The undiscovered wine country

Ten up-and-coming wine regions worth checking out.

Stepping outside the traditional wine region can give you the chance to sample something new and different without breaking the bank; with that in mind, AskMen.com has compiled a top-ten list of up-and-coming wine regions that are worth checking out.

Taking the top spot was Austria, most notably for the peppery, stony whites made from the native Gruner Veltliner grape variety. The country also has some great reds to offer, namely Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt and St. Laurent.

For French wine without the high-end price tag, the website recommends checking out their number two selection: the south and south-west of the country, where a huge range of styles is available for much less than those out of the Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne regions.

Argentina took third place for their growing selection of red, white and sparkling wines. In fourth was Chile, for its up-and-coming new red variety Carmenere. Rounding out the top five was Israel for the fine balance that the wines strike between ripe fruit and earthy soil.

The rest of the top-ten list as determined by AskMen.com:

6.   South Africa
7.   Portugal
8.   Galicia, Spain
9.   Jerez, Spain
