speeds. But that service is now capped at speeds up to 150 Mbps.

Bell is following in the footsteps of Telus. The company added speed caps of 250Mbps and 1Gbps on its mobile plans in February.

Thanks James

Virgin Plus hikes the cost of its most affordable plan for the second time in two weeks

Virgin Plus has made its most affordable data plan more expensive.

The company’s pay-per-use data plan now costs $32 a month, a $1 increase.

This is the second time in two weeks the company has increased the plan’s cost.

MobileSyrup reported the plan’s cost rose to $31 on April 13th, up from the original $30 price tag.

The flanker brand is following in stride with Fido, which also increased its 8GB data plan prices by $1. However, the price increase comes with an additional 2GB of data, so the better deal is evident here.

You can check out Virgin’s plans here.

Virgin Plus removes several limited-time offers, hikes its $30 plan by $1 a month

Virgin Plus has removed several limited-time options from its website.

Bell’s flanker brand allows customers to get plans in two categories: new phone purchases or bring your own phone.

Under the ‘bringing your own phone’ option, there’s a value plan and a starter plan.

The cheapest value plan used to start at $26 a month and offered pay-per-use data. Virgin Plus listed the offer as limited-time but has now removed it from its website.

Virgin has also removed various other limited-time options:

  • 6GB data for $39/month
  • 10GB data for $44/month
  • 12GB data for $48/month

The company has also increased its regular pay-per-use data offering from $30 a month to $31.

The only limited-time option active under this section is the $55 10GB data plan. Also listed as a limited-time option, the plan offers 8GB of data, plus a 2GB bonus.

The ‘getting a new phone’ side also offered a $26 a month plan, but that also appears to have been removed.

You can check out Virgin’s plans here.

Telecom complaints decreased over the past year, the CCTS reports

Telecom complaints are down 26 percent, according to a recent report from the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-Television Services (CCTS).

The report examines complaints received between August 1st, 2021 and January 31st, 2022, and compares them to the last mid-year report.

The CCTS accepted 6,682 complaints on 14 providers, with a 88 percent resolve rate.

The recent report shows complaints decreased by 26 percent, a change from the last report, which reported an increase.

Bell accounts for 17.7 percent of all complaints, Rogers 15 percent, Fido 11.3 percent, Telus 8 percent and Virgin Plus 7.6 percent.

Bell has the largest decrease, with 36 percent fewer complaints than the year prior. Fido follows with 20 percent. Rogers and Telus reported close declines, with 16.5 percent and 16.9 percent, respectively. Virgin Plus saw nearly 10 percent fewer complaints.

The Wireless Code

Wireless complaints represented almost half of all complaints the CCTS accepted, with ‘disclosure issues’ in the lead. Conflicts with contracts and agreements were the most complained about aspects.

The CCTS found 24 breaches of the wireless code, down from the 28 reported last year.

9 of these breaches stem from providers failing to give customers reasonable notification and relevant information before disconnecting services.

4 of the breaches were because the service provider didn’t supply the customer with a paper or electronic copy of the contract listing all relevant information to the wireless code.

3 of the breaches are related to ‘critical information summary’ where providers must give customers a document containing the most essential parts of the contract.

“We continue to observe problems with service providers failing to disclose important information to their customers when signing up for a new phone, internet or TV service,” CCTS Commissioner and CEO Howard Maker said. “This can lead to complaints if bills or services don’t meet the customer’s expectation.”
