Tanning beds found to be twice as risky as the Mediterranean sun

(Relaxnews) – A new study published online Thursday in the British Journal of Dermatology finds that nine out of 10 tanning beds in England fail to meet safety standards, making them twice as likely to cause skin cancer than a vacation in the Mediterranean.

Researchers from the University of Dundee in the UK found that the levels of ultraviolet radiation emitted by 402 tanning beds were on average two times higher than recommended limits.

Scientists calculated that a 10-minute session in such a tanning bed is twice as likely to cause skin cancer than soaking for 10 minutes in the midday sun in the Mediterranean.

Their findings show that 90 percent of tanning beds are emitting radiation that is higher than the safety standards set by the EU — with one tanning bed emitting enough radiation to be six times more likely to cause skin cancer than the Mediterranean sun.
