The Canadian Car of the Year

For a week, 70 Canadian journalists gathered in Niagara-on-the-Lake to evaluate new cars and select the Canadian Car of the Year.

No less than 157 vehicles were extensively tested to determine which were the best rated in 12 categories.  From their reports, it seems that the German carmakers continue to dominate much of the market.

The best family car under $30 000 was found to be the Volkswagen Golf Wagon TDI, while the Golf GTi was named the best sports car under $50 000.  The Volkswagen Touareg TDI was named the top crossover with a price between $35 000 and $60 000.

Audi earned the best convertible tag with the A5 Convertible, and the best sports car priced at over $50 000 was the S4.

The BMW 335d Sedan beat all other competitors in the field of luxury cars, while prestige cars were dominated by the Porsche Panamera Turbo.

Asia was represented by the Subaru Outback as the best crossover for under $35 000, and the Mazda 3 took the prize for small cars under $21 000.  The sport version was named the best small car over $21 000.  The Lexus RX450h was named the best crossover with a price of more than $60 000.

Finally, the only American car to catch the attention of the journalists was the Ford Taurus, which was named the best family car over $30 000.
