Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher?

Christopher McQuarrie to write and direct film adaptation from Lee Child bestselling series.

Valkyrie star Tom Cruise may take the leading role of Jack Reacher in One Shot, a film adaptation of the ninth novel in a series of bestselling Lee Child thrillers, reports the Hollywood Reporter.

The Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie has previously worked with Cruise on Valkyrie and The Tourist (when Cruise was attached to the project), and has written and will direct One Shot. The two men are also linked to the upcoming Top Gun 2 movie in 2013.

One Shot tells the story of former military policeman Jack Reacher who is contacted by a man accused of randomly opening fire and shooting five people. The man, who Reacher knows from his army days, claims to be innocent, so Reacher starts investigating the case and finds himself involved in a complex cover-up.

Filming is expected to begin this autumn in Pittsburgh. In the meantime, Cruise will star with Jeremy Renner in with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, due in theaters on December 16. He is currently filming the musical Rock of Ages.
