How to watch William Shatner get launched into space

Today’s the day to watch Canadian actor William Shatner — known best for his role as Star Trek‘s Captain James T. Kirk — become the oldest person to go to space.

Originally scheduled for October 12th, the launch was delayed a day due to poor weather conditions.

Blue Origin, the aerospace company that organized this sub-orbital spaceflight, is currently streaming live from West Texas in lead-up to the “second human flight” of its New Shepard launch vehicle.

You can also follow @blueorigin on Twitter for launch updates.

Or, you can watch the livestream below:

New Shepard’s first-ever tourist flight took place on July 20th, with Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos on board.

Oh god, William Shatner is getting launched into space

Canadian actor William Shatner is on the passenger list for Blue Origin’s next commercial flight into space, because of course he is.

The Verge reports that Shatner will be joining the 11-minute voyage on the aerospace company’s New Shepard rocket alongside former NASA engineer and Planet Labs co-founder Chris Boshuizen, French software executive Glen de Vries, and Blue Origin vice-president of mission and flight operations Audrey Powers.

Shatner is best known for his role as James T. Kirk, the shirt-ripping, alien-wrestling, diplomat-smooching captain of Star Trek’s USS Enterprise — and best loved by this author as James Spader’s queer platonic husband in the criminally forgotten aughts’ court drama Boston Legal.

At 90 years old, Shatner will become the oldest person to ever visit space — you know, the nonagenarian-friendly place where “astronauts lose on average 1 percent to 2 percent of their bone mineral density every month.”

The New Shepard is a suborbital rocket system and Blue Origin’s entry into the complicated new frontier of space tourism.

Blue Origin’s CEO, noted soft-serve ice cream enthusiast Jeff Bezos, was among the passengers on New Shepard’s first tourist flight in July.

While the Canadian Space Agency’s website assures me a short-duration flight poses little risk to Shatner’s bones, I would kindly ask that no one contact me at 9:30am ET/6:30am PT on Tuesday, October 12th when live launch coverage is scheduled to begin, as I — alongside my father, who remembers sitting down to watch black-and-white ST:TOS episodes every week as a kid — will be busy.

Actress Jamie reflected on how Jerry had worked with her parents, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis.

She tweeted: "Jerry Lewis loomed large in my family. Many movies with my mom & he made home movies with Janet and Tony. He made me and many laugh. #rip (sic)".

Jim praised Jerry as an "undeniable genius" and credited him for being a big influence on his own career.

He wrote: "That fool was no dummy. Jerry Lewis was an undeniable genius an unfathomable blessing, comedy’s absolute! I am because he was! ;^D (sic)"

And Joan hailed her "good friend" as the "King of Comedy".

He wrote: "Jerry Lewis just died. When I met him, I feel (sic) apart, just sobbed. I guess it’s time for that again.

"We will miss Jerry so much. I can’t believe I got to meet him and spend time with him. How did my life get good enough that Jerry Lewis would smile at me? And how sad to lose him. Goodbye to the real, no irony, king of comedy.(sic)"

‘Two and a Half Men’ star Jon Cryer reflected on Jerry’s lasting legacy as a huge influence on modern comedy.

He tweeted: "Jerry Lewis was a complicated man of astonishing talent.

"If u are in comedy, you’ve been influenced by him, whether u know it or not. RIP.(sic)"

William Shatner offered a short and simple tribute.

He wrote: "Condolences to the family of Jerry Lewis. The world is a lot less funnier today."

His ‘Star Trek’ co-star, George Takei shared an equally brief but heartfelt message.

He posted: "We have lost a great comedian and even greater heart. Thank you for the laughs and the feels, Jerry Lewis. (sic)"

He shared: "My mentor & friend Jerry Lewis has passed away. A visionary. A pioneer in all forms of entertainment. A charitable human. A father.

"Jerry’s daughter Danielle is the reason her dad & I got so close. I will never be able to thank her enough for putting him in my life.

"He meant the world to me& I will forever cherish the time I got to spend with him & his family. At a dark time in my life he brought me joy.

"Always funny. Always helpful. Always honest. I will miss you Jerry Lewis. The world has lost a true innovator & icon.(sic)"

Jerry had five sons – including Joseph, who died of an overdose in 2009 – with first wife Patti Palmer, and daughter Danielle with second spouse SanDee Pitnick.

William Shatner’s close call

William Shatner had a lucky escape when his horse and buggy flipped over during a show in Kentucky.

The ‘Star Trek’ actor was competing at the Mercer County Fair & Horse Show in Harrodsburg when his horse reared up, flipping the cart over and tossing Shatner, 86, out.

TMZ reports that William did not require medical attention and he even went on to take first place.

Both he and his horse were uninjured in the incident.

Meanwhile, William recently admitted he feared he wouldn’t be able to put his children through college when ‘Star Trek’ was cancelled.

The actor – who played James T. Kirk in the original television series – worried he wouldn’t be able to give his children an education when the show was cancelled in 1969.

He said: "It was devastating. It was all very comfortable by that point. This place that I come to every morning, leave in the evening and a check comes every week. And now you’re taking it away from me? My five-year mission was to put my children through college!"

Reflecting on the series, he added: "What worked best was the story and our characters’ position in the story. What didn’t work were many of the effects.

"As cheap as you think it looked, it was worse. I’d pull down the jersey and it would rip, the sets shook and the lights would wink on and off. It was very, very primitive by our standards now. But then, all that really mattered to me were the words, because a film story is done in close-up. And everything else is extraneous. I knew that the words would carry. They were wonderful."

And Joan’s message comes as one of many from the world of showbiz, as tributes flood in since the announcement of Debbie’s untimely passing.

William Shatner wrote on Twitter: "Debbie Reynolds was one of the last of Hollywood Royalty. It breaks my heart that she is gone. I’d hoped that my grieving was done for 2016."

Whilst Steven Fry added: "Deepest sympathy to Billie, Todd & all the family at this new blow. Time to watch ‘Postcards From The Edge’ & ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ & remember (sic)"

Bette Midler shared: "#DebbieReynolds has just died. This is too hard to comprehend. Beautiful, talented, devoted to her craft, she follows Carrie, dead days ago. (sic)"

Nichelle Nichols: I don’t remember if William Shatner was a good kisser

Nichelle Nichols "doesn’t remember" if William Shatner was a good kisser.

The 83-year-old actress starred as Lieutenant Uhura in the original series of ‘Star Trek’ in the 1960s, and was part of the very first interracial kiss shown on television when she locked lips with Captain Kirk, played by William.

Now, the star says the pair were so "professional" that she can’t remember how good her co-star was.

Speaking the Daily Mirror newspaper, Nichelle said: "The first interracial kiss on television. Oh my God. We had to make it live and make the audience go ‘wow’ and want to see the next episode. They wanted someone else to do the kiss but Bill said ‘if anyone is doing it, it is me’. It was a big deal at the time. I don’t remember if William was a good kisser or not. We were very professional."

And the star recalled how important it was that the groundbreaking kiss looked "real", and the fact that audiences believed the scene was the "ideal scenario".

She said: "Absolutely, there were people talking about it afterwards. I remember someone said to me ‘it was so real and usually kisses on screen are faked’. I don’t mean you have to kiss somebody deeply, but whatever you do it has to be real and both parties have to believe it. The fact people felt it looked real was the ideal scenario."

For Nichelle – who has 65-year-old son Kyle Johnson – the controversy around the kiss and its groundbreaking nature "seemed quite silly" as she had grown up in an interracial family and didn’t see the problem with it.

She said: "I couldn’t see the fuss because my family was interracial, my grandmother and grandfather were black and white and all my sisters and brothers were different shades. I was the brownest one in the family outside of my mother, my father looked Italian because he was part Italian. So it all seemed quite silly to me."

William Shatner’s Star Trek fears

William Shatner feared he wouldn’t be able to put his children through college when ‘Star Trek’ was cancelled.

The 85-year-old actor – who played James T. Kirk in the original television series – worried he wouldn’t be able to give his children an education when the show was cancelled in 1969.

But then, all that really mattered to me were the words, because a film story is done in close-up. And everything else is extraneous. I knew that the words would carry. They were wonderful."

And the ‘Star Trek Generations’ actor also revealed how Gene Roddenberry, who created the original Star Trek television series, sold him the part.

He shared: "Horatio Hornblower in space. Gene took a lot of ideas from that series, but mainly the five-year mission and a little ship with its doughty group of explorers.

"I wasn’t part of the first Star Trek pilot. An actor by the name of Jeffrey Hunter was part of it. NBC decided not to buy it. But they tried again. So Gene asked me to come aboard … Kirk is the essence of a hero … Heroes, classical heroes have the look of eagles. They are looking beyond the immediate problem and into the future. That was Kirk."

Meanwhile, William really enjoyed stepping behind the camera for ‘Star Trek V: The Final Frontier’.

Speaking to Empire magazine’s August issue, which is out now, he added: "I loved it! Directing’s great. It is one of the great human endeavours."
