Tom Cruise hunts for new director

Guillermo del Toro opts to team up with James Cameron instead.

Oscar-nominated director Guillermo del Toro bowed out of a new project with Tom Cruise. Vulture reports: "Del Toro had been (and is now no longer) developing a new twist on the story of Van Helsing, vampire slayer, with Tom Cruise producing and possibly starring… However, even with del Toro gone, we hear that Cruise remains attached to the project."

Del Toro jumped Cruise’s ship and moved on to a project with Oscar Award winner James Cameron. He signed on to direct the film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s novella At The Mountains of Madness. James Cameron also signed on to produce.

The 3D movie will start shooting in Summer 2011. Del Toro picked the best in the business to work with. James Cameron has produced the two highest-grossing films of all time, Avatar and Titanic.

For his part, Tom Cruise is currently starring in Knight and Day with Cameron Diaz. There is no word on whether the Van Helsing project with Cruise will move forward or be shelved.
