Rogers launches Wi-Fi 6E mode, 8Gbps symmetrical speeds

Rogers has launched its new Wi-Fi modem with Wi-Fi 6E for select customers in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland.

The Toronto-based company says it’s the first major provider in Canada to launch the “most powerful Wi-Fi technology.”

Wi-Fi 6E allows for multi-Gigabit Wi-Fi speeds, increased capacity for even more connections, and “ultra-low lag times.”

“Wi-Fi 6E is the fastest Wi-Fi available with more than double the bandwidth of the previous generation and can connect more than 100 devices at the same time,” Rogers says in a press release.

The company also says its Ignite Internet with 8Gbps symmetrical speeds can now be pre-ordered.

“This fibre-powered internet service with game-changing speeds will enable an extreme performance to fuel championship gaming, endless entertainment, transform virtual and augmented reality and future-proof the connected home,” Rogers says. “With bandwidth to spare, the only limitation is the imagination.”

The company announced plans for 8Gbps symmetrical speeds back in April.

Bell to deliver 8Gbps symmetrical internet speeds next month

Bell says it will introduce internet speeds of up to 8Gbps starting in September. The company says the symmetrical download and upload speeds will be the fastest in North America among major providers.

The new speeds will first be available in parts of Toronto, where download speeds will be five times faster than cable technology and upload speeds will be 250 times faster. “More regions across the country to follow,” the company said in a press release.

Introducing new services in Toronto first is a move Bell makes frequently. For example, the company first gave Toronto residents in select areas access to its 3500MHz spectrum in June.

The company says it will also introduce Wi-Fi 6E in homes through a new Giga Hub modem. As the next phase of Wi-Fi advancement, it will improve speeds and provide lower latency when used on compatible devices.

Collectively, the two announcements will improve the at-home experience, Bell said.

The company will first give Ontario and Quebec residents access to the Giga Hub in September. While the company stated it will expand access to other provinces, it didn’t provide specifics.

Bell’s pure fibre internet is now three times faster than cable

Bell’s pure fibre internet service now has download and upload speeds of 3Gbps, providing the fastest internet speeds among major providers in Canada, the company claims.

Bell says the new speeds are three times faster than cable in a press release detailing the announcement. But the service is only available in “most areas of Toronto.” Bell says it will make the services available to other regions “soon.”

The pure fibre package comes with Home Hub 4000 with Wi-Fi 6. As the newest Wi-Fi technology available, it allows six people to simultaneously use their devices with no impact on speed or performance.

The move comes as Bell increased costs for mobile customers.

Last month the company increased mobile customers’ bills by $3/month. It also recently increased its $90/ month 45GB mobile plan by $5.

Telus brings its PureFibre X internet to Edmonton

Telus has launched its new internet speed tier, PureFibre X, which offers upload and download speeds of 2.5Gbps, in Edmonton.

The carrier claims this is the fastest speed in Canada compared to other major internet providers.

It’s the only major provider in Western Canada to offer a 100 percent fibre optic connection to the home, Telus says in a statement. This means the network is built with the best fibre optics to ensure customers have the fastest available network. The 100 percent fibre option connection is “critical” to the function of PureFibre X.

The PureFibre X internet plan also includes a Wi-Fi 6 compatible router. Combined with PureFibre X, users have access to faster internet speeds over multiple devices resulting in simultaneous streaming in 4K, video conferencing, gaming, and more.

Telus first launched the service in Calgary over the summer.
