To get an epidural or not?

The arrival of the epidural in the 1980s revolutionized childbirth.

Even though it is a very common practice today, some women still refuse to get an epidural during childbirth.

This prick in the back eliminates the pain caused by contractions during labour. But it is every woman’s choice whether to get one or not.

Some women voluntarily decide not to receive this local anaesthesia because they want to experience a completely natural birth.

There are some situations where doctors suggest a woman agree to get an epidural to ensure her safety, such as women with scoliosis, blood clotting problems, skin infections or even those who have a fever on the day labour begins. In some cases, like a woman in labour with twins, an epidural may be required.

The benefits of an epidural to reduce pain are very real. On the other hand, it can cause the urge to push to wane and this can prolong labour. A new mother can also suffer from headaches for up to 48 hours after delivery.

Getting an epidural will not make your paralyzed nor will it harm the baby. It is a personal choice for every woman to make, except in some medical situations where doctors might insist on it.
