Top-5 : Ilya Sorokin credited with a goal thanks to Steven Stamkos

It was a very big hockey day yesterday in the National Hockey League, as we had the last big Saturday of hockey before the March 7 trade deadline,

And through the trades of Ryan Lindgren, Gustav Nyquist, and Seth Jones, we had some very nice highlights.

Here’s a summary of them.

1. Ilya Sorokin gets a goal thanks to Steven Stamkos

The game between the New York Islanders and the Nashville Predators gave us one of the most unusual goals in history yesterday.

In fact, as the Islanders were leading 6-4 at the end of the third period, the Preds pulled their goalie to try to close the gap.

The Preds were shooting from everywhere, and Ilya Sorokin made several great saves, including one that ended up on Steven Stamkos’ stick.

And that’s when he made a mistake, as he tried to pass the puck to his defenseman, he sent it into his own empty net.

The goal was therefore credited to Ilya Sorokin since he was the last to touch the puck on the Islanders’ side.

In short, a very funny moment that allowed the Islanders to go get a big 7-4 win over the Preds.

Sorokin even took the opportunity to tease his good friend Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers’ goalie, saying he knew he would score a goal before him.

2. A referee controversy ruins the end of the Stadium Series game

It was yesterday that the outdoor game took place in Columbus, as the Red Wings visited the Blue Jackets.

Early in the season, this game wasn’t exciting anyone, as it was expected to be an unimportant game between two non-playoff teams, but the two teams made it very important since they currently occupy the two wild-card spots in the East.

So it was a four-point game outdoors for both teams, which we had a very close game.

Unfortunately, it all ended in controversy, as Justin Danforth scored the winning goal for the Blue Jackets after clearly hitting Simon Edvinsson in the face with his stick.

We can clearly see that Danforth gets away after hitting Edvinsson, but it wasn’t called by the referees.

It’s a shame, and it’s frustrating for the Red Wings and their fans, but in the end, this 5-3 win for the Blue Jackets is good for the Montreal Canadiens.

The Canadiens moved within three points of the Red Wings and a playoff spot with their win last night.

3. A hamburger thrown on the ice during Andrew Hammond’s night in Ottawa

Do you remember the “Hamburglar”?

It’s the nickname that was given to Andrew Hammond, the Ottawa Senators’ goalie who carried the team to the playoffs in 2015 with 20 wins in 24 games after his recall from the American Hockey League.

Well, yesterday night, he was honored in Ottawa, as he was invited to drop the puck for a face-off.

And on the occasion, a Senators fan threw a famous hamburger on the ice, and Hammond picked it up.

In short, a beautiful moment that reminds us of a whole story from ten years ago.

As for the game itself, the Senators ended their five-game losing streak with a 5-3 win.

And during the game, Tim Stützle again embarrassed hockey by renewing his title as the best diver in the NHL by diving without being hooked.

Really pathetic…

4. Connor McDavid reaches 700 assists

The captain of the Edmonton Oilers already has his name all over the NHL history books, and he added to it yesterday night by becoming the 3rd fastest player to reach the 700 assist milestone.

He achieved the feat in 699 games, with only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux being faster.

It’s crazy to think that even if we removed all of McDavid’s goals, he would still be a point-per-game player.

In short, it’s quite an achievement by McDavid in the Oilers’ 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

He’s really sensational, and he showed it again last night, including once against Jacob Slavin.

5. Matvei Michkov’s shootout goal

The Philadelphia Flyers won a big game last night, as they beat the powerful Winnipeg Jets 2-1 in a shootout.

These are two huge points for the Flyers, as they remain in the playoff hunt.

And let’s say they can thank Matvei Michkov, who scored the winning goal in a brilliant way in the shootout.
