Google plans annual update cadence for Wear OS

Google is back in the smartwatch game, but understandably people are still skeptical, given the company’s penchant for killing off projects (pour one out for Stadia).

However, Google has been hitting the streets to tell people it’s committed to Wear OS. The company’s senior vice president of hardware, Rick Osterloh, told The Verge in an interview that Google had long-term plans for the Pixel Watch. And earlier this week, the company confirmed to Wired that it was planning an annual update cadence for Wear OS.

Google’s director of product management for Wear OS, Björn Kilburn, told Wired in a virtual interview that:

“Our goal is, from a platform perspective, for us to release a new version of Wear generally every year in a similar fashion to mobile, partly because we need to support mobile. If new functionalities added in Android are critical for watches and hearables, then we’ve got to find a way to get it into the watch.”

In other words, those with Wear OS devices can expect yearly updates just like smartphone owners get yearly Android updates. There will also be quarterly updates with “new experiences” through the year, just like with Android.

Moreover, Kilburn said that Wear OS 3 would move towards a smartphone-like update model where manufacturers are responsible for pushing over-the-air updates to wearables. That may come as bad news for some, given it risks fragmenting the Wear OS ecosystem much like Android smartphones. On the other hand, it may enable wearable makers to extend support — Wired notes that Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 will get four years of updates. Google’s Pixel Watch, on the other hand, will get three years of software updates.

Finally, Kilburn said that Google was “absolutely committed” to Wear OS, pointing to the number of refreshed apps, the company’s collaboration with Samsung, and the Pixel Watch as evidence.

If you’re interested in reading the rest of Kilburn’s thoughts about Wear OS, the Pixel Watch, and more, check out the full interview here.

The Pixel Watch’s bezels are thicc

Based on early leaked images, I was concerned that Google’s upcoming Pixel Watch might feature rather large bezels, but it appears they’re Apple Watch Series 3 level thicc.

According to a new leak from Japanese retailer Joshin that WinFuture’s Roland Quandt shared, the Pixel Watch’s bezels take up almost 10mm of the smartwatch’s rumoured 41mm front. That said, based on the images shared by Quandt, Google’s Wear OS 3 is capable of making the sizable bezels fade into the background of the smartwatch to some extent.

I also occasionally use the Pebble Time Round (RIP), and it has massive bezels. Still, if you look at these renders of the Pixel Watch beside the Apple Watch Series 7, there’s no comparison regarding the size of both wearables’ bezels.

Ahead of Google’s big Pixel event tomorrow, leaks regarding the anticipated wearable are still flowing, including a look at its swappable bands and even unboxing images.

The Pixel Watch is rumoured to cost $349 USD (roughly $477 CAD) for the Wi-Fi version and $399 (about $545 CAD) for the LTE iteration.

Google’s Pixel Watch is expected to be revealed at the tech giant’s fall hardware event on October 6th, alongside the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. For everything we’re expecting to see at the keynote, follow this link.

Google Pixel Watch fast pair notification appears on Redditor’s phone

Man, Google’s devices are getting leaked this week.

A Redditor in Sydney, Australia, was in a shopping mall and received a prompt by a Fast Pair notification to set up a Google Pixel Watch. The notification showed a picture of the wearable in black with its obsidian band.

The notification said that the device app is required to start setup, with an option to go to Google Play.

This notification seems possible. Wear OS 3 requires its manufacturers to make their own Wear OS companion app. And it was previously reported that Google is working on one for the Pixel Watch.

Google will officially unveil the Pixel 7, 7 Pro and the Pixel Watch on October 6th, where we’ll learn more about the companion app and the device itself.

watchOS 9 features QuickType Keyboard with the Apple Watch Series 7

On the surface, watchOS 9 seems like a relatively low-key update to Apple’s smartwatch operating system, but now that the dust has settled surrounding WWDC 2022’s keynote, more information about the OS is starting to appear.

As first reported by MacRumors, Twitter user Braham Shank uncovered that watchOS 9 features a QuickType keyboard with the Apple Watch Series 7.

This keyboard suggests words as the user types in an effort to predict what you might want to add next to your message. In the context of a smartwatch, this feature could be particularly useful when you’re trying to send a quick message.

QuickType first made its way to the iPhone alongside iOS 8 back in 2014. Other notable watchOS 9 features include expanded sleep monitoring, medication tracking and several new Watch Faces.

The first version of Apple’s developer beta for watchOS 9 is currently available. A public beta will follow in July and then the full version of the update is expected to drop this fall.
