The King of Pop’s death was announced last night (June 25), and the news spread quickly around the globe. Several celebrities who knew Jackson personally have released statements.
Elizabeth Taylor, a close friend of Jackson’s for nearly 20 years, plans to grieve the loss in private, although a representative for Taylor released this statement, "Dame Elizabeth Taylor is too devastated by the passing of her dear friend Michael Jackson to issue a statement at this time."
It was Elizabeth Taylor who first called Jackson the King of Pop in 1989 when he won the Artist of the Decade award.
Another famous friend, Liza Minelli, said, "He was a kind, genuine, and wonderful man. He was also one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived. I loved him very much and I will miss him every remaining day of my life."
Actress Brooke Shields, who walked many red carpet events with Jackson over the years, was devastated by the news, calling Jackson an "extraordinary friend, artist."
Madonna revealed that she, "can’t stop crying over the sad news." She added, "I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats, but his music will live on forever!"
