Tiger Crowned Athlete of the Decade

Despite the events that have occurred over previous weeks, Tiger Woods was picked as Athlete of the Decade.

In spite of the monstrous scandal surrounding Woods for his repeat bouts of infidelity, it seems that his golfing talents have still managed to earn him proper recognition, reports La Presse Canadienne.

Yesterday (December 16), the golf champion earned the title of Athlete of the Decade following a vote by members of The Associated Press.  The voters were able to overlook his personal indiscretions and focus on the past decade in which Woods was an outstanding player in his sport.

He won 64 tournaments in every continent, including 12 major tourneys. For the PGA matches, Woods claimed 56 victories in 10 years and was only defeated once during a tournament in which he was in the lead in the final round.

Also in the running for the Athlete of the Decade list was Lance Armstrong, who came in second place. He won the Tour de France six times in the decade and is a cancer survivor. Armstrong is followed by tennis star Roger Federer, who holds a record for Grand Slam titles.

In fourth, we find American swimmer Michael Phelps, and rounding off the top five is the New England Patriots quarterback and new papa, Tom Brady.

On December 11, Tiger Woods announced that he was retiring from professional golf for an undetermined period of time in order to put his life back together.
