Beyoncé’s new album leaked online

The legal team for Beyoncé has been left scrambling as the singer found her entire upcoming album, 4, leaked online, more than 20 days before it was due to be released, reports the Los Angeles Times

The leak began slowly on Tuesday (June 7), when an unauthorized copy of a new track, Party, began making the rounds. Soon after, another song, Countdown, started to pop up on various websites and file-shares.

Once the ball was rolling, it didn’t take long for the entire album to surface, leaving the pop star’s legal team scrambling to get the illicit tracks pulled from websites.

While many blogs and fan-sites have yanked the offending material, determined fans have taken to Twitter to share the links directly, making it harder for the lawyers to track down.

At this point, it’s difficult to say whether the leak will hurt Beyoncé’s bottom line when the album comes out officially on June 29.

Lady Gaga’s new album, Born This Way, appeared online several days before its scheduled release, and still went on to sell more than a million copies. The official singles off Beyoncé’s new album, however, have not been performing as well as expected, with Run the World (Girls) peaking at number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Arctic Monkeys stream new album ahead of release

Although their new album, Suck It and See, isn’t due to hit shelves for another week, English indie rockers Arctic Monkeys are already streaming the new tracks through Soundcloud, reports Consequence of Sound.

Produced by James Ford, Suck It and See is the fourth studio album from the psychedelic rockers, scheduled for official release on June 7.

The debut single Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair was first released as a digital download on April 12 and peaked at number four on the UK Indie Singles Chart. In the U.K., the single was also released as a limited-edition vinyl for Record Store Day on April 16 with another album track, Brick by Brick, on the B-side.

All twelve tracks are currently freely available online – and legally. Streaming a full album before its official release is a new tactic that is becoming increasingly popular with record labels these days as they try to bolster flagging album sales and rampant piracy.

New Beyoncé song leaked online

Only a few short days after the release Beyoncé’s post-apocalyptic music video for Run The World (Girls), fans of the pop star had another surprise coming when a new song, Till the End of Time, leaked online yesterday (May 23), reports MTV.

Heavy on the percussion, the new song has a military drum beat that drives the song forward. The up-tempo track is described by MTV as being "reminiscent of an older Destiny’s Child cut."

Rumors suggest that the catchy dance track will be the next official single off the pop star’s new album, 4, which is due out June 28.

Beyoncé, however, revealed earlier this month that she had recorded a staggering number of potential tracks, experimenting with different sounds of music. With so many tracks to choose from, there is no official confirmation whether Till the End of Time will even make the final cut.

"I recorded more than 60 songs; everything I ever wanted to try, I just did it," she told Billboard.

David Bowie’s lost album surfaces online

An unreleased 2001 David Bowie album, Toy, has leaked online, reports Spinner.

The lost album first surfaced earlier this month, when a physical recording sold for over $100 in an eBay auction on March 15. Since then, a CD-quality digital version has started making the rounds.

The high-quality rip of the recording showed up on file-sharing sites last weekend, and has spread among the fan community.

Although five of the songs were finally released on other albums, many of the tracks had never been heard due to a dispute with label, Virgin Records, which left the album buried in post-production.

The songs Afraid and Uncle Floyd found their way onto Bowie’s 2002 album, Heathens, while Shadow Man, Baby Loves That Way and You’ve Got a Habit of Leaving eventually surfaced as B-sides.

Bowie is currently on an indefinite hiatus from making new music. His last album, Reality, was released in 2003, and he has refrained from touring since undergoing heart surgery in 2004.

Very young children now accessing Internet

A surprising number of children under the age of five use the Internet on a regular basis, reports the Independent.

Eighty percent of U.S. children under the age of five are active online on a weekly basis, according to a new study conducted by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center and Sesame Street Workshop.

After age five, Internet usage actually begins to drop off, and only 70 percent of children aged 6 to 9 go online at least once a week.

The figures include all types of online activity, including watching television and movies online, which likely accounts for a significant amount of children’s Internet usage.

Even with the growth of the Internet and a continual shift to streaming entertainment, television still remains the most popular medium for children, and about 90 percent of children over the age of five watch at least three hours of programming each day.

"In the digital age there is a new fact of life: young children are active participants in the technological innovation that shapes family experiences," said Dr. Michael Levine, Executive Director of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center.

How dangerous is the Internet for kids?

The Internet may not be as dangerous for children as parents suspect, reports a new survey out of the European Union, which finds that parents and kids perceive online risks differently.

Researchers with the London School of Economics and France’s National Center for Scientific Research surveyed 25,140 EU children aged 9 to 16 about their Internet habits, as well as how often they had encountered risks, such as seeing sexual images, communicating with strangers, or being bullied.

Only 12 percent of all children surveyed said that they had experienced something online that left them bothered or upset. For instance, 14 percent of children have encountered sexual images online, but only two percent said they were upset by them.

By contrast, only six percent of children had received bullying messages, but over half of those were fairly or very upset by them – however bullying is still more likely to occur offline than online.

Overall, 40 percent of children reported encountering at least one risk online, and within this group, parents often remained unaware. Of those children who had seen a sexual image, 40 percent of parents did not know, and with regards to cyber-bullying, 56 percent of the victim’s parents were not informed.
