Long-abandoned Xbox Snap feature not expected to ever return

Microsoft all but confirms that its Xbox Snap feature is unlikely to ever return to consoles. The feature was once a standout during the early Xbox One days but has since been sunsetted.

On Twitter, a user under the guise of @DjSammyV wrote to Xbox engineering lead Eden Marie, requesting to see Xbox bring Snap back. Marie wrote back and provides a seemingly concrete future to the once-beloved feature. “While we all miss snap, I don’t think it’s coming back,” Marie says in her response.

Xbox One launched with the Snap feature. This picture-in-picture mode enabled users to pin an app to the side of the screen while they played a game. For example, serious Achievement hunters would take advantage of Snap and have the Achievement app open, tracking progress. Alternatively, Snap enabled users to check out a live stream on Twitch while playing games at the same time.

Microsoft later abandoned Snap in 2017. At that time, the Xbox One saw a huge refresh in the overall UI. The Xbox dashboard was also cleaned up at that time. This same framework can be seen on the Xbox Series X/S today.

Unfortunately, the Xbox Snap did not make it through that refresh. The company previously attributes its retirement to the desire to improve the Xbox’s speed and resources.

Snap was never a widely adopted feature. That said, those who found a use for it were saddened at the time. Personally, I still wish it was a feature available now on current-gen systems. Though, judging by Marie’s statement, these wishes are likely futile.

WB Games Montreal’s Gotham Knights gets new demo, PS4/Xbox One versions cancelled

It’s been a big morning for Gotham Knights.

The Warner Bros. Montreal-developed action-RPG just got a meaty 13-and-a-half-minute gameplay demo focused on Nightwing and Red Hood. The footage, narrated by game director Geoff Ellenor, shows the two Batman allies exploring a bit of Gotham before taking on enemies.

Nightwing has the gymnastics-heavy staff-focused fighting style fans would expect, while Red Hood is all about peppering enemies from afar with dual pistols. On top of that, a bit of character customization and stealth, as well as another glimpse at the fan-favourite Court of Owls villains, can be seen. The first gameplay reveal was focused on Batgirl and Robin, so it’s fitting that the new footage is all about the game’s other two playable characters.

Check out the full new demo below:

Alongside the demo, Warner Bros. has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game have been cancelled. When the game was first unveiled in summer 2020, WB had said that the game was coming to last-gen consoles as well as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Per WB, the decision was made to “provide players with the best possible gameplay experience,” although nothing else was said beyond that brief statement.

Gotham Knights follows the Bat Family — Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl and Red Hood — as they protect Gotham against rising threats amid Batman’s apparent death. The game is unrelated to the Batman: Arkham series, which WB Games Montreal previously worked on with 2013’s Arkham Origins.

Gotham Knights will release on October 25th.

Deep Pink joins a lineup of Xbox Wireless Controllers that includes standard Black and White options, as well as slightly more expensive variants like ‘Aqua Shift’ and ‘Daystrike Camo.’

The company also offers a ‘Design Lab’ service through which you can create your own custom controller at a higher cost.
