A new grocery delivery app offers 10-minute deliveries in Toronto

Toronto residents now have a new option to have their groceries delivered. Ninja Delivery is a startup from Waterloo that was birthed during the height of the pandemic in 2021. Until now, the company operated solely in Waterloo, but now is expanding to cover Toronto.

“We started Ninja to save people their most scarce resource: Time,” reads the company’s release about the expansion. “This inspired us to build a service that feels like magic, and now we want to make it available to as many people as possible,” said Wesley Yue, Co-Founder, and CEO, Ninja Delivery.

What’s special about the delivery service, and what makes it different from the likes of Instacart and UberEats is that Ninja has a pre-determined delivery zone in which it guarantees fast 10-minute deliveries. The service is available every day until 2am, has no minimum order amount and offers free delivery on orders over $9.99.

The delivery service offers a range of items, including fresh produce, meat, animal food and even COVID-19 antigen tests.

While the expansion is a positive for Toronto residents, it’s even better for people looking for a side hustle to make some extra money. The company says it hires local residents and provides fair wages, tips and benefits. A quick look at the company’s website shows that the service promotes the use of electric bikes, and even provides said bikes to its couriers that are paid $17/hr + tips.

The Ninja Delivery app is available to download on iOS and Android. Learn more about the service here.

BlackBerry and University of Waterloo launch research program addressing global water issues

The University of Waterloo’s Water Institute and BlackBerry have recently entered a partnership to address water-related challenges across the world.

The Water Institute is a program focusing on the economics of water, its research, and global challenges.

The partnership has led to the launch of the Water Innovation Challenge. The goal is for professors and students part of the program to propose projects outlining how BlackBerry’s existing technology can be advanced while tackling challenges related to water, such as the cybersecurity of water systems.

The challenge will specifically be referencing the sustainable development goals outlined by the United Nations. The goals include clean water and sanitation for all and the conservation of oceans.

“The Water Institute at the University of Waterloo is thrilled to be partnering with BlackBerry to catalyze technological innovation to advance progress against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” Roy Brouwer, the program’s executive director, said in a statement. “The Water Innovation Challenge will connect our researchers to BlackBerry technologies in new ways to address the most urgent global challenges of today.”

Applications can be submitted between January 10 and February 24. The program’s website provides additional resources, such as information sessions, for interested applicants.

One-room hotel opens in London for one year

Perhaps the U.K.’s most exclusive hotel, A Room for London is a one-bedroom temporary ‘pop-up’ hotel perched on the very edge of the Queen Elizabeth hall at the Southbank Centre overlooking the Thames.

Shaped like a boat, it looks as though the vessel has been left beached on top of the building by retreating flood waters. Able to accommodate only one set of visitors at a time, this architectural experiment is already booked solid through until June 2012.

The installation is the brainchild of David Kohn Architects and artist Fiona Banner, and is part of the Living Architecture project, which endeavors to teach people about contemporary architecture by having them reside within the unique structures.

The boat will remain beached atop the Southbank Centre throughout 2012, with bookings for July through December 2012 starting on January 19. In future years, the architects plan to perch the vessel atop other buildings in the country’s capital.
