Google’s Pixel Watch could be revealed on May 26th

Google has been rumoured to be working on a Pixel smartwatch for years at this point.

Though reports surrounding the project disappeared for a few months, reports recently surfaced that the long-awaited wearable could arrive in 2022. Now, thanks to a rumour from Jon Prosser — a sometimes reliable source of tech leaks — we have a better idea of when we may finally catch an official glimpse of Google’s fabled smartwatch: May 26th.

Prosser says that this is “the first we’ve seen a set date on the device behind the scenes.” While it’s odd for such a specific date to leak this far ahead, it lines up with Google’s annual I/O developer conference, which usually takes place in late May.

Little is known about Google’s Pixel Watch, but it’s expected to feature a circular watch face, minimized bezels and an Apple Watch-like ‘Digital Crown.’ Previously rumoured features include a heart rate sensor and other fitness-focused functionality borrowed from Google-owned Fitbit.

As a long-time Apple Watch user, it would be great to see Google enter the wearable space in a meaningful way. While the Apple Watch remains the best smartwatch around, the tech giant has little incentive to add notable new features to the wearable with each yearly release.

For example, the Apple Watch Series 5 is nearly identical to the Series 6 beyond its more rounded sides. If Google is able to make a splash with its smartwatch, there’s a possibility it could push Apple’s line of wearables forward as well.

Apple reportedly working on three Apple Watch models for 2022 release

Apple could have several Apple Watch models currently in the works.

According to often-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, as first reported by MacRumors, Apple’s 2022 smartwatch lineup will include the Apple Watch Series 8, the second-gen Apple Watch SE and a more rugged, “extreme sports” version of the wearable.

Earlier this week in his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also mentioned that Apple plans to release a “rugged” Apple Watch. Gurman’s report describes this new version of the Apple Watch as targeting athletes, bikers and people into extreme sports.

Given two sources have independently mentioned this new version of the Apple Watch’s existence, there’s likely at least some level of truth to the rumours. It’s unclear what features will be included in the Series 8 or 2nd-gen SE. That said, rumours regarding Apple Watch blood glucose monitoring have appeared several times over the past few years.

Kuo says that these three new Apple Watch models with will release in 2022.

Samsung brings its web browser to the Galaxy Watch 4

When I reviewed the Galaxy Watch 4, I had a great experience with the smartwatch, but apparently, it was missing a web browser (I didn’t even notice). Now, Samsung has rectified this issue and brought its web browser to the wearable.

This feature was initially available with Samsung’s Tizen watches, but with the move to Google’s Wear OS, Samsung’s browser originally wasn’t available with the Galaxy Watch 4. As you may have already assumed, the Wear OS version of Samsung’s Internet app features a browser that lets users access webpages directly from their wrist.

When you first use the wearable browser, you’ll see a guide that shows how the app is optimized for your wrist. For example, a diagonal swipe from either side of the screen allows users to see the corners of a webpage, a swipe up reveals bookmarks, “Zoom mode,” and a shortcut to send webpages to your phone.

The browser’s opening page also shows a list of Samsung Internet bookmarks synced with your smartphone.

While having a browser on your wrist might be helpful occasionally, the app also looks a little clunky. With that in mind, I don’t think any smartwatch really needs a dedicated web browser, especially when you can just ask Bixby questions with the Galaxy Watch 4.

Apple now considers the original Apple Watch a ‘Vintage Product’

The 38mm and 42mm first-generation Apple Watch models have been added to Apple’s list of vintage and obsolete products.

The first version of Apple’s smartwatch launched more than six years ago back in 2015. The ‘Series 1’ was followed by the ‘Series 2’ in 2016, and since then, the tech giant has released a new version of the wearable every year.

Being labelled as vintage means that the wearable is no longer eligible for repairs by Apple or from authorized service providers. Apple’s vintage list typically includes products the tech giant stopped selling more than five years ago and less than seven years ago.

While the Series 1 looks very similar to the Series 7, Apple’s entire strategy surrounding the Apple Watch has shifted considerably over the last few years. The OG Apple Watch was far more focused on being an extension of what the iPhone is capable of, while more recent versions of the wearable are more independent, feature several health-focused sensors and include a wide variety of fitness features.

The Apple Watch Series 7 is expected to release at some point in October, though strangely, the wearable doesn’t yet have a specific release date, backing up rumours that it suffered a manufacturing delay.
