The Cannes Film Fest Begins

The Cannes Film Festival kicks off today with Disney-Pixar’s 3D-animated film Up! opening the event.

Today (May 13) marks the debut of the 62nd Cannes Film Festival. Quentin Tarantino, Pedro Almodovar, Brad Pitt, Penélope Cruz, Johnny Depp, Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, Denise Richards, Samuel L. Jackson and Charlotte Gainsbourg are among the plethora of stars expected to arrive on the roof of the Palais Croisette.

The festival will premiere with the film Up!, which is both the first animated film and 3D film to receive this honour.

Tomorrow (May 14), 20 films will be competing for the Palme d’Or, including the highly-awaited Quentin Tarantino production, Inglorious Basterds.

The winners will be announced on May 24 before the closing film, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky, by director Jan Kounen and starring Anna Mouglalis, is presented.

The panel of judges, presided by French actress Isabelle Huppert, will include directors James Gray and actresses Asia Argento, Shu Qi and Robin Wright Penn, to name a few.
