What to do, see, and eat in Essex County

As you are making your next set of travel plans, look south. To southwestern Ontario, that is.

Sprawling beyond the city limits, Essex County includes the lakeside town of Kingsville, historic Amherstburg, Belle River, Tecumseh, Leamington (a.k.a. the tomato capital of Canada) and more.

Essex County offers serene countryside where you can connect with nature or relax at a spectacular beach while enjoying a picnic with local cuisine. Or plan a trip to Windsor for its shopping district and dining (including plenty of options to taste a famous Windsor-style pizza).

What to do

Point Pelee National Park boasts being the southernmost point of mainland Canada. This natural habitat is home to many bird species, butterfly migration routes, and so much more. Take the trolley all the way to the tip or walk the boardwalk through the beautiful marsh area.

If you are feeling extra adventurous, book a ferry trip to Pelee Island to see the lighthouse, relax on the sandy shores or take a swim, and visit the Pelee Island Winery Vineyards.

There are also many beaches along Essex County’s lakeshores that will have you ready to jump in and cool off on a hot summer day, or you can take in the spectacular views.

Where to eat

If you are visiting during perch and pickerel season, you’ll be able to find perch baskets, pickerel sandwiches, and other lake-fresh eats.

Plan a patio visit to one of the stunning wineries in the area; Viewpointe Estate Winery won’t disappoint.

If you’re heading to Amherstburg, you’ll find plenty of places to eat, including a stylish café and popular ice cream shop.

And, as previously mentioned, be sure to order up a Windsor-style pizza during your stay. Try Sam’s Pizzeria and Cantina, Capri, or ask around to find a favourite among the locals (you’ll likely get a different answer from everyone!).

Where to stay

Find a campground or scoop up a cottage rental with waterfront views of Lake Erie or Lake St. Clair. You can also rent a place on Pelee Island. Stay in Kingsville at a bed and breakfast, or one of the boutique Distinctive Inns.

If you want more of what Windsor has to offer, including access to the nightlife, restaurants, and events across the river in Detroit, like baseball games or concerts, booking your stay at one of the many downtown hotels will be more convenient.

New EV battery manufacturing plant coming to Windsor, Ontario

Battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution and automaker Stellantis N.V. are entering a joint venture to bring Canada its first EV battery manufacturing plant.

The partnership includes a $5 billion investment in a facility located in Windsor, Ontario. It will supply Stellantis plants across North America.

The facility will open in 2025 and create roughly 2,500 jobs

“With this announcement, we are securing the future for thousands more local workers and securing Windsor’s strategic location as the home of Canada’s electric vehicle future,” Drew Dilkens, the mayor of Windsor, said. “As the world pivots to EVs, Windsor will soon be home to the battery manufacturing facility that powers it all.”

In a press release, the Government of Canada said it worked closely with both companies to make the venture happen. The news will make Canada a leader in the production of EV batteries and support a domestic battery manufacturing sector in the country.

“Partnerships like these are critical to creating new jobs and putting Canada on the cutting edge of the clean economy. By working together, we are creating thousands of new jobs, making a difference in the lives of people now and making sure that future generations have a clean environment to live in,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

Porter adds flights to Windsor, Sault Ste. Marie

Canada’s Porter Airlines is adding new flights from Toronto to Windsor and Sault Ste. Marie beginning this spring, reports the Globe and Mail.

Operating out of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, flights to Windsor begin April 27 and will be offered up to three times a day, while twice-daily round-trip flights to Sault Ste. Marie begin May 4.

"We look forward to bringing our unique service to Windsor and Sault Ste. Marie. This expanding network provides more opportunities for passengers to choose Porter when traveling to important regional cities," said Porter Airlines president and CEO Robert Deluce.

"I’m thrilled that Porter has decided to add daily flights from downtown Toronto to Windsor. I’ve been advocating for this route for years, based on our region’s business needs and tourism offerings," said Windsor West MPP Sandra Pupatello.

The new connections are expected to create competition for Air Canada and VIA Rail, especially while Porter offers low introductory fares to kick off the service. A one-way flight from Toronto to Windsor costs only $89 on Porter, compared to over $200 on Air Canada – while the four-hour economy-class train ride costs around $60 with VIA Rail.
